Hull hope to have Snodgrass back for Saints

Show/hide article…

Hull could have winger Robert Snodgrass available for their Premier League match with Saints after he recovered from an ankle injury earlier than expected.

The Scotland international was initially ruled out for up to a month after suffering the injury in late October but returned to training on Friday and could be in contention, with Dieumerci Mbokani available after he recovered from a hamstring injury.

Allan McGregor (back) and Brian Lenihan (knee) have returned to training but this match will come too soon for the pair to return, while Andrew Robertson (calf), Moses Odubajo (fractured kneecap) and Alex Bruce (Achilles) remain sidelined. Adama Diomande misses out through suspension.

Hull City v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Hull striker Dieumerci Mbokani is back in training after a hamstring injury and should be at least fit enough for a place on the substitutes’ bench.

Robert Snodgrass is nearing a return from an ankle injury and is also in contention.

Southampton will recall players such as Jose Fonte, Charlie Austin and Steven Davis, who began on the bench against Inter Milan on Thursday.

Alistair Mann: "Having accumulated seven points from their opening four games, you could certainly forgive Hull City supporters for beginning to predict this as a positive season of consolidation. Six straight defeats later and pessimism now prevails.

"Their current alarming tumble down the table was typified by last week’s loss at Watford, where they contrived to lose to a side who officially never even had an effort on target!

"Despite succumbing disappointingly to Chelsea, Southampton, by contrast, are operating at the opposite end of the emotional spectrum after a famous win against Inter Milan in the Europa League, and will be expecting to add to their recent haul of 11 points from their last six top-flight matches.

“That they’ve secured victories in each of the last six meetings with this weekend’s beleaguered opponents only enhances their burgeoning confidence.”

Hull City head coach Mike Phelan: "We’ve been up and down in recent weeks, but we showed some consistency in our performance at Watford.

"We need to build on the positives from that display.

“When we’re competitive and determined as a team, the players know they can give any team a game at this level.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel: "It was a strong game against a good Inter Milan, but now this is finished.

"This is important for all the squad and young players to stay calm, recover well and now [have] good concentration about this game against Hull.

“To play at this level must give a good answer and it will be interesting to see the attitude of the squad against Hull on Sunday.”

The Tigers were unlucky to lose at Watford last time out, and after tipping them to lose every game so far, I think it is time for me to give them their first point of the season.

Puel: We must forget about Inter

Show/hide article…

Thursday night’s 2-1 win over the European giants surely ranks among the most famous in the club’s history, but the Saints boss insists there is no time to bask in the glow of it.

"One day after it’s always difficult, of course, with a short night, but it’s important now to forget this game against Inter Milan and now it’s another competition and an important game for us, against Hull City,” he said.

“Just two days after the Internazionale game, it’s important to make a good answer and keep a good concentration on this game, because in the Premier League we need points. It’s important to make a very good result away from home.”

Puel also wants to ensure the positivity after this week’s UEFA Europa League win does not take a hit heading into the international break.

"Of course, it will be important to have a good result just before the international break for the mind and the confidence, and also because we don’t have a lot of points in the Premier League,” he said.

“It’s important after we lost the last game, against Chelsea at home, to have a good reaction, a good attitude for this game, because it’s important to be in the top half of the Premier League.”

Premier League Predictions: Arsenal to beat Tottenham, Man United and Chelsea wins

Show/hide article…

Bournemouth are ticking along nicely this season, picking up result after result at home. The Cherries have won three of their five games at the Vitality Stadium and are starting to get the best out of on-loan Jack Wilshere. Sunderland are in meltdown and it is difficult to see them stopping the rot against Eddie Howe’s well-drilled outfit. Whisper it quietly but Burnley might just survive the drop this season. Sean Dyche is squeezing every last drop out of his players and they will be on a high after last weekend’s draw against Manchester United. Crystal Palace have lost their last three in a row but should have enough fight to leave Turf Moor with a point.

“The Gunners will prove too strong for Spurs with Alexis Sanchez continuing his fine form” Crisis? What crisis. Manchester City blew away their doubters by crushing West Brom before famously beating Barcelona. Middlesbrough have kept two clean sheets in a row and will prove a tough nut to crack. But with Sergio Aguero and co back on form, it is hard to look beyond City recording another three points. Stoke are unbeaten in five games having won their last three with Joe Allen pulling the strings in midfield. West Ham played well against Everton last weekend but the London Stadium is proving more of a hindrance than a help and I see the Potters winning this one. Wilfried Bony will have confidence after his brace against Swansea and will be the match winner tomorrow.

