Rookie McQueen set for first EVER Southampton start in the iconic San Siro

Show/hide article…

Southampton rookie Sam McQueen could be set for a San Siro baptism of fire.

Claude Puel’s Saints travel to face Inter Milan for their glamour Europa League tie on Thursday down to the bare bones at full-back.

Their Euro 2016-winning right-back Cedric Soares is out with a foot problem and is expected to be joined on the sidelines by left-back Matt Targett, who limped out of Sunday’s win over Burnley with a hamstring injury.

No1 left-back Ryan Bertrand is also a big doubt having suffered hamstring damage playing for England against Malta 10 days ago.

With another full-back option, summer signing Jeremy Pied, already out for the season, Cuco Martina will continue to deputise for Soares and now Academy product McQueen is in line to make his first ever Southampton start on the opposite flank in one of world football’s most iconic stadiums.

The 21-year-old finally made his Premier League debut at the weekend as Targett’s replacement and impressed, winning the penalty that became Saints’ third goal.

His league bow came two-and-a-half years after his debut for the club, as a late sub in an FA Cup tie against Sunderland in February 2014.

Playing in the San Siro will be another step up for McQueen, who came through the ranks with Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and James Ward-Prowse and is being converted from a winger into a full-back.

He can’t wait for his next taste of first-team action, saying: “It’s been years and years of hard work.

“It’s my movie moment to come on at St Mary’s and make my debut.

“The thing is, it’s over so quickly and by tomorrow I’ll want to play again.

"I just want to get onto the next game and before I know it hopefully I’ll be playing regularly or far into my career.”

Southampton ace hoping to make full debut against Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

Homegrown talent McQueen, 21, is the latest left-back to storm through the famed Saints academy – after megastars Gareth Bale and Luke Shaw.

Boss Claude Puel turned to McQueen during Sunday’s 3-1 victory against Burnley, after Matt Targett became the Saints’ fourth crocked full-back along with Ryan Bertrand, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied.

And converted winger McQueen is hoping Puel trusts him to do a job against Inter Milan in the Europa League on Thursday.

He said: “I hope I can play at the San Siro. I will do everything in the next few days to get ready for it and show I should be playing.

“It’s been years and years of hard work to get to this stage. It’s my movie moment to come on at St Mary’s and make my debut.

Ex-Saint Puncheon’s twitter outburst at football manager debated by MPs

Show/hide article…

Football manager Neil Warnock made players pay to be selected for games, a committee of MPs heard.

The allegation came from tweets from former Saints midfielder Jason Puncheon in 2014 on Twitter, which were quickly deleted.

Puncheon, now at Crystal Palace, also alleged that Warnock was “crooked” and was “ruining the game”.

Puncheon’s claims, which have been denied by Warnock, were repeated in Westminster on Monday by Damian Collins, the chairman-elect of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

Collins, the Conservative MP for Folkstone and Hythe, was questioning Football Association chairman Greg Clarke about the governing body’s attempts to investigate possible wrongdoing in the game and cited Puncheon’s outburst as an example of an allegation that was not pursued.

Warnock, however, says the allegations were looked at and has issued a strong denial.

“These allegations are completely and utterly false,” the 67-year-old, now Cardiff manager, said in a statement.

"The FA Commission considered all of the evidence in detail in 2014 and it found that the allegations which were published about me were unfounded. Any suggestion that the FA failed to investigate this matter is simply untrue.

"In fact, Mr Puncheon apologised to me and removed the allegations from his Twitter account. The FA fined him £15,000 and he was warned as to his future conduct.

“I am disappointed that these allegations have been repeated after Mr Puncheon’s apology and after the FA investigated fully. If anyone had asked me the truth before publication, I would have pointed them to the FA website, where the facts are all easily accessible.”

Puncheon’s fine came about for bringing the game into disrepute.

But using parliamentary privilege, which gives MPs and witnesses protection for libel laws, Collins said: "The tweets have been deleted but for the benefit of the committee they are still available online, although they’re not on his Twitter account.

"(Puncheon) said: 'What I won’t accept is an opinion from a man who’s crooked and ruining the game.

"'Neil Warnock, the man who signs players, gives them extra wages and appearance bonuses to make sure that they pay him to get into the team or on the bench.

“'The fact he could even talk about training is shocking, he was never there.”’

Puncheon was reacting to a comment Warnock, who has managed 15 different clubs in a 37-year career, made as a pundit when the Palace player missed a penalty in a 2-0 defeat by Spurs.

