Benali’s Big Race, day 7: Howay the Benalis!

Show/hide article…

FRANNY Benali was greeted by former Saints teammate Neil Maddison when he completed his tour of the north east today.

The Saints legend was welcomed to Newcastle United by Cancer Research UK staff at lunchtime before beginning the journey south.

Former Sunderland star Kevin Ball, the Black Cats’ former player and development coach, met him at the Stadium of Light.

Then Maddison, who made 169 appearances for Saints before returning to his native north-east to join Middlesbrough in 1997, was reunited with Benali at the Riverside Stadium late this afternoon.

Maddison said: you’ve got to take your hat off to this guy. Franny was always fit, we always called him a lean machine but to do what he’s doing … he’s an inspiration to everybody."

Meanwhile, Franny has lost two members of his support team for three days of his Big Race – so they can do their own challenge for a cancer charity.

Until now, Franny’s children, Luke and Kenzie have been at their dad’s side for every day of his epic challenges for Cancer Research UK.

But they have headed south to do a skydive for The Wessex Haven in Salisbury tomorrow to celebrate the charity’s first anniversary as part of Breast Cancer awareness month.

The Benali siblings have already raised more than £2,500 and you can sponsor them on their justgiving page.

Mum Karen said: “This was planned five months ago, before the Big Race was put back to October.

“Luke and Kenzie are gutted and quite emotional to be leaving but we’re so proud that they’re doing their bit to beat cancer.

“They’re so keen to rejoin Franny that they’ll leave at 3am on Tuesday morning to join us in the east midlands for our 7am start.”

Franny is due to arrive at Hull City at 3.30 pm tomorrow afternoon, a week since departing from AFC Bournemouth - and a week before his scheduled arrival at St Mary’s.

“When we arrive at Hull on Sunday afternoon it will be a huge psychological boost because at that point we will be halfway,” said Karen.

Strength in numbers: Which Premier League stadium has the highest average attendance?

Show/hide article…

West Ham haven’t enjoyed the best start to the season as Slaven Bilic’s side are counting five losses and only one win in seven Premier League matches.

However, they so far have one of the five best average attendances in the league at their new London Stadium home.

Tottenham’s stunning run from last season continues as Mauricio Pochettino’s side is now sitting in second place, just one point behind Manchester City.

But when it comes to attendance Spurs are not even making the top 10.

Ward-Prowse enjoying busy schedule

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse says he is enjoying the number of games Southampton are involved in this season across all competitions.

Confidence drawn from an unbeaten run spanning six games, with the majority of the squad tasting action in that time, is clear to see.

And despite an unrelenting schedule, Ward-Prowse, who helped England Under-21s to qualification with a 1-0 over Kazakhstan, says games coming thick and fast is a help rather than a hindrance when you have gathered momentum.

He said: “The run has given us a lot of confidence. There has been a lot of squad rotation and everyone has come in and done really well, so there are a lot of positive signs and hopefully we can carry on this momentum.

“Mentally it is positive because you are eager for the next game. It is going to be a tough few games coming up with some long trips, so I think these wins can obviously help that as well.

“It is obviously a bit of a different season with the volume of games so there are a lot of changes but the detail we have been working to has been very important.

“This is the perks of being an international player.”

Ward-Prowse netted his first goal from open play in the emphatic win over West Ham United at London Stadium, something which he is hoping to add to his game as the campaign progresses.

He added: “It was nice to finally get it. I’ve had a bit of stick from a few of the members of staff and the lads but it was great to get that first goal from open play and hopefully I can add a few more to my game.”