The Blues have won four consecutive Premier League games and I think they’ll make it five out of five tomorrow. Antonio Conte has made his side look unstoppable and Diego Costa and Eden Hazard will be too much for Ronald Koeman’s side to handle. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Romelu Lukaku nick a goal against his old side though. I think the form book goes out the window when it comes to a game like the north London derby and anything could happen. But I think the Gunners will prove too strong for Spurs with Alexis Sanchez continuing his fine form and being the talisman for Arsene Wenger’s side. Arsenal look to have the squad depth needed to mount a title challenge this season and a win here would ensure they keep up with the pace at the top of the Premier League.

After their bright start to the season, Mike Phelan and Hull are all over the place and relegation looks like a real possiblity. Claude Puel has made a bright start to his Southampton career and Saints will want to show they’re a good side after that Chelsea hammering last weekend. If it’s anything other than a comfortable victory for the away side, I’ll be very surprised. Jurgen Klopp has his side playing some scintillating football but Watford’s improvement under Walter Mazzarri has also been impressive. He has his side sitting above Man United without getting too many plaudits after replacing Quique Sanchez Flores in the summer. They have kept three clean sheets in a row in the Premier League, but the likes of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane are talented enough to breach the solid defence.

Saints have to put Inter win behind them

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged his Saints side to put Thursday night’s memorable win against Inter Milan immediately behind them and focus on what he feels is a key top flight game away to Hull.

With the city buzzing after the historic Europa League victory over Inter, there is inevitably a massive high for the players too.

However, Puel has been trying to keep things calm as he thinks Saints need three points at the KCOM Stadium on Sunday to keep their Premier League challenge ticking over ahead of the international break.

He insisted: “It’s a good thing for the confidence to win this game because I think it was a strong game against a good Inter Milan, but this is finished.

“It is important to keep a good balance of emotion between this European game and the next game against Hull City. This is not easy for the players because they don’t know this history to play different competitions and keep a good emotional level.

“We will see if we have the ability, the capacity, to give a good answer against Hull City with a good attitude, a good physical level and good football.

“It is very important this game to stay in the first part of the Premier League and just before the international break with many players getting selection. It is important to have a good spirit.”

Saints lost in their last Premier League game against Chelsea, meaning Puel is doubly determined to try and grab a positive result against top flight strugglers Hull, which is likely to provide a very different challenge to facing Inter Milan.

“After the game of course it’s normal that all the players, the staff, the fans were happy for the result and the quality of the game against a big team,” reflected Puel. “It was not the same as the first one.

“Now it is finished and we come back to the training session for good recovery, and a good emotional level leaving emotion because if we stay on this feeling you lose energy, you lose after all the possibilities to give a good answer, to make a good game against Hull City.

“This is important for all the squad and young players to stay with calm, good recovery and now with good concentration about this game against Hull City.

“Of course it’s difficult because it’s the first time for young players to play every three games, different competitions, and the games in the championship every time very difficult.

“To play at this level must give a good answer and it will be interesting to see the attitude of the squad against Hull City on Sunday.”

The Inside Track: Hull City

Show/hide article…

How has Hull’s season been so far?

It started with an unexpected bang, beating Leicester and Swansea, but ever since that uplifting first week it’s been the struggle that most supporters were braced for. The 1-1 draw with Burnley on 10th September remains the last point collected, and six consecutive Premier League defeats have dragged City into the bottom three. A run to the EFL Cup quarter-finals has brought some respite, but these are difficult days for Mike Phelan.

How important is this game for the team?

Just one point has come from the last 24 available, so it’s imperative that City get to the international break with something to cling to. The longer this losing run extends, the more confidence is damaged. Supporters also need to see a performance on home soil again. A 2-0 defeat at home to Stoke two weeks ago was dispiriting in the extreme. A win would be huge in the circumstances, but you suspect most would accept a point just to halt the slide.

What sort of a system and style of play do Hull employ?

Mike Phelan was faithful to a 4-3-3 formation until last weekend’s trip to Watford, where his hand was largely forced into a 3-5-2 shape. The return of captain Michael Dawson means the team’s strength is with its central defenders, and an additional man at the back certainly helped plug a few gaps. Only a Dawson own-goal denied them a first clean sheet since August, at Vicarage Road, and you would expect Phelan to place the emphasis on being hard to beat again. For all the club’s troubles at the moment, Phelan still encourages his team to get the ball down and play.

