GK: David De Gea (Manchester United) - Probably the best goalkeeper in the world now, he has to be chosen, even at the expense of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba

THE Premier League is packed with top talent, and we’ve picked what we think is the best line-up possible featuring just one player per club.

Some difficult decisions had to be made with only place available for the likes of Tottenham’s Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld and Son Heung-Min to compete for.

And how can you choose between Manchester City ataccking aces Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and David Silva?

Frank de Boer unhappy at Mauro Icardi’s Ultras row ahead of Southampton game

Show/hide article…

Inter boss Frank de Boer admits his side have been distracted by controversial captain Mauro Icardi’s row with the club’s fans ahead of Southampton 's visit to the San Siro.

Southampton face Inter in their third Europa League group game tomorrow evening.

The fallen Italian giants’ preparations have been overshadowed after Icardi insulted the club’s Ultras in his recently publicised autobiography.

He has managed to retain the captaincy and is expected to start against Southampton after apologising and holding talks with club chiefs this week but boss De Boer said: "The situation (with Icardi) isn’t good for the team, the fans and the club.

"In the future, we shall avoid similar episodes because it distracts everyone from the game and eventually it affects our performance.

"We all have to avoid a repeat because for me it’s very important that players and staff stay focused on the game only.

“Icardi also must learn from this because he is the captain. I think he has understood that he must set an example for teammates and fans.”

The dispute is another headache for De Boer who is under pressure after a poor start to the season.

Inter have won just three out of 10 games under De Boer and are languishing in mid-table in Serie A.

A third straight Europa League group defeat could cost the Dutchman his job but De Boer has pleaded for time.

Southampton’s Sam McQueen set to make first EVER Saints start in the San Siro against Inter Milan

“We are at the start of a project and the club is aware of this. I feel like I am running in Formula 1 - we are trying to rush improvements in a short space of time,” he said.

“There you can run only when everything is fine with the car. I might need two or four weeks to invert this trend, but it’s difficult to say because it also depends on how much time the team need to improve. They have to know the staff and vice versa.”

Southampton new boy Sofiane Boufal could make his debut for the English Premier League side after he was named in the squad for Thursday’s Europa League clash at Inter Milan.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder injured his knee playing for Ligue 1 team Lille earlier this year and had to undergo an operation.

The Morocco international scored 12 goals in 34 appearances for Lille last season, helping them reach the French League Cup final and finish fifth in Ligue 1.

Manager Claude Puel’s Southampton, who have gone seven games unbeaten in all competitions, have four points from the opening two Europa League Group K games.

Match Preview: Inter vs Saints

Show/hide article…

What’s at stake?

For Inter, it is reaching do or die stage in Group K. Having suffered defeat in each of their opening games, another loss would likely leave the Italian club with too much to do.

There is additional pressure on the team and their manager, Frank de Boer, having lost their last three across all competitions, with the side currently lying 11th in Serie A after their opening eight matches.

When it comes to Southampton, a victory could prove to be something approaching a decisive blow, having taken four points from their opening two games, with that leaving them level at the top of the group with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Another three points would put Claude Puel’s side in a significant position of strength, as they bid to secure a place in the knockout stages.

Team news

Inter: Midfielder Marcelo Brozović could be in line for a return to the side, after being absent for the last couple of weeks, with Frank de Boer revealing he is ready to play.

Top scorer and captain Mauro Icardi, who has drawn the ire of some Inter fans for comments in his autobiography, also remains in contention to feature, despite being sanctioned by the club.

Southampton: Saints are without Nathan Redmond, Cédric, Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett, who are absent from the 21-man party for the trip.

Club-record signing Sofiane Boufal is included in the group, and could be in line to make his debut for the club.

Form Guide

Inter’s last five:

Cagliari (h) L 1-2

Roma (a) L 1-2

Sparta Praha (a) L 1-3 (UEFA Europa League)

Bologna (h) D 1-1

Empoli (a) W 2-0

Southampton’s last five:

Burnley (h) W 3-1

Leicester (a) D 0-0

Hapoel Be’er Sheva (a) D 0-0 (Europa League)

West Ham (a) W 3-0

Crystal Palace (h) W 2-0 (EFL Cup)

Top performers

Inter’s stand-out player this season has been Mauro Icardi, with the striker having contributed seven goals across all competitions, as well as three assists.

The Argentinian has only been used as a substitute in the team’s opening two Europa League matches, but could play a bigger role tomorrow, with the Italian side in need of a win.

However, it has been a difficult week for the captain, who offended a portion of Inter fans with a passage in his autobiography, leading him to make an apology this week, while also being sanctioned by the club.