Clarke, who has only been FA chairman for five weeks, told Collins he did not know if the FA investigated Puncheon’s claims about Warnock but suggested it certainly should have done so.

“I think it would be pretty poor if someone has gone public and they don’t have any contact from the FA asking why have they made this allegation,” said Clarke.

Robert Sullivan, the FA’s director of strategy, was sitting alongside Clarke and he said: "Where the line is difficult to draw is bringing forward real evidence that can actually be used to take an investigation forward.

“There are comments made on social media and there is actual hard evidence that the investigators can actually use to bring forward a case and a charge.”

Clarke explained that this was a common problem for the FA’s 33-strong team of compliance officers and investigators, and denied the failure to successfully prosecute charges was a result of any lack of interest in tackling corruption.

"There’s a surfeit of people who say Fred or Mary is a villain. You then talk to Fred or Mary and they deny it and there’s no third-party corroboration, no paper trail.

“So we focus on the cases where we can find that evidence.”

England not on Charlie Austin’s mind

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin insists that he has not got an England call-up on his mind despite his sensational scoring form for Saints.

Top scorer Austin has been unstoppable this term, netting seven goals in as many games in all competitions.

The 27-year-old added two more to his tally against his former club Burnley on Sunday, thrusting him further into Gareth Southgate’s gaze.

If Austin’s form continues it would be almost impossible for the Three Lions boss to overlook the striker for a call up for the World Cup qualifier against Scotland and a friendly versus Spain next month.

But the former QPR man, who has been called up for England once before but didn’t play in May 2015 for two Euro 2016 qualifiers, would rather just concentrate on continuing his hot form for Saints.

“No, I’m just here to put in performances,” he said when asked about getting the call from Southgate. “If it happens, great, if not I’ll be here just working hard trying to score as many goals for Southampton as possible.

“I’ve got a job to do here at Southampton.”

“We need to push on now,” he continued. “We’ve got a big game on Thursday against Inter Milan and we’ve got an even bigger one in the league against Man City.”

Austin has got his sights set on more goals during Saints’ rammed fixture list, which includes six games between now and the next international break in three weeks time.

The former Poole Town man is hoping to be involved for Saints in their huge trip to Inter Milan in the Europa League on Thursday.

Although, with Claude Puel constantly rotating his team, there are no guarantees that he’ll be used at the San Siro with a trip to Manchester City in the Premier League just three days later.

Austin was rested alongside Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Bertrand for the Hapoel Be’er Sheva game in Israel last time out in Europe and Puel has already stated that he will continue to tinker with his side.

“Whatever the gaffer wants,” said Austin. “He rotates it and that’s the way it is. Hopefully I am [involved] but I just want to stay fit, keep scoring goals and helping the team put in performances like that today.”

Austin made it four goals in as many games against his former employer Burnley on Sunday.

Both of his goals at St Mary’s he celebrated fervently and insists he’d do that against any of his old clubs. “People ask me: ‘against old clubs, do you celebrate?’” he said. “Yes I celebrate every goal I score.

“I don’t play for Burnley anymore. I have great respect for them, but I score goals and play for Southampton. I enjoy every moment. That’s my job to put the ball in the net.”

He added: “To be honest, some people do it out of respect. I have respect for them. I scored 45 goals in 90 games for them.

“I’m here to score goals and it was the same for QPR I’d celebrate against Burnley. I scored against them today and I celebrate. I play for this club now, not Burnley.”

Will Inter’s hottest goal ace be back on the bench for Saints’ visit?

Show/hide article…

MAURO Icardi is one of the hottest talents in Italy right now.

The 23-year-old Inter Milan forward was top scorer in Serie A in 2014/15 with 22 goals, writes SIMON CARTER.

Last season he was fourth highest with 16 and he is currently joint top with six goals in his first eight league appearances of 2016/17.

It would have been seven goals had he not missed a penalty at the weekend - which, due to his comments in his autobiography criticising a member of the Inter Ultras fan group, was cheered by some supporters who have now turned against him.

Icardi has just signed a new contract at the San Siro which will pay him a reported £5m a year and contains a massive £99m buy out clause - which can only be activated by non-Italian clubs.

He had previously been linked with Europe’s elite - the likes of Paris St Germain, Juventus, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid.

But whether Saints fans will see much of the Argentinian this Thursday is open to question.

