Puel admits he doesn’t know his best team

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has been urged to play his strongest side as Saints take on Inter Milan in the San Siro tomorrow night – but the manager admits he isn’t certain of his best team.

Puel has made a policy of rotating his side for Europa League games with fixtures coming thick and fast.

However, with the magnitude of tomorrow’s Group K game in mind, many are hoping that Puel will play the strongest team at his disposal, including the likes of Charlie Austin.

For Puel it that isn’t straightforward, as he admitted in his pre-match press conference at the San Siro that he is unsure who that entails.

He said: “I don’t know my best team because all the time we can change five or six or nine players.

“For the moment we continue a good way with all the players.

“It’s important to keep all the squad with a good concentration. If we want to stay with good results and a good physical level for all the games it’s important to respect all my players.

“For example, of course this game is very important to us but after it is very important also the game away against Manchester City.

“All the games are important but for me my job is to have every time a good balance on the team with good players and good feeling between them, a good acquaintance. This is my job.”

Puel has club record signing Sofiane Boufal in his squad for the first time since his £16m summer signing, with Nathan Redmond the only big name rested for the game.

In the left back role he is without first choices Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett, while Cuco Martina is the only out and out right back with Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied also out due to injury.

Puel has been keen to rotate but it seems likely Sam McQueen will make an incredible first Saints start at the San Siro following his impressive display off the bench in the win over Burnley. Whether that rules him out for Manchester City remains to be seen.

Likewise, Martina could be asked to play all three games at right back, with Maya Yoshida potentially able to deputise in either role.

Tonight’s game will be Puel’s third experience of the San Siro, and he is hoping to add a second win to his CV.

“I come in this stadium one time as player and it was not a good thing against Milan in the semi-final of the Champions League, and a good thing the second time with Lille and we win here,” he smiled.

“For the third I hope a good result and to take pleasure to see my team play good football.”

Southampton boss wary of Inter Milan backlash after woes on and off the pitch

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged his players to keep calm, so they can take advantage of the potentially toxic atmosphere at the San Siro.

Southampton continue their Europa League bid with a Thursday visit to fallen Italian giants Inter Milan, who have been rocked by a war between their captain Mauro Icardi and the club’s Ultras.

Striker Icardi sparked outrage by exaggerating his version of a clash with the supporters and claiming he would “bring 100 Argentinan criminals to kill them.”

Some fans were so enraged, they cheered when he missed a penalty against Cagliari last Sunday and unfurled anti-Icardi banners during the game.

In pictures — Southampton train at the San Siro for Thursday’s match:

While Icardi has managed to cling onto the captaincy after apologising and holding talks with club chiefs on Monday, that is unlikely to defuse the tensions after Inter’s Ultras responded to the decision to retain him by declaring he “is not our captain and never will be.”

Southampton meet Inter as equals six years after winning VERY different Cups

The bitter feud is another headache for Inter boss Frank de Boer, whose job is already on the line after just two months in charge following a poor start to the season that includes defeats in both Europa League group games so far.

Puel said: “It’s important to stay calm and it’s perhaps a big occasion for this team (Inter) to react as they need points, but for us it’s the same thing.

“They have good players and a good team to have a good reaction and we approach this game with calm and we prepare this game with all our possibilities.”

De Boer admitted: “The situation isn’t good for the team, the fans and the club.

Boss De Boer admits Inter are “distracted” by row ahead of Southampton game

“In the future, we shall avoid similar episodes because it distracts everyone from the game and eventually it affects our performance.

“Icardi also must learn from this because he is the captain. I think he has understood that he must set an example for teammates and fans.”

Southampton trip to face Inter Milan just another game, says Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Southampton’s trip to the San Siro to face Inter Milan is just another game as they look to progress in the Europa League.

Frank de Boer’s side are under pressure and sit 11th in Serie A after three defeats from their opening eight games while the situation has been worsened by a row between captain Mauro Icardi and a section of the club’s fans.

Inter have also suffered two defeats from two in the Europa League, but Puel wants Southampton to remain calm on Thursday as they aim to take advantage of the turmoil surrounding the Nerazzurri.