Top scorer: Mauro Icardi (7)

Most assists: Mauro Icardi, Antonio Candreva (3)

Charlie Austin has extended his lead as Southampton’s top scorer this season, with his double in the 3-1 win over Burnley taking his tally for the campaign to seven.

Two of those goals have come in the Europa League, as he netted twice in the 3-0 victory over Sparta Praha. Austin did not have a chance to add to that total against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, as he was rested for the trip to Israel.

Top scorer: Charlie Austin (7)

Most assists: Six players (1)

Previous meetings

This will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Inter are fairly well-versed against English opposition, though, having faced 11 different sides during their history.

Did you know?

– Only two English sides have beaten Inter away from home – Arsenal, in 2003, and Liverpool, in 2008.

– However, Inter have lost their last four games in European competition, which has only happened to them once before, in 1961.

– Charlie Austin has taken three shots in the Europa League this season, and scored with two of them.

– Inter have the second lowest shooting accuracy in the Europa League group stage right now, with their 26.1 per cent ahead of Zorya Lubansk’s 21.4 per cent.

Puel: Treat it like any other game

Show/hide article…

Saints visit the iconic stadium tomorrow for the third match of their UEFA Europa League group stage campaign, as they bid for a famous result.

While it is a match that has been highly anticipated ever since the draw was made, Puel insists he and his players must remain grouned.

“I think this game is very important, but it’s one of the games for the qualification,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“It’s important to stay with good concentration for every game of this Europa League. Of course, to play away at Inter Milan is exciting, but this is just a game for us.

“It’s important to try to take the three points. The result is very important now for qualification.

“Of course, it’s a great team with great players, but we need points, and it’s the same for this team.”

Inter Milan v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s record signing Sofiane Boufal could make his debut for the club in the Europa League against Inter Milan on Thursday.

The attacking midfielder, 23, joined the Saints for £16m in the summer but is yet to play due to a knee injury.

Midfielder Nathan Redmond plus defensive pair Cedric Soares and Matt Targett have not travelled to Italy.

The Saints are seven games unbeaten in all competitions and have four points from two Europa League games.

The match at the San Siro will be the first meeting between the two clubs and comes six years after Inter last won the Champions League.

That same season Southampton, then managed by Alan Pardew, won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and finished seventh in League One.

Inter have lost their opening two games in Group K, have lost three in a row in all competitions and are currently 11th in Serie A.

Puel urges ‘calm’ amid toxic atmosphere at Inter

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has warned his players to keep calm amid the threat of a toxic atmosphere hanging over Southampton’s Europa League tie against Inter Milan.

The Serie A side’s supporters have turned on captain Mauro Icardi for some ill-judged comments made in his recently published autobiography. During their 2-1 defeat to Cagliari last Sunday they held up banners branding him a mercenary and even cheered when the striker missed a penalty.

Icardi, 23, started a bitter feud with the club’s fans by boasting that he had become an idol in the dressing room for standing up to one of the leaders of their Curva Nord ultras during an altercation in 2015.

Icardi claimed he had a row about giving his shirt to a young fan, but they disputed his version of events.

The striker also further inflamed the situation by claiming in the book that he would 'bring 100 criminals from Argentina who will kill them’. Enraged supporters turned up at the Argentinian’s house this week.

It means the atmosphere in the San Siro on Thursday evening is likely to be an unusual one and Southampton’s manager has advised his players to try to ignore it. ‘It’s important for us to prepare for this game and to give a good answer with all the situations,’ Puel said.

‘It’s important to stay calm and it’s perhaps a big occasion for this team to react as they need points. They have good players and a good team to have a good reaction and we approach this game with calm and we prepare this game with all our possibilities. This is most important.’

It is a remarkable turnaround in fortunes from six years ago when Inter won the treble under Jose Mourinho and claimed their fourth successive Serie A title, while Southampton lifted the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and finished seventh in League One with a 10-point deduction for going into administration.

Inter manager Frank De Boer is wary Icardi’s war with the club’s supporters is in danger of overshadowing the match. In the wake of the Cagliari farce, Inter held a board meeting on Monday and debated whether to strip him of the captaincy.

The player publicly apologised and they decided he would remain in the role, but in response their ultras group released a statement saying Icardi ‘is not our captain and never will be’.

De Boer said: ‘The situation isn’t good for the team, the fans and the club. In the future, we shall avoid similar episodes because it distracts everyone from the game and eventually it affects our performance.

'We all have to avoid a repeat because for me it’s very important that players and staff stay focused on the game only. Icardi also must learn from this because he is the captain.

'I think he has understood that he must set an example for teammates and fans.’
