Inter Milan v Saints - why it’s crunch time in the San Siro
Show/hide article…
When Saints were drawn with Inter Milan, it felt as though the matches between the sides would provide the real glamour of European qualification.
Now it seems they also will be defining fixtures for both clubs.
You would have got fairly short odds that in a group containing one of the traditional giants of world football, and a team that have been riding high for a number of years in the Premier League, that those two would get through to the knockout rounds.
Up against them were minnows from Israel in the shape of Hapoel Be’er Sheva, and a Sparta Prague team who openly admitted from the start that their focus was going to be on winning their domestic title and not the Europa League.
As it has turned out, with just two games gone, Saints have the chance to put one foot in the knockout stages and all but eliminate Inter in the process in the San Siro tonight.
There is little margin for error for Inter after defeats to both Hapoel and Sparta.
This middle combination of matches, where Saints and Inter play each home and away, while Hapoel and Sparta do the same, will be crucial.
Inter have to take four points from the two Saints games if they are to think they will realistically get through.
It makes for an interesting team selection for Inter boss Frank de Boer.
It might be that he, along with plenty of others, under-estimated the other teams in the group.
Cruise Inter have left £100m worth of talent out of their squad to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, but also fielded almost a reserve team from what remained in the opening two games.
Before a San Siro curtain raiser with Hapoel, De Boer might have thought that would still be enough.
Likewise, if he had watched Sparta’s game against Saints, as he surely did, he probably reckoned the same again.
On both occasions they were caught out.
If Inter’s plan was to cruise through the group, being prepared to just do enough to finish second to get through if needed while playing virtually a reserve team as they try and have a better crack at Serie A and Champions League qualification, it really hasn’t worked out.
De Boer finds himself at a crossroads now.
He either has to just stick with this policy and accept that there is every chance that by the time they have played Saints twice over the next couple of weeks they might be as good as out.
Or he has to do a pretty quick about turn and field the strongest side available to him against Saints and have a proper go at it.
That Mauro Icardi, Inter’s most potent attacking threat, has yet to start in the Europa League this season tells you everything you need to know about their approach to the tournament.
Should he and some of his fellow star names line up against Saints it could suddenly be a very different prospect.
That would be unfortunate for Claude Puel, with Saints almost paying the price for the unlikely success of Hapoel and Sparta and the unlikely failure of Inter, whose players were slammed by De Boer for having a poor attitude after the defeat to the Czech side.
Inter really are at the point of no return now in Group K. It’s either get some wins immediately to get back into this, or they are going out and may as well throw in the towel.
It seemed such an unlikely scenario at this stage following the group draw, but then football has a way of throwing up unexpected scenarios.
On the flip side, from a Saints point of view, four points from the Inter double header will leave them almost in the knockout rounds.
They will have virtually made it two from three in the group by condemning Inter to elimination if they produce a draw at the San Siro and a win at St Mary’s.
They will also be confident of tackling Sparta - even on the road given the hiding they gave them at St Mary’s – and Hapoel at home.
The Israelis were athletic and well organised, but out of that intimidating atmosphere and in the cold of December in England there is no reason to think Saints cannot beat them if they need to.
Before Sparta’s win over Inter, and based on the evidence of the performances we have seen against Saints thus far, you would have backed Hapoel to comfortably get at least four points from Sparta.
However, whether Sparta will now have a bit of renewed interest in the competition following an unlikely victory over Inter remains to be seen.
From their point of view, they will want to be in with a real chance of getting through the group after the two games with Hapoel, or there isn’t any point in them pushing too hard.
How those fixtures pan out will also have an impact, on attitude as much as anything else, going into the last two rounds of matches.
There is no doubt this is crunch time now.
For Inter, it’s no longer just entertaining what they will view as a smaller club from England. Their future in Europe this season is on the line.
For Saints a trip to the San Siro is no longer about just a bit of fun and glamour, it’s very serious business. The knockout stages could soon be within touching distance.

Tadić: It will be a special night
Show/hide article…
Saints visit the Italian giants tomorrow for the third match in their UEFA Europa League group stage campaign, and Tadić is excited about the prospect.
"Always it’s nice to play in big stadiums like San Siro. It’s special,” he said at a pre-match press conference. “I think everyone gets more motivation to play. I think it will be really nice to play here and to show our football.
"We are really excited to play here against a big team like Inter. We know it will be a really tough match, because they have a really good team and good coach, but I think we have prepared well for this game and we will see. We would like to take three points.”
Saints currently head Group K with Hapoel Be’er Sheva, on four points, while Inter are bottom of the pile, with nothing from their opening two games.
Tadić knows, therefore, how valuable another three points would be, but also how desperate Inter are likely to be for the victory.
"I think it’s a big opportunity for us, but this is a really big club, and if you don’t win one or two games immediately it starts to be a much bigger pressure,” he said.
“For them, they want to win every match, and also us. I think it will be an interesting game.”

Inter leave out £100m worth of talent - so who will face Saints tonight?