“It’s important to stay calm. Perhaps it’s a big occasion for Inter to react as they need points but for us it’s the same thing,” Puel said.

"They have good players and a good team to have a good reaction and we approach this game with calm and we prepare this game with all our possibilities. This is most important.

“It’s important to stay with good concentration for every game of this Europa League. Of course, to play away at Inter Milan is exciting, but this is for us just a game. It’s important to try to take the three points. The result is very important now for qualification.”

Puel is expected to again rotate his team despite their convincing performance in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Burnley.

The in-form Nathan Redmond has not travelled to Milan, while full-backs Cedric Soares, Jeremy Pied, Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett are also all injured.

In their absence, Sam McQueen is expected to make his first start for the club having only made his first Premier League appearance as a substitute on Sunday. Puel described the fixture as “important” for the 21-year-old, but also revealed he remains uncertain over what his strongest team is.

“I don’t know my best team because all the time we can change five or six or nine players,” Puel added. "It’s important to keep all the squad with a good concentration. If we want to stay with good results and a good physical level for all the games it’s important to respect all my players.

"Of course this game is very important to us but after, the game away against Manchester City [on Sunday], is very important.

“All the games are important but for me my job is to have every time a good balance on the team with good players and good feeling between them, a good acquaintance. This is my job.”

Puel praises fantastic support

Show/hide article…

Saints will be backed by 6,715 supporters at the San Siro, as they look to tighten their grip on top spot in the UEFA Europa League.

And Puel hopes to reward the travelling fans with a memorable victory, as he delivered a message to them at his pre-match press conference.

He said: “I hope they take pleasure to see this stadium and I hope for a very good game between two good teams with good spirit and good football, because they like to play good football.

“We will see the result but it will be important to give a good message for all the team and for all of our fans.

“I think it is fantastic support and it’s important to continue this good relation with our fans.”

The San Siro has been a place where Puel himself has experienced mixed fortunes.

He was a part of the AS Monaco side, then under the stewardship of Arsene Wenger, that were beaten 3-0 in the Champions League semi-final by AC Milan in 1994, but he is looking for win number two there as a manager.

Puel explained: “I come in this stadium one time as player and it was not a good thing against Milan in the semi-final of the Champions League, and a good thing the second time with Lille and we win here.

“For the third time, I hope for a good result and to take pleasure in seeing my team play good football.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel wants cool heads against Inter Milan at San Siro

Show/hide article…

Angered by comments made by Icardi in his recent autobiography, the club’s Ultras produced banners that claimed he was a mercenary and even cheered when he missed a penalty in their recent 2-1 defeat by Cagliari.

Rumours also persist that manager Frank de Boer – who was only appointed during the summer and has overseen two defeats from two in the Europa League – is at risk of the sack, and Puel said: “It’s important to stay calm. Claude Puel wants calm Southampton ahead of Inter Milan clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel has instructed his players to stay calm as they aim to take advantage of the turmoil surrounding Inter Milan at San Siro on Thursday.

They face the Italians in the Europa League at a time when the pressure they were under after a poor start to the season has been worsened by a row between captain Mauro Icardi and the club’s fans.

Inter are 11th in Serie A after three defeats from their opening eight games and despite having heavily invested in their squad during the summer.

Angered by comments made by Icardi in his recent autobiography, the club’s Ultras produced banners that claimed he was a mercenary and even cheered when he missed a penalty in their recent 2-1 defeat by Cagliari.

Inter Milan v Southampton preview: Full-back injuries for Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton will play in one of the most high-profile European matches in their history when they travel to the San Siro to face Inter Milan on Thursday evening.

In their first ever competitive match against a Serie A team, Claude Puel knows victory would see his side move seven points clear of their opponents in the race to reach the Europa League knockout stages.

Southampton sit joint top of Group K after beating Sparta Prague and drawing with Hapoel Be’er Sheva, while Inter are bottom after losing to the same two opponents.

Inter are currently 11th in Serie A after three defeats from their opening eight games, despite heavy investment in their squad during the summer.

