McQueen taking it one step at a time

Show/hide article…

Sam McQueen says he’s not looking too far ahead, as he looks to build on his first Premier League appearance for Southampton.

After being propelled into the first-team on Sunday in the win over Burnley, McQueen appears to head the race for the left-back slot for Thursday night’s trip to Internazionale, but the defender isn’t thinking about playing at the San Siro just yet.

“You plan ahead, but I’m always just looking at what’s in front of you and it’s a case of just being ready if needed, so that’s what I’m focusing on now,” he said.

“Fitness is the main thing and getting in recovery to be ready if that is an option. I just want to be one hundred per cent ready to give everything again on Thursday if that is a possibility.”

McQueen not only helped shore up the defence over the weekend, he also had a hand in one of the Southampton goals, as he was brought down inside the area for Charlie Austin’s penalty midway through the second half.

“It was a penalty and it was a good pass from Dušan, which he’s always producing, so it was a chance to win the team a penalty and get a goal,” he said.

“I was thinking about shooting first-time and then I took the touch and felt the contact on me and maybe could have gone down a couple of steps earlier, but I wanted to stay up and try to take the shot to score a goal.”

The second half performance in that game is one that McQueen feels Saints can take on into their next fixture, as UEFA Europa League action returns for Saints in Italy.

“We’re happy with that,” he explained. “First half, we dominated possession and created a few chances, so we maybe should have been up at half-time, but we came out and did exactly the same second half, but probably kept the ball better and created even more chances and we could have won four, five, maybe six-nil.”

Mesut Ozil - ARSENAL v Swansea: The German playmaker marked his birthday with a superb volley in Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Swansea at the Emirates on Saturday.

Romelu Lukaku - Man City v EVERTON: Lukaku produced a brilliant solo effort to give Everton the lead at Manchester City. However, the goal wasn’t enough to give Ronald Koeman’s side victory as City hit back to secure a 1-1 draw.

Victor Moses - CHELSEA v Leicester: Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday with Moses rounding off the scoring with a cool finish after latching onto Nathaniel Chalobah’s back-heel.

Gylfi Sigurdsson - Arsenal v SWANSEA: The Iceland international pounced on Granit Xhaka’s loose pass before producing a brilliant finish, curling the ball beyond Petr Cech and into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Jose Holebas - Middlesbrough v WATFORD: Holebas’s stunning strike into the top corner sealed Watford a hard-fought 1-0 Premier League victory over Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Nathan Redmond - SOUTHAMPTON v Burnley: Redmond’s fine volley helped Southampton stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games following a comfortable 3-1 victory over Burnley on Nissan Super Sunday.

Which Premier League players could play at AFCON 2017?

Which Premier League players could play at AFCON 2017?

Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez and Eric Bailly are among the Premier League stars expected to be called up for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations at the start of next year.

The draw for the 16-team tournament takes place on Wednesday, with the action kicking off in Gabon on January 14 and ending with the final on February 5.

It’s bad news for a number of Premier League sides, with a host of African players expected to miss up to a month of domestic action which includes four rounds of league fixtures.

Based on recent call-ups, Leicester are likely to be the most affected side. Claudio Ranieri faces the prospect of losing four players - Algeria duo Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani, and Ghana’s Jeffrey Schlupp and Daniel Amartey - for a run of games that includes clashes with Chelsea, Southampton and Manchester United.

The Foxes are not the only ones who could suffer, with United’s Eric Bailly, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny likely to take part for Ivory Coast, Senegal and Egypt.

Stoke, Sunderland, Watford and West Ham could lose three players each, including Wilfried Bony, Lamine Kone (both Ivory Coast), Adlene Guedioura (Algeria) and Andre Ayew (Ghana) respectively.

Everton will have to cope without summer signings Yannick Bolasie and Idrissa Gueye, who represent DR Congo and Senegal, while Southampton could lose Morocco international Sofiane Boufal.

Burnley, Chelsea, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Swansea and Tottenham are the only Premier League sides likely to be unaffected. Read on for the full list…

Saints legend Franny recovering from his epic run

Show/hide article…

HIS trousers may not fit, but Franny Benali was just glad to be back in his own bed after completing his Big Race.

“It was nice to be able to look at the clock knowing for the first time in two weeks that I didn’t have to get up at 5.30am,” he smiled.

Franny’s 1,400-mile, two-week duathlon around the 44 clubs in English football’s top two divisions was completed at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, in front of 29,040 during the half-time interval of Saints’ 3-1 win against Burnley.

“It was spine-tingling to receive that reception. It’s greatly appreciated by the whole family,” said Franny, whose exhaustion was such that there were no wild celebrations with Karen, Kenzie and Luke back home in Highfield.

After sharing a meal, they enjoyed their best night’s sleep for several weeks.

“We had a proper spag bol, which was very welcome after eating a lot of convenience food,” he said.

“When I tried putting a pair of trousers on they certainly felt a lot looser and there’s a bit of muscle wastage to my upper body.

“But I don’t feel too injured. My achilles is pretty swollen, but I’m sure that will go down. Although the hamstring was a problem at one point it’s a lot better for being strapped up.

“I’m not resting completely, I’ll probably get back on the bike with a turbo trainer. But won’t be running for a while yet!”

Despite that, 47 year-old Franny will not be setting himself a third endurance challenge anytime soon.

“Never say never but this felt tougher than the first one,” said the former Saints star, whose Big Race was preceded by Benali’s Big Run; a 1,000-mile, three-week odyssey of all 20 Premier League clubs in September 2014.

“I thought it would be at least ten days before there was something to be concerned about, but I had niggles and strains from day one this time,” he continued.

“I also saw how draining and all-consuming it’s been for the whole family and support team for the last few months. Everyone was so devoted to the challenge.”

Franny’s Big Run raised £265,000 and last night he had raised almost £100,000, plus the promise of £25,000 from Saints, to take his combined efforts for Cancer Research UK to around £390,000.

“I’m extremely grateful to everyone that’s donated,” he said.

Connections: FC Internazionale

Show/hide article…

Southampton have never played Internazionale competitively before, but there are a number of links between their current squad and Southampton’s.

Saints head to the San Siro for the first time in their history on Thursday night and they share more than a UEFA Europa League qualifying group as some common ground.

Inter midfielder Éver Banega and Saints’ Oriol Romeu played together on loan at Valencia during 2013/14.

The Italian side’s third choice goalkeeper Tommaso Berni was a Wimbledon teammate of Kelvin Davis at the turn of the millennium. During that time, another ex-Saint, David Connolly was top scorer two seasons running (2001-2002, 2002-2003).

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster and full-back Davide Santon were at Newcastle United together for a short time, but never played together.

Inter full-back Yuto Nagatomo is an international teammate of Saints’ Maya Yoshida, and they played together in Japan’s 2-1 win over Iraq earlier this month (main picture).

Inter’s defensive midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia appeared for Lens against Jérémy Pied’s Lyon in a French league game during 2010.

Summer signing João Mário, who is not eligible for the Europa League this season – is a former Sporting teammate of Cédric, while they both also line up for Portugal with José Fonte.

Another midfielder, Gary Medel, played at St Mary’s for Cardiff alongside one time Saints loanee Steven Caulker in 2014.

Attacking players Saphir Taïder and Dani Osvaldo have represented both clubs.

Two Saints academy graduates have had notable games at San Siro, both against Inter - Alan Shearer scored twice there in a Champions League tie for Newcastle during 2003, while Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick in 2010 for Tottenham.
