Trending: Jose Mourinho’s problems increase at Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Here are the latest stories for Friday.

MAN UNITED: Jose Mourinho felt let down by Manchester United’s players, accusing them of ignoring his advice and treating the Europa League clash at Fenerbahce like a "summer friendly.’’

And Mourinho’s problems increased with Paul Pogba limping off the pitch in the first half of United’s 2-1 loss at Fenerbahce.

Mourinho has had a worse start to the season than either of the other managers who followed Sir Alex Ferguson at United – David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

  • Mourinho has to be given time to overhaul United’s underperforming squad and build a side capable of challenging for top honours, according to Paul Scholes.

  • Henrikh Mkhitaryan “has to do more” to win his place in the Manchester United lineup, Jose Mourinho says.

  • United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann hopes United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger decides to move to Major League Soccer, saying: “It would be a great thing.”

EUROPA LEAGUE: Aritz Aduriz scored all five goals as Athletic Bilbao secured a much-needed 5-3 win over Genk in Group F play.

SOUTHAMPTON: Southampton beat Inter Milan 2-1 to secure a famous victory that takes them to the brink of the Europa League’s knockout stages.

ARSENAL: Former Arsenal manager George Graham has told The Times he is hopeful Arsene Wenger may have finally addressed the club’s longstanding lack of “toughness” and “mentally strong” players.

MAN CITY: Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has apologised for “misunderstandings” after being frozen out of the squad following statements made by his agent Dimitri Seluk.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: City assistant manager Mikel Arteta has denied claims he insulted Barcelona’s Lionel Messi after the teams’ Champions League game on Tuesday, according to Onda Cero radio.

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool are set to appoint Michael Edwards as the club’s first sporting director, according to a source and multiple media reports.

MLS: New York City FC manager Patrick Vieira has defended his questionable in-game decisions in side’s 2-0 first-leg playoff defeat at Toronto FC on Sunday.

MEXICO: Europe-based players dominate Juan Carlos Osorio’s Mexico squad to face the United States in World Cup qualifying on Nov. 11, with Real Sociedad forward Carlos Vela returning for the first time in a year.

Saints academy hailed as ‘a model’ for China’s goal to become footballing superpower

Show/hide article…

SOUTHAMPTON FC is a prime target for Chinese investors who want to capitalise on its successful training academy, sports experts have said.

News of a potential takeover of the Saints by a Far East firm has come as no surprise to global footballing experts who say the success of its academy which has produced the likes of Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott, would be a major attraction for Chinese investors.

Professor Simon Chadwick, a lecturer in Sports Enterprise at Salford University in Manchester, said Saints’ world leading academy will be cast into the spotlight in China’s crusade to develop a new generation of footballing stars who could be sent here to nurture their talent.

He also revealed that the club was among three teams business leaders in the Far East considered ripe for buying as part of their Government’s multibillion pound masterplan to turn the Asian country into a ‘world footballing superpower’.

As reported in the Echo Katharina Liebherr and representatives of Lander Sports Development have held discussions in recent weeks as the China based giant aim to get a foothold in the Premier League.

However, talks between the two parties remain in the early stages, and there is as yet no solid indication over whether there will indeed be a £200m offer to buy the club, potential investment with Libeherr still the majority owner, or nothing at all.

The club has entered a six-week exclusivity agreement with the company and if it cannot come up with a suitable offer then other options will be considered.

Southampton FC said there would be no official comment from the club.

Professor Chadwick, a lecturer in Sports Enterprise at Salford University in Manchester, said on a recent visit to Qatar, a close source told him that Saints was one of three Premiership teams that footballing intermediaries were eager broker a deal with Chinese businessmen.

He said it follows Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiling a strategy to invest billions to enable the country to become football world beaters by 2050.

Several teams in the Midlands – plus a swathe of clubs across Europe – have already bought by the country’s investors a part of a scheme to learn successful coaching skills and develop homegrown talent – paving the way to attempting to win the World Cup.

Professor Chadwick said he thinks that Saints are in the spotlight due to the success of their academy and its record on producing players who have gone on to become England internationals.

He said: “Saints have a long and successful history in developing talent and the Chinese want to develop their own domestic talent.

“Players have gone on to represent their national teams, so this is not a coincidence.

“Southampton is like a model for the way the Chinese want to develop their football.

“You can expect more Chinese players coming over and it is likely that clubs will sign partnerships with Chinese teams to help develop talent.”

He added that there are many commercial and economic reasons for Chinese businesses to be attracted to the Premier League and added: “In China it is in the best interests of business people to be seen publicly to support state policy.

“The Premier League is also high profile and lucrative and if you invest in it you can make money.

“But also Hull and Southampton are port cities with shipping and cruise line industries, while I suspect investing in Midlands clubs is down to HS2.”