Who would you say will be Hull’s key players for this game?

I’ll go with two players, one from either end of the pitch. Michael Dawson missed the opening 12 weeks of the season with knee ligament damage, but has come back into the side to shore up a defence that leaked five at Liverpool and six at Bournemouth. His leadership skills and experience are invaluable. In attack, City need to get a tune from Abel Hernandez if they are to stand any chance of survival. The striker scored 23 goals last season to inspire promotion, but he has so far scored just one this term. If Hernandez gets back among the goals, City will stand a far better chance of turning around their ailing form.

What sort of a match are you expecting to see?

The need to take something from the game would point towards it being a tight, cautious fixture. City tried to be open against Bournemouth recently and paid a heavy price. Staying compact will give the Tigers the best chance and I’ll optimistically go with a 1-1 draw.

Claude Puel calls on Southampton to focus on Hull clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel wants his team to quickly put the victory over Inter Milan out of their minds and focus on winning at Hull.

Saints moved to the brink of the Europa League knockout stages with a memorable 2-1 triumph against the Italian giants, who had taken a first-half lead at St Mary’s.

The result is set to go down as one of the most glorious nights in the club’s history but Puel insists the players have to immediately now turn their attention to getting three points at the KCOM Stadium and recover from last weekend’s home Premier League defeat to Chelsea.

‘After the game of course, it is normal that all the players, the staff, the fans were happy for the result and the quality of the game against a big team,’ Puel said at a press conference.

'It is a good thing for the confidence to win this game because I think it was a strong game against a good Inter Milan, but now this is finished.

'We come back to the training session for good recovery, and a good emotional level, leaving emotion (behind) because if we stay on this feeling you lose energy, you lose after all the possibilities to give a good answer, to make a good game against Hull.

'This is important for all the squad and young players to stay calm, recover well and now (have) good concentration about this game against Hull.

'Of course it’s difficult because it’s the first time for young players to play every three games (in) different competitions, and the games in the championship (Premier League) are always very difficult.

'To play at this level must give a good answer and it will be interesting to see the attitude of the squad against Hull on Sunday.

‘It is very important (to win) this game to stay in the (top half) of the Premier League and just before the international break with many players getting selection (for their countries).’

Puel felt Inter Milan’s Antonio Candreva should have been sent off after Sam McQueen claimed the Italian elbowed him during the first half on Thursday night.

Unlike McQueen, the Saints boss was adamant he had not seen Inter’s apparent attempts to tamper with the penalty spot before Dusan Tadic’s saved effort, but nevertheless remained concerned about Candreva’s conduct.

Candreva was cautioned just ahead of half-time after he appeared to strike McQueen with his forearm shortly after Southampton were awarded a penalty for handball.

Because Polish referee Pawel Gil issued a yellow card to the Italian midfielder for how he viewed the incident at the time, there can now be no further retrospective disciplinary action from governing body UEFA.

Van Dijk and Clasie in Dutch squad

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk and Jordy Clasie have both been called into the Netherlands squad for their forthcoming games against Belgium and Luxembourg.

Saints’ Dutchmen will play a friendly against the Belgians on Wednesday 9th November in preparation for their 2018 Group A World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg a week on Sunday.

The Netherlands are keen to get back on track following a 1-0 defeat to France in Amsterdam last month.

A trip to Luxembourg is their final international match of the calendar year, and could see Danny Blind’s men close the gap at the top of their qualification group as they head towards the halfway stage.

Southampton face stern test at Hull after Europa win, says Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton came from behind to beat the Italian side 2-1 and rise to second in their group, and Puel said his team would have to show the right attitude to go into the international break still in the top half of the Premier League table.

Southampton, who have injuries to several players, are ninth in the 20-team table while Hull are 18th.

“It’s important to stay in the top half of the Premier League heading into the international break,” the Frenchman told reporters on Friday.

"We will see if we have the ability, the capacity, to give a good answer against Hull City with a good attitude.

“We have to have the answers against Hull City. They have difficulties, but it’s going to be a very tough game.”

Striker Shane Long, midfielder Jake Hesketh, and defenders Cedric Soares, Jeremy Pied and Matt Targett all missed the match against Inter due to injury, and Puel said none of them would be available for the weekend.

“I don’t think we will see the squad change for this week, because all the injured players are still unavailable,” he added.

“After the game last night, everyone was happy with the result. Now we have to stay calm and show good concentration.”