Inter boss Frank de Boer has yet to start Icardi in the Europa League campaign this term.

Instead, he has been limited to two substitute appearances of about 20 minutes each in the losses to Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Sparta Prague.

The Daily Echo has previously reported how de Boer has left around £100m worth of signings out of his 25-man Europa League squad.

Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa and midfield star Joao Mario, who joined Inter towards the end of the transfer window for a combined 70 million Euros, were left off the list and so cannot feature in the group stages.

Barbosa is considered am exciting talent, having been tracked by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

He was part of the Brazil squad which won the gold medal at the Rio Olympics.

Mario - who scored Inter’s goal in Sunday’s 2-1 home Serie A loss to Cagliari - was part of the Portugal squad that won Euro 2016, Inter’s two big summer signings from the previous season, €31m French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic, have also been left out.

Between them, that quartet cost almost as much as Saints paid for their entire squad.

Inter left them out because they were in danger of breaching the Financial Fair Play rules in European competitions imposed by UEFA.

If the four players were in their squad, the 2010 Champions League winners would run the risk of a substantial fine and potentially a transfer ban.

Yet, obviously, there is still so much quality available to de Boer for Saints’ visit.

Icardi, who has scored 58 goals in 111 appearances for Inter since making his debut in 2013, is the stand-out name.

De Boer can also call on current Italian internationals Antonio Candreva, who cost €22m in the summer, and Eder as well as Argentinian midfielder Ever Banega.

Croatian star Ivan Perisic, an €18m signing from Wolfsburg in 2015, is also available and so is striker Rodrigo Palacio, 34, who was fourth highest Serie A scorer in 2013/14 with 17 goals.

Saints fans braced for transport ‘chaos’ ahead of crunch match against European giants

Show/hide article…

IT is believed to be the biggest exodus of Saints fans in the club’s history.

But a"national general transport strike" in Italy is expected to affect most of the 6,715 fans who have bought tickets for the Europa League group game against Inter Milan in the San Siro.

One leading Saints supporter admits there could be “potential chaos” for those returning from Milan on Friday.

Saints took tickets off sale yesterday - with most of the club’s 8,700 allocation sold - before a statement from the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office warned of the strike, which “may cause delays and/or cancellations of flights and trains.”

Saints fan Nick Illingsworth, of the Ugly Inside fanzine, is one of those travelling to Milan today, before returning on Friday.

He said: "There’s the potential for chaos.

"Everyone will get there ok but I would estimate that at least half of those going are coming back on the Friday.

"That’s what I’m doing but I have mates coming back on the Saturday so I have a back-up plan - sleeping on a mate’s hotel room floor!

“There are worst places to be stuck than Milan but it may be that there aren’t too many disruptions. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

According to the website summerinitaly.com, train staff will be on strike for eight hours from 9am-5pm and airline staff all day.

But no flights have been cancelled yet.

A spokesperson for British Airways told the Daily Echo: “We are aware of the threatened strike action and are awaiting further information on this from the Italian authorities.”

Those travelling to Milan have been told by the Foreign Office to “check with your travel provider for more information before departure”.

The 7,000-plus travelling fans are expected to make up around a quarter of the total attendance, with around 30,000 likely to be at the San Siro to see Saints take on one of the world’s greatest clubs.

Under UEFA rules, Inter were not obligated to provide an allocation more than five per cent of the San Siro’s 80,000 capacity.

But Inter, the best supported club in Italy with an average crowd of 53,095 from their three home games this season, made more available to meet the demand from Saints fans.

“It’s a great draw, in all my years of following Saints we’ve always drawn fairly non-descript teams when we’ve been in European competition,” added Illingsworth.

"The first time I saw Saints in Europe was away to Limerick in the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1981.

"Their ground wasn’t even as good as Eastleigh’s is now. The away stand was basically wooden planks on scaffolding!

"The only other trip I can think of that was as glamorous was Hamburg in 1984 - but we probably didn’t have more than 2,000 there.

“We took about 3,000 to ]Steaua] Bucharest in 2003 and last year there were about 1,700 in Vitesse Arnhem.”

Most Saints fans are flying from Heathrow and Gatwick to Milan Linate or Malpensa, two of the city’s three airports, from where they will make the journey to the San Siro via train and/or tram.

Others are flying from Stansted and Southampton via Paris, Genoa, Turin and Verona.

