Southampton’s October Goal of the Month competition is simply Boufital

Show/hide article…

Southampton have created the greatest October Goal of the Month competition.

The Saints, who played six games in the month which included fixtures against Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester City, managed to find the net five times.

Three of the five goals came in the emphatic 3-1 victory over Burnley, one was scored by Nathan Redmond in the memorable 1-1 draw with City and the other, well the other deserves a category of it’s own.

Sofiane Boufal, who arrived from Lille as part of a record £21million summer transfer, finally showed the fans what he’s made of with a stunning winning goal against Sunderland in the EFL Cup.

And, in Boufal’s honour, the club produced this gem:

‘It was a beautiful goal and I’m so happy to score my first goal at St Mary’s,’ Boufal told the club website after his goal.

‘I want to say thank you for the support of all the fans who came. I’m so happy to play 90 minutes as it’s good for the confidence and for my body. It was a great night for me.

‘The spirit is very strong. My team-mates are so happy for me because they see me come into the club when I couldn’t play.

‘Now they see me score this goal and they’re happy for me so I’d like to say thank you to them and to all the medical staff. The goal isn’t just for me it’s for everyone,’ the Moroccan international added.

Saints support Ultimate Charity Auction

Show/hide article…

The unrivalled package gives two people the chance to be guests at any remaining home match this season, with full hospitality.

Depending on the fixture, you’ll be hosted in ether the Under Armour or Club Box – both are unique, pitch-facing and accommodate no more than 20 guests on a matchday.

The global online charity auction takes place until Sunday 6th November, raising money for Sarcoma UK, In The Game – the League Managers Association Charity, My WiSH Charity, supporting West Suffolk Hospital, and the GeeWizz charitable foundation.

The auction has raised more than £870,000 since its inception five years ago, with organisers going all out to try and top the £1 million mark this year.

Organiser Gina Long said: “We are indebted to everyone who has donated to and supported this year’s Ultimate Charity Auction, which will be making a huge difference to some amazing and worthwhile national and local charities.”

More information on the auction can be found at www.ultimatecharityauction.com or by following the auction on Twitter @UCOnlineAuction.

Fans can be crucial, says Højbjerg

Show/hide article…

The UEFA Europa League trip to Inter a fortnight ago saw 6,715 Saints supporters file into the iconic stadium, making sure their voices were heard throughout the night.

Ahead of Thursday’s clash between the teams on the south coast, Højbjerg said: "We saw in San Siro – we had the feeling that we played at home, how they came, how they supported us and how they always stood behind us.

“I must say, I have been at some clubs and I think I have never experienced something like that, and to be that loud doesn’t happen a lot, and that shows love and passion for the club, and that shows real history.

“The players can feel it, and the players will try to put all their energy into the game and try to get the best possible result, because it’s in all of our favours that we get the best possible result, and we will maybe make history and go through to the knockout stages.”

With Saints on four points at the midway stage of the Group K campaign, and Inter just one behind them, Højbjerg knows how pivotal this match could be.

"Of course, it’s a crucial game,” he said. “If we win this game I think it looks very good ahead of the knockout stages.

“If we lose the game, we suddenly can be one step behind, and with only two games left then there is a lot to catch and that can be difficult.

“So it’s really important to get a good start to the game, to get a good feeling and atmosphere. The fans have to be there, and I really look forward to it.”

Man City champions, Man Utd seventh, Matt Le Tissier predicts Premier League top seven

Show/hide article…

Soccer Saturday pundit Matt Le Tissier has predicted how the top of the table will look come the end of the season, tipping Manchester United to finish outside the top six.

With 10 games gone, the Southampton legend is sticking by his pre-season prediction for Manchester City to secure the title.

He is expecting a wide-open race with Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal in the mix - but he doesn’t see their neighbours United being involved.

Jose Mourinho’s men are eighth following Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Burnley, eight points behind the leaders with just one win in seven games.

Here’s how Le Tissier expects the top seven to look come the end of the season…

He told Sky Sports: "When you think about the money Manchester United have spent it’s just not good enough from Jose Mourinho.

"They’re eight points off the top already and you’re now looking at what they’re going to spend again in January, so there’s still a lot of progress to be made.

"I thought City might have run away with it after the first few games but 10 games in and one point separating the top four tells me we’re in for an exciting one.

"Liverpool and Chelsea’s lack of European football gives them a real edge, especially with Arsenal and Tottenham in the Champions League. When it’s so tight in there you look at small differences and I think that could be it.

“So far, Southampton have exceeded my expectations because I thought the Europa League would have had a bigger effect, but our worst period was before the European campaign started.”

Look out for Matt Le Tissier’s review of the Premier League season so far on Sky Sports’ digital platforms on Saturday.

Stat Pack: Saints vs Inter

Show/hide article…

Southampton have lost just one of their last 15 home games in all European competitions (W8 D6), losing 2-4 vs Sporting Lisbon in a UEFA Cup second round fixture in October 1981.

Internazionale have lost four of their last five European away games in England. Their win came against Chelsea on the way to winning the Champions League.

Internazionale are without a win in their last five European away games (D3 L2).

Saints have never lost consecutive games in European competition before.

Maya Yoshida has completed 175 passes so far in the Europa League, the 10th most of any player in the competition, with an impressive 92% completion rate.