But he warned that Saints fans are unlikely to see huge amounts of money being invested into marquee signings such as other club owners like Roman Abramovich the Russian billionaire owner of Chelsea.

He added: “Don’t expect any big names or spending sprees as these are more long term investments.

“It is unlikely whether they will extend stadiums to fit in more seats but they may be interested in expansion if it involves creating a new hotel or conference centre.”

A spokesman for the Premier League said that prospective new owners must undergo rigorous legal, financial and background checks to ensure they are suitable to take over.

He said this included: l Evidence of sources and sufficiency of funding to complete the acquisition.

l A business plan showing the projected financial position of the Club should the change of control take place.

l Future Financial Information showing that all the Club’s liabilities can be met.

He said that anyone proposing to own 30 per cent more of the shares in a club, or proposing to be a director on the board must undergo an Owners’ and Directors’ Test.

The test prohibits anyone who from taking charge if they have an unspent conviction resulting in 12 months’ imprisonment, a dishonesty conviction (irrespective of sentence) or is subject to a ban from a sporting or professional body.

The Echo approached the FA but they said they were unable to comment as decisions on club ownership rest with the Premier League.

Sam McQueen says Antonio Candreva should have been sent off for elbowing him

Show/hide article…

Sam McQueen says Antonio Candreva should have been sent off for elbowing him

Southampton left-back Sam McQueen believes Italian international Antonio Candreva should have been sent off for elbowing him in the face during Thursday’s 2-1 victory against Inter Milan.

The controversial moment occurred during first-half stoppage time when a handball from Ivan Perisic gifted Southampton a penalty and the chance to equalise after Mauro Icardi had earlier opened the scoring for Inter.

Before the penalty was taken, Inter midfielder Candreva appeared to scuff up the penalty spot before elbowing McQueen in the face after the Saints’ youngster challenged his actions.

Polish referee Pawel Gil elected not to send Candreva off for violent conduct, instead issuing him with a yellow card, but McQueen was adamant after the game that the Italian should have seen red.

McQueen said: "I saw him [Candreva] do it. Some players try and do it these day, they try and dig up the penalty spot.

"I thought that was a silly thing to do so I went over to try and stop it and I felt he gave me an elbow in the jaw.

'I’m an honest player. I didn’t want to go down even though I did drop to my knees a bit. I’m sure people will laugh at that. I felt there was an elbow so I think we were unlucky they didn’t get a red card."

Dusan Tadic subsequently saw his penalty saved but the Saints battled back in the second half and sealed an historic win through goals from Virgil van Dijk and an own-goal from Inter defender Yuto Nagatomo.

The win puts Southampton on the brink of the Europa League’s knockout stages with a further victory from their trip to Sparta Prague or home fixture with Hapoel Be’er Sheva certain to guarantee at least a top-two finish.

Barca scouts attended Southampton vs Inter - only for their target not to play

Show/hide article…

A trip to Southampton is never a wasted trip.

Any port that boasts the SeaCity museum - complete with its interactive model of the Titanic - could never disappoint visitors.

But Barcelona scouts may have felt that their 1300-mile round trip was not as fruitful as hoped when the target they had flown in to see, Cedric Soares, didn’t even play against Inter Milan on Thursday night.

The Portugal full-back, who won Euro 2016 this summer, was left out of the Saints squad and watched on from the stands just like the Barca delegates who were searching for the Nou Camp club’s new right-back.

Luis Enrique has ordered sporting director Robert Fernandez to find him a new defender to replace outcast Aleix Vidal.

Vidal, 27, signed for Barca in the summer of 2015 but couldn’t make his debut until January owing to the transfer ban put in place by Fifa.

Once registered though, the former winger failed to have the same impact as he’d had in Unai Emery’s Sevilla sides and was quickly surpassed as Dani Alves’ back-up by midfielder Sergi Roberto - who was promoted to the starting role his season.

Vidal has started just one game this season, the shock 2-1 defeat at home to Alaves, and hasn’t played a minute since.

In the 12 Barcelona games since he last set foot on the field, Vidal hasn’t even made the matchday squad for 11.

Other names being considered by Barca, according to the front page of SPORT , are Valencia defender Joao Cancelo and Paris Saint-Germain’s Serge Aurier.

Future looks bright for Claude Puel and Southampton

Show/hide article…

When Claude Puel boldly claimed upon his appointment as Southampton manager he wanted to lead them into the Champions League, many outside St Mary’s scoffed at the suggestion.

But if the proposed £200 million takeover attempt by Chinese investment group Lander Sports Development is successful, perhaps the thought of Southampton rubbing shoulders with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the near future is not as preposterous as it first appeared.

