‘Football has made a huge difference to my self-confidence and belief that I can achieve something with a disability,’ says Martin Sinclair

Show/hide article…

Martin Sinclair’s first experience of organised football remains etched on his mind. He was seven. Sports mad, but he had spent much of his life in and out of hospital after being born with cerebral palsy. His mum searched for somewhere to play and, eventually, just took him along to a session with able-bodied children. “When I walked in, no one knew what to do – no one knew what cerebral palsy was,” he says. Undeterred, Martin followed his dream amid further serious medical issues that included a hip replacement, and being in a wheelchair for more than three years, to represent Team GB at the 2012 Paralympics.

Now, with the help of funding from the new Premier League/BT Sport disability scheme, he is hoping to inspire a pan-disability league among leading clubs to work alongside the league he has helped launch in his local area. Martin, who is the elder brother of Celtic winger Scott Sinclair, currently works as an ambassador for the Saints Foundation at Southampton.

Saints legend and his wife bag £30,000 for charity on gameshow

Show/hide article…

SOUTHAMPTON football legend, Matt Le Tissier and his and wife won £30,000 for charity.

The former attacking midfielder and his wife Angela appeared yesterday on ITV quiz show Mr and Mrs.

Matt and Angela answered a series of questions about their significant other, in hopes to win the jackpot for their chosen charity, Hampshire hospice - Naomi House & Jacksplace.

Although known for his exploits on the pitch, Le Tissier is no stranger to game shows.

Last year he scored a hat-trick of wins on Countdown and left with high praise from presenters Nick Hewer and Rachel Riley.

Le Tissier and Angela met in a night club in Southampton in 1996 and have been married for eight years.

He said: “There was a very strong instant connection.

“There were no mobile phones in those days,

“I knew her name and that she was a Southampton Football club season ticket holder.

“So I went to the office, wrote a note and left it on her seat for her to find when she came to the next home game.

“The note definitely worked, because she’s been my wife now for eight years,” explained the Saints hero.

The besotted couple got question after question right, sending them into the final, with the ability to win the huge jackpot.

“I’ve never met anyone else that I would want to spend the rest of my living day’s with” said the former Southampton football club captain.

Wife Angela echoed: “I love Matthew so much. He is my world. He is an amazing father and my best friend."

The £30,000 question was “Which celebrity was Angela’s childhood crush?”

To which Matt replied, through gritted teeth ‘Micky Adams’, his former Saints team mate.

Show/hide article…

Seven rounds of fixtures have been played, with Manchester City leading the table at this early stage.

The likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool are all hot on their heels, however.

At the other end of the table, Sunderland, Stoke and West Ham have all had awful starts to the season and are sitting in the relegation zone.

And, as league football is put on hold for the international break, talkSPORT’s super computer has worked out how the final 2016/17 table could look.

Premier League crosses: Ranking all 20 clubs’ total deliveries so far in 2016/17

Show/hide article…

Football is a simple game. So why overcomplicate it?

Crossing balls into the box is one of the most direct of threats in order to get a goal. But with the highly encouraged variety of passing games in the Premier League, is crossing a dying art? Not according to these statistics.

While target men are becoming less common in a side’s forward line, these figures show clubs are still gambling by sending balls into the 18-yard box, rather than constantly trying to run the ball in.

talkSPORT has taken a look at the numbers so far in 2016/17 and it is interesting to see the order of teams in the crossing table after just seven games.

Mid-table is close, but more than 100 crosses separate the bottom side from the current top crossers, who have been averaging 28.29 deliveries per game.

So, who is currently leading the way? Click the right arrow, above, starting from lowest to highest. Would you like to see your team cross more frequently? Comment with your thoughts, below…

Yoshida’s Japan seal dramatic win

Show/hide article…

The FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifier looked as though it would end level, but Vahid Halilhodzic’s side won it in stoppage time, as Hotaru Yamaguchi found the net.

Yoshida and Japan had taken the lead with 25 minutes gone, as Genki Haraguchi converted, but the visitors levelled on the hour mark through Saad Natiq Naji.

Japan pressed for a winner and it eventually arrived late in the game, as Yamaguchi, a second half substitute, found the back of the net.

Yoshida and Japan will be back in action on Tuesday morning, when they face Australia at 10am BST.