Show/hide article…
INTER Milan boss Frank de Boer has left around £100m worth of talent out of his 25-man Europa League squad.
Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa and midfield star Joao Mario, who joined Inter in the summer for around 70 million Euros, cannot therefore feature in the group stage.
Inter’s two big summer signings from the previous season, €31m French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic, have also been left out for fear of breaching UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules.
But de Boer can still call upon a host of internationals for tonight’s game against Saints.
Here, Macauley Daley profiles the players who Inter have used in their two Europa League games so far.
Samir Handanovic The goalkeeper, 32, is the only player in the entirety of Inter’s squad to start every match in both Serie A and the Europa League this season.
The former Slovenian international was signed from Udinese in 2012 for £12.75m and has made over 160 appearances since in all competitions.
Won the Serie A goalkeeper of the year award in 2011 and 2013. In both of those seasons, he was named in the league’s team of the year.
Danilo D’Ambrosio The right back, 28, has been a regular for Inter in his third full campaign at the San Siro. He was signed in January 2014 from Torino for £1.49m by current Watford boss Walter Mazzarri. Can also play on the left.
Yuto Nagatomo The Japanese left-back has only been used as a bit part player so far by de Boer, despite signing a contract extension in April. After signing in January 2011, the 30-year-old has made 167 appearances in all competitions for Inter, scoring ten times from his favoured position of left-back.
Senna Miangue This is the Belgian left back’s first season in and around the Inter first team and he has already started twice.
Just two days after making his debut against Palermo in Serie A, the 19-year-old was rewarded with a new four year contract.
Jeison Murillo (centre back) In his only previous season at the San Siro, the 24-year-old centre half received eight yellow and four red cards and also got sent off in consecutive league matches. Signed from Granada for £6.8m in July 2015, he has started both Europa League matches this season.
Felipe Melo The 33-year-old defensive midfielder is in his second season at the San Siro, following spells at Galatasaray, Juventus and Fiorentina. Signed by Roberto Mancini for £3.15m in 2015, he’s so far made 30 appearances, scoring just the one goal. Has started both of Inter’s Europa League games but has only been used sporadically in the league so far. Was part of Brazil’s 2010 World Cup squad.
Gary Medel Following Cardiff ’s relegation from the Premier League and some impressive performances at the 2014 World Cup, Inter parted with £10m for the Chilean international, 29, and it’s proved to be shrewd business. He’s made 89 appearances, scoring one once. The defensive midfielder is a double Copa America winner with Chile.
Marcelo Brozovic The 23-year-old box-to-box midfielder is currently a squad player, having only made two appearances so far this campaign. In Inter’s first Europa League match against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, he was taken off at half time.
He made 32 league appearances last season for Roberto Mancini, and also played three times for Croatia at Euro 2016.
Assane Demoya Gnoukouri The 20-year-old central midfielder has mainly been used as a sub this season. He made his first start of this campaign against Sparta Prague, playing 70 minutes.
Ever Banega Banega, 28, was seen as a terrific bit of business on Inter’s part as they managed to sign the attacking midfielder on a free transfer from Sevilla in the summer. He won two Europa League trophies during his time in Spain and will be hoping to make it a triple crown this term. Rodrigo Palacio The Argentinean has started both Europa League games in Group K and is their sole scorer thus far.
Despite this, the goals have dried up in recent seasons for the 34-year-old - he has just four since the beginning of last season.
This is his fourth year at the San Siro after joining from Genoa and so far he’s made 145 appearances, scoring 51 times. Was part of the Argentina squad that finished runner-up at the 2007 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup.
Eder This is the Italian’s first full season at the San Siro, after joining on a two-year loan deal midway through last season from Sampdoria. The 29-year-old has not scored for Inter since last April, though. He started all four of Italy’s matches at Euro 2016, scoring the winner against Sweden in their second group match.
Jonathan Biabiany This is the French winger’s second spell at Inter, after he graduated through the academy in 2007. The 28-year-old had spells with Sampdoria and most notably Parma before returning to the San Siro in 2015. Made his only appearance this season in the Europa League loss to Be’er Sheva.
Mauro Icardi Inter’s captain, 23, and the club’s top scorer has yet to start in the Europa League this season but has been come on in both games. Has already been involved in eight goals (six goals and two assists) in just eight Serie A matches this season, after scoring 16 times in the last campaign and 22 the year before that.
Antonio Candreva The Italian international winger is another one of the newer faces at the San Siro, having arrived from Lazio for £18.7m in the summer. He got 10 goals at the Stadio Olympico last season and has so far made an appearance in every one of Frank De Boer’s matches this campaign, although he is yet to get off the mark. Started twice for Italy at Euro 2016.
Ivan Perisic The midfielder, 27, has been mainly used in the league this season but he made a 27-minute cameo appearance against Sparta Prague last time out. Scored nine times for Inter in his debut season following a £13.6m move from Wolfsburg. The Croatian international has two in seven games so far this season, following an impressive Euro 2016 in which he scored against the Czech Republic and Spain.