There is likely to be a strong police presence at the San Siro, especially in the wake of the furore that followed the recent publication of Inter captain Mauro Icardi’s autobiography, which provoked the ire of the club’sUltra fans.

They booed Icardi’s penalty miss in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Cagliari, before a group of 40 Ultras gathered at the home of the club’s star player.

They reportedly tried to attack his car as he returned with his wife before leaving when a security guard with a gun in his holster appeared.

The Foreign Office has reminded Saints fans to carry ID at all times, with their passport needed to gain entry to the stadium.

Fans will not be allowed in with “large amounts of coins, belts with large buckles and heavy cigarette lighters”.

Its website says “entry/security procedures may take some time to complete before the game and at the end of the game you’ll be asked to stay in the stadium for a short time to allow the home supporters’ area to be cleared.”

Saints fans are also advised to have their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), to take out travel insurance and to be wary of “pickpockets and bag snatchers at airports, railway stations, around the town centre and when using public transport”.

The Foreign Office statement adds: “The Italian government has a zero tolerance policy on hooliganism both inside and outside the stadium.”

Panel: Aviation, train and public transport will all fall victim to a general strike that has been ordered by the 250,000 members of the USB Work Private Trade Union for October 21.

It will see devastation for travel plans from Italy the day after Southampton visit the San Siro in the Europa League.

The strike will involve airport workers and air traffic control but the full impact of the strike is not yet known.

Air control operator Techno Sky announced with USB on September 29 that the strike will take place.

Train travel will be disrupted with a strike taking place from 9am until 5pm on the Trenord services who operate the regional trains in Lombardy, where Milan is located within.

If your train departs before 9am and is scheduled to arrive at its final destination before 10am on that day then the journey should remain unaffected.

Trains to the airports on the Malpensa Express and Malpensa Airport-Bellinzona will be subject to the strike and replaced with buses to the stations, but they will not stop everywhere.

Other public transport is also on a 24 hour strike that will affect the region of Lombardy with Ferries also out of action for the entirety of Friday.

Inter Milan facing crisis situation ahead of Saints’ Europa League trip

Show/hide article…

INTER Milan are approaching a crisis situation ahead of Saints’ Europa League visit to the San Siro this week.

The legendary Italian club were beaten at home by Cagliari in Serie A on Sunday - at the same time Saints were beating Burnley at St Mary’s.

Inter have now lost three successive games in all competitions and storm clouds are already gathering over the head of manager Frank de Boer, writes SIMON CARTER.

In addition, star striker and captain Mauro Icardi was booed by a section of the Inter fans, who paraded banners criticising him for comments made in his recently-published autobiography.

The same fans cheered when Icardi missed a first half penalty prior to a late own goal condemning Inter to a defeat which leaves them down in 11th place and already 10 points adrift of leaders and defending champions Juventus.

Inter goalkeeper Sami Handanovic inadvertently forced the ball over his own goalline in the 85th minute to seal victory for the visitors after Cagliari striker Federico Melchiorri had cancelled out Joao Mario’s 55th-minute opener.

De Boer has lost exactly half of his 10 domestic and European matches in charge of Inter since replacing Roberto Mancini in August.

In addition to three Serie A defeats in eight games, Inter are also rooted to the bottom of their Europa League group after losing to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the San Siro and at Sparta Prague.

Fielding a much changed starting XI, Inter lost 2-0 to Hapoel and followed that up by crashing 3-1 to a Sparta side who had previously been thrashed 3-0 at St Mary’s.

De Boer now faces the dilemma of whether to keep faith with Icardi up front for Saints’ visit, or start with him on the bench - as he has done for both of Inter’s Europa League losses so far.

Some Inter fans have certainly lost faith in Icardi, who criticised one of the club’s Ultras in his book for taking a shirt off a young fan after the player had given it to him following a defeat at Sassuolo.

Icardi was one of several Inter players who threw their shirts into the crowd, only to see them thrown back as the travelling Nerazzurri support displayed their anger at the performance.

In his book, Icardi criticises the Ultra, accusing him of acting “all arrogant.”

Fans in the Curva Nord - the section of the San Siro containing the most passionater Inter supporters - were instantly incensed.

The released a statement, telling Icardi: “You are finished with us. You’re done. TAKE THE ARMBAND OFF, YOU CLOWN. Yes, that is what we demand.”

Sunday’s game against Cagliari was the first at the San Siro since Icardi’s book was published.