After all, the south coast club, who only six years ago this week were playing Dagenham & Redbridge in the third tier of English football, have dramatically over-achieved in recent seasons, selling a host of star players every summer but still managing to set three successive club record Premier League points totals and toppling Italian giants Inter Milan in the Europa League on Thursday.

When influential trio Sadio Mane, Victor Wanyama and Graziano Pelle joined the annual exodus last summer before Puel had even got his feet under the manager’s desk, the Frenchman looked to be facing a difficult task to continue to keep them upwardly mobile.

However, shrewd acquisitions including Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Bayern Munich and the club’s desire to promote young players like emerging left-back Sam McQueen – a vision shared by the innovative Puel – has seen Saints make a better start to the season than many anticipated.

Last season, Southampton finished above Jurgen Klopp’s now title-chasing Liverpool. The previous year under Ronald Koeman’s expert guidance, they flirted with the top four for much of the campaign, despite spending dramatically less in the transfer market than they recouped.

Providing their prospective new Chinese owners do not stray from the business model which has seen Southampton improve their league finishing position in each of the last five years, bucking the trend for clubs of their stature, imagine what they could achieve backed with a large cash injection from the Far East.

The first task for current custodian Katharina Liebherr is to make sure the Lander Group, headed by 64-year-old Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng, have pockets deep enough to fulfil late father Markus’ dream of being Premier League force.

Southampton do not have to look too far for examples of supposed foreign oligarchs who promised the world and failed to deliver. South coast neighbours Portsmouth had more dubious owners than Premier League points before their amazing decline from FA Cup holders into England’s bottom division in little over five years.

For every Roman Abramovich at Chelsea and Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City there are failures, like Randy Lerner at Aston Villa or Carson Yeung at Birmingham. As Saints fans will testify having seen three-time European Cup winners Inter Milan step out at St Mary’s – a far cry from Dagenham – fortunes can change quickly in football.

When Puel’s side travel to Hull on Sunday looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 2-0 reverse at home to Chelsea, there will be a mixture of emotions among the travelling supporters. There’s bound to be excitement at the potential of following Manchester’s City’s rise from the old Division Two to the very top of the game, coupled with the anxiety of a step into the unknown.

Liebherr has proved her commitment to the Southampton cause by overseeing back-to-back European qualifications and entrusting head of football development Les Reed to take the lead on transfers and contract negotiations with players.

Reed has helped develop an infrastructure the envy of clubs around Europe, helping Saints move on seamlessly from the departures of Koeman and predecessor Mauricio Pochettino. Securing his future should be the first job undertaken by any incumbent in the corridors of power.

“Why fix what isn’t broken,” is a mantra often ignored by intelligent and successful individuals when they take over football clubs. But if Jisheng is willing to build on the foundations set down by the Liebherr family, the future for Southampton should be very bright.

Saints comeback stuns Inter

Show/hide article…

This was the sort of night Southampton fans could once only have dreamed of – an evening so special that it will be cherished by all those fortunate enough to be there, and also by those who watched from afar.

As the final whistle approached, a deafening chorus of ‘Oh when the Saints go marching in’ rang round St Mary’s, as the home supporters began to come to terms with the fact that they were watching their side vanquish Internazionale, a true giant of the European game, 2-1.

That it took an electrifying second-half comeback to achieve the treasured result only made it all the more special.

For more than an hour, it had looked as if this night, which began with such a sense of anticipation, would end simply in bitter frustration.

But Mauro Icardi’s first-half goal was rendered completely null and void in a wonderful five-minute spell, as Virgil van Dijk and a Yuto Nagatomo own-goal gave Saints a famous result that puts them in a fantastic position to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.

St Mary’s, no doubt like the eyes of many of Southampton’s supporters, was sparkling ahead of kick-off.

Inter might not be the continental powerhouse they once were, but the sight of such a storied European club arriving at the stadium for a competitive fixture was still a magical one.

There may have been more important games played at St Mary’s in its 15-year history, but it is doubtful there have been any as prestigious. And it is doubtful any result here has ever been so famous.

Claude Puel made five changes from Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea, bringing in Maya Yoshida, Sam McQueen, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez.

Out went José Fonte, Ryan Bertrand, Jordy Clasie, Steven Davis and Charlie Austin, who all dropped to the bench.

The line-up saw only one alteration from the side that lost 1-0 in San Siro two weeks previously, with Nathan Redmond in for the injured Shane Long.

There was a tremendous atmosphere inside St Mary’s as the match got under way, and the energy in the crowd was shared on the pitch, as the hosts started positively.

Indeed, they carved out a chance inside the opening minute, as Dušan Tadić teased a cross in from the right, with Rodriguez outjumping Andrea Ranocchia at the back post, only to head wide.

