Mixed night for Long with Ireland

Show/hide article…

Shane Long opened the scoring in Republic of Ireland’s 3-1 win in Moldova, but was forced off with an injury in the second half.

Saints striker Long latched onto a Wes Hoolahan through pass to slot home inside the opening three minutes of the World Cup qualifying match.

He was forced off shortly after the hour mark, with the score at 1-1, following Igor Bugaev’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Despite having to leave the action, Long was able to celebrate a win, as James McClean netted two quick-fire goals to help the Irish follow up Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Georgia.

Ireland now have seven points from their opening three games on the road to the 2018 finals in Russia, and they will visit Austria for their next qualifier, in November.

Tadić stars in Serbia victory

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Dušan Tadić was the hero for Serbia, as he made two goals and scored the winner in their 3-2 victory over Austria.

The Saints playmaker laid on a pair of goals for Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrović in the first half of the World Cup qualifier.

However, Serbia were pegged back by the visitors on both occasions.

It didn’t matter, though, as Tadić continued his superb run of form, netting a sweet right-footed strike in the 72nd minute to keep Serbia top of Group D, with seven points from three matches, just ahead of Shane Long’s Republic of Ireland on goal difference.

World Cup qualifying round up

Show/hide article…

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice as Serbia beat Austria 3-2 to take over as the new leaders of Group D.

Georgia’s 1-1 draw in Wales put top spot up for grabs and Serbia moved into pole position as Mitrovic’s goals came either side of one from Austria’s Marcel Sabitzer’s to make it 2-1 at half-time.

Marc Janko levelled things up again just past the hour only for Southampton’s Dusan Tadic to score a 74th-minute winner. The Republic of Ireland are level with Serbia on seven points after they beat Moldova 3-1.

Croatia lead the way in Group I after beating Finland 1-0 thanks to Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic’s solitary goal.

Iceland are second thanks to a 2-0 home win over Turkey after Omer Toprak’s own goal was followed by Alfred Finnbogason’s goal just before the break.

Ukraine’s Artem Kravets, Andriy Yarmolenko and Ruslan Rotan scored in a comfortable 3-0 win over Kosovo to move into third place.

Israel made it two wins out of three in Group G with a 2-1 victory over minnows Liechtenstein.

Tomer Hemed scored twice inside the opening 12 minutes but defender Maximilian Goppel scored Liechtenstein’s first goal of the campaign to make things difficult for the hosts in the second half.

Gibbs cuts short trip to Dubai to help ease England’s defensive crisis

Show/hide article…

Arsenal left back Kieran Gibbs has cut short a mid-season break in Dubai to help ease England’s defensive crisis.

Gibbs has received a late call-up to the squad for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifying clash against Slovenia.

He has been drafted in as cover for Danny Rose, after Ryan Bertrand sustained a hamstring injury early in the first half during Saturday’s win over Malta.

Rose, too, has been suffering with a hamstring problem, which was why he was not in the starting line-up at Wembley on Saturday.

England’s interim manager Gareth Southgate is hopeful the Tottenham defender will be fit to start on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, Gibbs left his luxurious surroundings to answer his country’s call, and met up with the England squad on Sunday night.

He will train under Southgate at Spurs’ Enfield HQ on Monday morning before boarding the flight to Ljubjlana.

In addition to Bertrand, Southgate has seen defenders Glen Johnson and Phil Jagielka withdraw from his squad.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was drafted in to replace Tom Heaton on Sunday night. The Burnley stopper has a minor knock.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had given Gibbs permission to have a few days off during the international break.

But the 27-year-old player moved quickly to ensure he was available given his desire to play for his country again.

Gibbs was at the centre of controversy in March when, in similar circumstances, Roy Hodgson called up the defender for the friendly against Holland.

At that time Gibbs was on another mid-season break — this time in America — and was unable to catch a flight home to England in time.

Majestic Tadic steers Serbia to 3-2 win over Austria

Show/hide article…

The result propelled Serbia to the top of the section on seven points from three games, ahead of Ireland on goal difference.

The Irish kept up the pace with a 3-1 win at Moldova, while Wales slipped to third on five points after a 1-1 home draw with Georgia. Austria have four points, Georgia one and Moldova none.

The Austrians twice came from behind to cancel out an Aleksandar Mitrovic double but were undone by a 74th-minute volley by Tadic with his weaker right foot.

Roared on by their boisterous fans in Red Star’s stadium, Serbia drew first blood in the sixth minute when a delightful back-heel by Filip Kostic released Tadic and he squared the ball to Mitrovic for a simple finish.

A calamitous error by centre back Stefan Mitrovic gifted Marcel Sabitzer a 15th-minute equaliser, as the forward had all the time and space in the world to drill his shot past keeper Vladimir Stojkovic.

Mitrovic, who had not scored in a competitive match for Serbia since a 1-1 draw with Croatia in September 2013, restored the home side’s lead midway through the first half with a thumping header after Tadic’s inch-perfect cross.

Chances went begging at either end before more sloppy defending by the home side allowed Marc Janko to rip through the middle and beat Stojkovic.

Austria looked more likely to grab a winner but Tadic, who also scored one goal and set up the other two in Serbia’s 3-0 win in Moldova on Thursday, delighted the home fans.

The Southampton winger got on the end of a loose ball in the heart of the penalty area and drilled his shot past Ozcan, with Serbia’s supporters celebrating by lighting several flares.

Austria coach Marcel Koller heaped praise on Tadic while criticising his team’s performance.

“Tadic had an outstanding evening and without a doubt he decided the game,” he told a news conference.

“We weren’t compact enough in the first half and although we improved in the second, we didn’t do enough to get a better result.”

“We were up against a high-quality team and the good thing is that we are improving all the time,” he said.

Saints ace Dusan Tadic on the World Cup goal trail - again!

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic will return to Saints this week on a high after another international goal.

The Saints playmaker netted Serbia’s winner against Austria tonight to make it three goals in as many World Cup qualifiers.

He had previously scored in a 3-0 qualifying group win in Moldova last Thursday, and in a 2-2 draw against the Republic of Ireland last month.

Tadic is in hot scoring form for his country, having also scored in two friendlies last May against Cyprus and Israel.

Tonight’s goal was his 11th for his country in 41 internationals.

Shane Long ends 18-game goal drought in Irish World Cup success

Show/hide article…

The Saints striker opened the scoring in the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying victory in Moldova.

Long, belong, netted in only the second minute of his country’s 3-1 success.

After Moldova had levelled, James McLean sealed the Republic’s triumph with two goals in the space of seven second half minutes.

Long had entered the game having failed to score in his previous ten league and cup games for his club and in his last eight appearances for his country.

Long’s last goal for Saints came in the 4-2 home win over Manchester City on May 1, and his last goal for Ireland was against Holland in a pre-Euro 2016 friendly the same month.
