From Huddersfield to the San Siro - an incredible journey for the Saints fans

Show/hide article…

So the day has come.

After the weeks of planning, the weeks of excitement, it has finally arrived, writes LIAM WHITLOCK.

I am going to watch Saints in the San Siro stadium.

It’s only six years and four days ago when Saints lost 2-0 at Huddersfield Town in a League 1 fixture.

We had only won five in 15 league and cup games in 2010/11.

In comparison, Inter Milan had won the Champions League five months earlier.

There is simply no way any Saints fan would ever imagine, in such a short space of time, that we would be facing one of the giants of European football in one of the world’s most iconic stadiums.

Without doubt, Inter have suffered a huge fall in grace since then.

For a start, the fact that they are playing in UEFA’s second tier competition speaks volumes.

I booked my hotel and flights four days after I found out we were facing Inter in our group.

After going to 20 away games last season - including Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa League - a trip to the San Siro is something I simply couldn’t miss.

As for the game itself, with Inter’s recent form and captain Mauro Icardi’s arguments with the Ultras supporters group, I don’t see why we can’t get a result.

If we win tonight, it would take a meltdown to not progress to the knockout stages.

Regarding Claude Puel, our board have - yet again - shown that managers are replaceable if the right research is done.

I was sceptical, like many, when the diamond formation was first operated, but we actually look a stronger outfit than what we did under Koeman so far.

Defensively, we rarely concede and we make chances going forward.

Up front, Charlie Austin is looking a snip at £4 million.

The two games we have lost - at Manchester United and Arsenal - were games that could have easily gone either way.

I also like the rotation policy Puel uses; it will be interesting to see whether we are as strong come the new year. Time will tell.

Tonight’s game has to be taken with the utmost importance.

I wouldn’t rest the amount of players that the manager did in Hapoel.

Yes, we have Manchester City away on Sunday, but if we can progress through this group as quickly as possible then we can field our strongest teams for the Premier League and rest our stars for the Europa League’s final three games.

My prediction is 2-1 to Saints - and I wouldn’t have said that six years and four days ago!

Southampton transfer targets from Football Whispers: Leo da Silva Lopes, Juanpi and Kevin Wimmer

Show/hide article…

Things appear to be clicking into place for Southampton under Claude Puel. The French manager arrived from Nice over the summer to little fanfare and with the enormous task of replacing Ronald Koeman in the dugout.

But after a tricky start, he has now led his team to three wins and one draw in their last four Premier League fixtures. Consequently, it is possible to envisage another season of over-achievement for the south coast outfit.

Year upon year Southampton’s best players move on; this summer it was Sadio Mane, last year it was Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin and in 2014 Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana departed.

Despite this procession of departures, the club continually rebuilds, often coming back stronger than before. The January window could see them make further additions.

In a bid to both reinforce Puel’s squad and maintain the principles that have served them so well in recent years, Southampton will likely continue to focus on young players with their careers ahead of them and potential sell-on value.

Here, thanks to help from Football Whispers, we take a look at three players who fit such a policy…

Southampton are among a multitude of Premier League clubs rumoured to be interested in signing Peterborough’s Leo da Silva Lopes. According to The Sun, Southampton were joined by Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham scouts while running the rule over the 17-year-old during Peterborough’s 3-1 win over Bury earlier this month.

It was also reported that Spurs are currently leading the chase, but if Lopes is intent on joining a club with an ability to nurture and develop young players, Saints would also be a good choice.

Born in Portugal, the teenager was spotted by Peterborough while playing for Powerleague FC at the age of 14. One year on, he scored a wonder goal in an FA Youth Cup tie against Notts County and, at just 16 years of age, he made his debut for the first team against Crawley Town. His fast progression could lead him to English football’s top tier soon.

Since Puel took charge Southampton have primarily lined up in a rough 4-3-1-2 formation, with Dusan Tadic playing behind Nathan Redmond and Shane Long. And their attacking ranks could be bolstered in January, with Futbolistos reporting that they are interested in adding Malaga’s Venezuelan international Juanpi to the squad.

After breaking into the La Liga side’s first team last term, where he made 29 league appearances and scored four goals, the 22-year-old has continued to assert himself as one of his team’s most exciting and productive forwards this season. With a success rate of 51.7 per cent he is Malaga’s most effective dribbler, while he has also created 15 chances in his 585 minutes of game time.

The one stumbling block may be that Malaga are currently trying to extend his current deal to keep him tied to the club until 2020, and that he is reported to be valued at around £18m, which would break Saints’ record fee of £15.9m for Sofiane Boufal.

So far this Premier League season only two teams - Tottenham and Everton - have conceded fewer goals than Southampton’s seven in eight games. Saints’ defensive record is in large part down to the fine central defensive partnership formed by Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk.

However, with club captain Fonte set to turn 33 in December, Puel may look to bring in a longer-term option soon.

The 23-year-old Austrian Wimmer was impressive when standing in for the injured Jan Vertonghen last term, but has failed to make a single league appearance for Tottenham this campaign. As such, the composed left-footed defender could potentially be open to a move.

“It is difficult at the moment but I am patiently waiting for my chance. I try to always stay positive,” Wimmer told Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung recently. “The feedback from the club is always that they are very happy; that they see the future with me. This is very positive, but it is about the here and now.”

Strong, young and comfortable on the ball, Wimmer would suit Southampton’s possession game on the pitch. If more opportunities don’t come his way soon at Tottenham, the Saints would be wise to turn their attentions to him.

Tadić expects open game

Show/hide article…

The two teams go head-to-head in the San Siro, in what will be the third match of the UEFA Europa League group stage campaign.

It’s a highly-anticipated contest, and one that Tadić believes has every chance of living up to its billing.

"I expect an open game, because both teams like to play good football and to win matches and to dominate possession and the game,” he said at the pre-match press conference.

“I think it will be an interesting game also to see for the fans, but I hope we will be the stronger team and will take the three points.”

Tadić added: "For us, it’s just another match, because we are professional, we are focused on every match – it doesn’t matter who is our opponent. Also the coach tries to teach us that. We just need to be focused and try to take three points.”

The Saints playmaker has been in excellent form this season, and says he is feeling in superb condition ahead of tonight’s match.

"I feel really good physically and I think also in the national team and here the coaches give me a good opportunity and a good role to show my qualities,” he said.

“I think always it’s possible to be even better, but just together we can become better and better. It’s important we work hard every day to be better players.”

Sunderland weigh up bids for Robbie Brady and Shane Long

Show/hide article…

Sunderland are weighing up a bid for Republic of Ireland international Robbie Brady in the January transfer window as manager David Moyes looks to add players with a proven track record in English football.

Brady dropped out of the Premier League when he was relegated with Norwich City back in May, but excelled for Ireland at the European Championships in France, scoring the dramatic winning goal against Italy that took Martin O’Neill’s side into the knockout stage of the competition.

Brady would be a tremendous addition to the Sunderland squad as he can play in any position on the left flank, as well as in the number 10 role that he has recently been promoted to with his national side.