While the initial signs were bright, there was also an early warning of the threat Inter posed on the counter, as they robbed Saints of the ball deep in their own half, before Icardi slipped in Éver Banega. He quickly danced past the back-tracking Oriol Romeu, before going down under Yoshida’s challenge, but referee Pawel Gil waved away the visitors’ penalty claims, to the relief of the home crowd.

After van Dijk claimed he was hauled down while attempting to get on the end of a Ward-Prowse corner, Saints then took firm aim at the visitors’ goal.

Rodriguez curled a shot over from the edge of the area in the tenth minute, before having a low strike from a similar position saved by Inter keeper Samir Handanovič shortly afterwards.

In the 14th minute, Redmond cut into space in the area, only to fire his right-footed shot wide of the far post.

Southampton were well in control of the game, but Inter continued to look dangerous on the occasions they were able to break, and they struck gold in the 33rd minute, as a neat move freed Antonio Candreva down the right.

His ball from the byline caused a scramble at the back post, with Cuco Martina blocking Ivan Perišić’s shot on the line, but Icardi reacted quickest to the rebound and turned to fire in at the near post.

Saints pressed again, though, and were given a golden chance to level in added time, as Højbjerg barreled into the area with the ball, which flicked off the elbow of Perišić, leading Gil to award a spot kick.

A lengthy delay followed, as Candreva raised an arm into the face of Sam McQueen, sparking a heated exchange between several players, and the Inter star was very fortunate to escape only with a yellow card for the offence.

Eventually, Tadić was given the all-clear to take the spot kick, but his effort, which was hit slightly right of centre, was kept out by Handanovič, in what proved to be the last action of the half.

The miss at least did not appear to affect Saints after the interval, as Ward-Prowse twice went close in the opening minutes with fierce efforts from just outside the area, the second of which was arrowing for the top corner, only to be kept out by a stunning Handanovič save.

Seeking the breakthrough, Puel made his first change of the night shortly before the hour mark, as top scorer Austin replaced Rodriguez.

Within five minutes, Saints were indeed level, but, rather than Austin, it was van Dijk who sent St Mary’s wild.

The Dutchman had already twice threatened from Tadić corners in the second half, first being manhandled to the ground again, before Handanovič superbly tipped over his close-range header.

But the Inter keeper, who was the scourge of Saints at San Siro a fortnight earlier, could do nothing to deny him in the 64th minute from another Tadić delivery.

Redmond kept the ball alive in the area, after it was initially cleared. Romeu then looped a shot goalwards, which drifted over Handanovič and hit the bar, before falling kindly for van Dijk to smash home.

Five minutes later, it got even better for Saints, as Tadić sent in a dangerous low ball from the left that took a deflection off one Inter defender, before hitting the unfortunate Nagatomo at the back post, with the ball looping off the defender and drifting past a helpless Handanovič to put the hosts 2-1 up and complete a remarkable turnaround.

Puel would soon replace Tadić with Steven Davis, while Fraser Forster had to make a good low stop to deny Icardi’s well-struck effort from distance.

Redmond nearly put the match beyond doubt with ten minutes left, but he fired a yard or two wide after cutting onto his right foot 18 yards out.

It didn’t matter, though, as Saints comfortably held on to secure the most wonderful of results.

Inter train at home of eighth-tier club Winchester City

Show/hide article…

They may be used to playing at one of world football’s most iconic stadia, but Inter Milan trained in rather different surroundings on Friday morning.

Following their defeat by Southampton on Thursday night, the Italian club stayed on the south coast rather than returning home immediately.

And that meant a training session at the Denplan City Ground, home of Winchester City, the morning after their defeat.

The managerless club, who were beaten 2-1 at St Mary’s having led at half time, were put through their paces at the empty 4,500-seater stadium.

And while they may be having a disappointing start to the season, sitting 12th in Serie A, it is still a far cry from Winchester City, who are currently 18th in the Southern League Division One South and West - the eighth tier of English football.

Inter have won 18 Italian titles and 3 European Cups, but the most their hosts can boast is an FA Vase triumph in 2004 and three Wessex League crowns. In fact, they have never even reached the FA Cup first round.

Then there are the grounds they play at - the San Siro boasts a capacity of 80,000, and is one of the most famous grounds in the world, while few people outside Winchester will be aware of the Denplan City Ground.

That didn’t stop the Italian side going through a strenuous warm-up before those who were left out of Thursday night’s game took part in some high-intensity possession work, as well as speed and strength training.

The Serie A giants have lost six of their last eight games in all competitions, with Frank de Boer sacked last week as a result.

They sit bottom of their Europa League group with just three points from four games after Thursday’s defeat, in which they took the lead Icardi but saw an own goal from Yuto Nagatomo complete a turnaround after Virgil Van Dijk had equalised.