A row between Mauro Icardi and the club’s fans has dominated the build-up to the match in Italy after the publication of the club captain’s controversial autobiography.

Inter’s Ultras produced banners that claimed he was a mercenary and even cheered when he missed a penalty in their recent 2-1 defeat by Cagliari.

Puel will have to cope with injuries to his first-choice full-backs on Thursday night. Cedric Soares, Jeremy Pied, Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett are all absent, meaning Cuco Martina and Sam McQueen - who could make his first start for the club at the San Siro - are expected to deputise.

Fit-again club-record signing Sofiane Boufal is available for the first time since his summer arrival, but the in-form Nathan Redmond has been rested and has not travelled to Milan.

Inter coach Frank de Boer has hinted midfielder Marcelo Brozovic could return to the team after being frozen out since the defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in September.

Both Geoffrey Kondogbia and Joao Mario are unavailable for the Italians.

This will be the first ever meeting between Inter Milan and Southampton. Inter have faced 11 different English sides before in European competition (including Fairs Cup).

Inter Milan’s most recent games against an English side saw them eliminated by Spurs in the last 16 in 2012/13. They lost 3-0 away before winning the second leg 4-1, only to go out on away goals.

Southampton have failed to score in six of their last seven European away matches (including qualifiers). This is the first time they’ve played in Italy in European competition.

Inter have lost their last four games in European competition. Only once before have they done this, losing four consecutively in the Fairs Cup in 1961.

Charlie Austin has scored from two of his three shots in this competition so far.

Only Zorya Luhansk (21.4 per cent) have a lower shooting accuracy than Inter Milan this season in the Europa League group stage (26.1 per cent).

James Ward-Prowse has created more chances for Southampton than any other player has for the Saints so far in the Europa League (6).

We know that this Inter Milan team aren’t a great one, but it will still be a great experience for Southampton to play at the San Siro.

The Saints are going well. They are defensively nice and solid and they’re scoring more goals now with Charlie Austin getting another couple on Sunday. Nathan Redmond is also playing well.

However, Virgil van Dijk is probably their most important player. He’s good in the air, he’s not the quickest over five yards but he’s quick over 15-20, and he’s great on the ball. He’s quite like John Stones with a bit more muscle.

He can take a risk as well. He got away with a stonewall penalty against Burnley and I’d suggest he’d be unlikely to get away with that if he did it again in the San Siro.

I do wonder whether Southampton will create enough chances. I reckon Claude Puel and might want to give Shane Long a game and play on the counter-attack to cancel out their hosts.

Claude Puel urges Southampton to embrace the hate in San Siro clash with Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

Saints face one of the most high profile matches in their history against the three times former European champions tonight. Inter fans are furious with skipper Mauro Icardi for blasting them in his autobiography and even cheered when their Argentine missed a penalty at the weekend. And Southampton boss Puel urged his team to cool themselves to benefit from the rebellious atmosphere.

The Frenchman said: “When a team needs points in the championship or in a cup the fans are sometimes angry and it’s the same for all the clubs.

“For us it’s important to take a good concentration on our play” “For us it’s important to take a good concentration on our play. “It’s true it will be a strong game for us and for them, but it’s important to stay with calm with all the situation going on around. “It’s important for us to prepare for this game and to give a good answer with all the situations.

“It’s important to stay calm and it’s perhaps a big occasion for this team to react as they need points - but for us it’s the same thing. “They have good players and a good team and we approach this game with calm with all our possibilities.” Puel is set to hand academy graduate Sam McQueen his full debut because of injuries to left-backs Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett. He added: “I am lucky because I think we have a good squad with good young players and a good balance between experienced play and maturity of young players.”

Only six years the south coast club were playing in League One. Serbian winger Dusan Tadic believes this is the best opportunity Saints’ will ever have to pull off a coup by beating the Italian giants. Tadic said: “It is a big opportunity for us. This is a big club. If they don’t win one or two games there is pressure. They want to win every match, but so do we. “For us it is just another match. We are professional, we are focussed on every match. Our coach teaches us that the story is just for that match and to be focused.