Southampton have faced six shots on target in the Europa League this season. Only St Etienne (5) and Shakhtar Donetsk (1) have faced fewer than that.

Internazionale have had just seven shots on target in the competition this season, which is the lowest in Group K.

Antonio Candreva’s winning strike in the first ever meeting between the two sides in October came from Internazionale’s only shot on target.

David Moyes faces more woe as Sunderland manager is suspended

Show/hide article…

Sunderland manager David Moyes will serve a one-match touchline ban after admitting using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official.

The ex-Everton and Manchester United boss committed the offence during his team’s EFL Cup game at Southampton on October 26, the Football Association has announced.

The incident happened in or around the 90th minute of the fixture, which Claude Puel’s Saints side won 1-0 thanks to a terrific 66th-minute Sofiane Boufal strike.

Moyes later admitted that he deserved to be sent to the stands.

The 53-year-old was furious after believing that Maya Yoshida had brought down Sunderland forward Victor Anichebe in the area, when a late penalty would have given his beleaguered side hope of booking a quarter-final place.

‘I was sent off for leaving my box and swearing at the fourth official,’ Moyes said.

‘The problem was he chased me down the touchline. I swore at him and I shouldn’t have done so I deserved to be sent off.’

Moyes was in no doubt about the late penalty claim which angered him so much, but was waved away by referee Chris Kavanagh.

‘When you see it again it’s a stonewaller, no question,’ he added. ‘Inside the box Yoshida fouls Victor, he comes across him, and it should have been a definite penalty awarded.’

As well as the suspension, Moyes will have to pay a fine as the standard penalty for this breach of FA Rule E3 also includes an £8,000 punishment.

The sanctions will be imposed immediately by the governing body.

Sunderland are rock-bottom of the Premier League with two points from their opening 10 games, with Moyes yet to pick up a league win after taking over in the summer from Sam Allardyce.

The Black Cats were resoundingly beaten 4-1 at home to Arsenal on Saturday in the lunchtime kick-off and they have now lost their last four games in all competitions.

Moyes’ men are next up against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth, as they head to the south coast for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday.

The Inside Track: Internazionale

Show/hide article…

How have Inter been doing since the game against Southampton two weeks ago?

Inter Milan live in a very difficult moment. On Tuesday, the club’s executives rescinded the contract of Dutch manager Frank de Boer, appointing youth coach Stefano Vecchi as caretaker. The former Ajax player paid for a poor start to the season, in which they lost seven of 14 games. After the match against Southampton, they lost 1-0 to Atalanta, in Bergamo, playing maybe their worst game of the season. The following match, they won against Torino FC at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, thanks to a stunning goal by team captain Mauro Icardi. But that didn’t give a new impulse to Nerazzurri and they were defeated again by Sampdoria, on Sunday, in Genoa. Now Nerazzurri occupy 11th place in the Serie A standings.

How much do you think Inter learned from the first game?

Inter have to pay more attention to defence. In the home match against Southampton, Nerazzurri were often in trouble when the Saints attacked their defensive line. Paradoxically, that was the only game, alongside the Serie A victory against Empoli, where Inter haven’t conceded a goal. However, two weeks ago, Southampton had too many chances to score, and if Nerazzurri want to earn three points at St Mary’s they shouldn’t repeat that defensive performance. Caretaker coach Vecchi has little time to work with the team, but he is a capable and pragmatic coach.

How impressed were you by Southampton in the first match?

It was known that Saints were a really good team. At Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the side led by Claude Puel confirmed our previous impressions. In the first match, Southampton deserved not to lose. In the Saints squad, there are promising players, but also fully-formed and good footballers. Among them Dutch central defender Virgil van Dijk, who was good in leading the defence with authority, and thanks to his technical skills is the man who starts the build-up. He has a superior ability to find the right man with long-range passes and good timing in short play. In the near future, van Dijk could become a top European player.

How strong do you think Inter’s team will be on Thursday?

The game will be decisive for Inter. They have to win if they want to continue their Europa League campaign, and Nerazzurri will try to achieve this goal with debutant Stefano Vecchi on the bench. The 45-year-old manager signed for Inter in July 2014. After several spells in the second and third Italian division, Vecchi accepted the offer to coach the Inter Milan “Primavera” squad (the Under-19 team), winning the prestigious “Viareggio Cup World Football Tournament Coppa Carnevale” and the youth national cup – the Coppa Italia Primavera. Vecchi is an experienced and ambitious coach, whose teams are always very balanced.

Who will be Inter’s key players for the match?

Inter’s performances depend much on Mauro Icardi’s scoring ability. The Argentinian striker has scored eight goals in his last 11 appearances. He is the decisive man in the attacking phase and one of his pieces of skill can change the match, as happened against Torino. As team captain, “Maurito” also has more duties – he has to help the team in this difficult moment.

What do you think will happen in the match?

Last Saturday, during the press conference before the match against Inter Milan, Sampdoria coach Marco Giampaolo said that he didn’t know what to expect from the game. Nerazzurri have the talent to play a great match, but it could happen that they have a poor attitude. Basically, the Italian manager, who as a child was an Inter fan, emphasised that Inter Milan is considered a “crazy” team in Italy. The title of the club anthem is just “Pazza Inter, Amala!” which means “Crazy Inter, Love 'Em!”
