Puel: We’ll do everything to be fresh

Show/hide article…

It’s a difficult run-up to facing the Premier League champions for Saints, as they make the long journey home from Israel after drawing 0-0 with Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Puel left behind some first-team regulars in anticipation of this weekend’s trip to King Power Stadium, and he is hopeful that will help mitigate against any tiredness the other players might be feeling.

“We will see our possibilities,” the Saints boss said. "We do everything possible to give the players a good recovery.

"Some fresh players stayed at home, like Austin, Fonte, Bertrand and Davis. I think it was important to do this, but the other players come back after a long travel and the difficulties of that, without a proper recovery between the two games. This is very hard.

"In the same time, for example, Leicester will be without a game for five days.

"For us, it will be important to stay with a good spirit, a good attitude and a good organisation.

“It is an exciting game I think, with a very good team. Perhaps we are a little tired, but I think on the pitch all my players will give all the possibilities I hope with good football and with a good result at the final whistle.”

Tadić confident ahead of Leicester trip

Show/hide article…

Saints visit the defending Premier League champions at King Power Stadium on the back of five games unbeaten and five clean sheets in a row.

“We have a lot of confidence, because we get good results in the last couple of games,” Tadić said.

“It will be a really important game and we know it will be a really hard game. They are champions of England, they have a really strong team and it will be an interesting game.”

Saints failed to beat the Foxes last season, letting a two-goal lead at home slip in a 2-2 draw, while they lost a tight game 1-0 away towards the end of the campaign.

Tadić felt they should have triumphed at least once against the eventual title winners.

“At home, yes. Away, it was a normal game that can go either way, but I think at home when we played them we should have beaten them,” he said.

Having beaten West Ham 3-0 in their last Premier League away game, Tadić is hopeful that a repeat performance will yield more points this weekend.

“Especially the second half I think we played good and I think we should show that again,” he said.

“It will be a really nice game to watch and we will see what happens.”

When is Leicester City vs Southampton, is it on TV and what will Jamie Vardy drink before the game?

Show/hide article…

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has challenged Jamie Vardy to prove his curious pre-match drinking ritual still works by ending his goal drought against Southampton on Sunday.

Vardy revealed in his new autobiography that he superstitiously drank a glass of port out of a Lucozade bottle the night before every match last season.

The England international striker’s unusual habit worked a treat as he left opposing defenders punch drunk en route to scoring 24 times in Leicester’s incredible Premier League title triumph.

Harry Redknapp dismisses Daily Telegraph betting claims as ‘nonsense’

Show/hide article…

Harry Redknapp has dismissed allegations that his players gambled on the result of a game, after being filmed by undercover reporters at the Daily Telegraph saying that they had.

Redknapp, a former manager of Portsmouth, Southampton, QPR and Tottenham among others, is the latest manager to be filmed in the newspaper’s series of investigative reports on corruption in football, the first of which led to the sacking of England manager Sam Allardyce earlier this week, but hit out at the allegations on Saturday.

“It’s a nonsense. If that’s the best they could get out of three hours of sitting with me and trying to stitch me up, it’s sad,” he told BT Sport. "The worst part is that when the bill came up, the other four scumbags got up and left me with the bill.

“They [the players] never had a bet anyway. No-one had a bet. Impossible. Anyone who’s watching this who understands betting odds knows that a team on the top playing a team that’s relegated, it’s not a betting proposition. You can’t bet on that. It’s ridiculous.”

Football Association rules prohibit players from gambling on games in which they play, while managers must report any knowledge of betting to the governing body. The Telegraph, citing legal reasons, did not reveal which game, teams, or players were involved in the gambling.

Redknapp said he only learned of his players’ gambling after the game, which his side won, but the Telegraph reported that he did not report any misconduct to the FA.

The FA has now said it will investigate all the allegations made once it has received the newspaper’s full evidence file.

Redknapp is shown saying in a video that the opposition “murdered us early on,” and adding: "At half-time I took [a player] off and put, erm, [another player on] and they’re all looking at me, all the lads, ‘cause I didn’t know they’d had a bet, ‘cause they was [sic] all choked, they’d all had a spread bet and everything.’’

Football agent Dax Price, who was also present in the Telegraph’s film, said players from both teams were betting on the result, with one player having as much as “20 grand” on the line.

When contacted later by the newspaper, and told that betting by players was against the rules, Redknapp reportedly replied: “Oh would it? Oh, okay. But not at that time I don’t think it was, was it? They weren’t betting on the other team, they were having a bet on their own team.”

Asked about his remarks about the players gambling on the game, the Telegraph claims he told the newspaper: “Unbeknownst to me. No, not a spread bet. It wasn’t a spread bet. I think they had a bet on the game, but it wasn’t, that was nothing to do with me … after the game I’d heard the rumour the lads had had a bet that day … I’m not in control of whether they go and have a bet or not.”

Information from Press Association was used in this report.

Virgil van Dijk to ‘respect the champions’ at King Power Stadium

Show/hide article…

Defender Virgil van Dijk says Southampton will offer champions Leicester every respect on Sunday, but can be confident of stepping up to the challenge as they chase a third straight Premier League win.

Southampton battled to a goalless draw away at Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday evening, which extended their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions.

Juggling the demands of a gruelling Europa League and domestic schedule will test the resolve of Claude Puel’s squad following what will be a fourth match in the space of 12 days.

Dutchman van Dijk, though, believes the way the group coped without the likes of captain Jose Fonte, top scorer Charlie Austin, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis for the trip to Israel shows there is a collective strength in depth to move forwards.

‘It is going to be a great game, we are looking forward to it and it’s another challenge for everyone, and everyone is focused and ready,’ said van Dijk, quoted on the club’s official website, www.southamptonfc.com.

‘We can beat anyone in the league, but it still needs hard work and us sticking together.’

The centre-back added: 'We have to respect the champions, and they won in the Champions League this week, so they are full of confidence as well.

'Hopefully we can keep this run going, then Sunday is going to be a massive game again - a great opponent, and I am going to be ready for it.

‘We have a good run going at the moment and hopefully we can continue that for the weekend as well.’

Puel accepts recovery will be key, with the squad having flown back to England on Thursday afternoon.

‘It is difficult. You just finish the game and now our mind is for the next game and it arrives very quickly,’ said the Saints boss, who took over in the summer following Ronald Koeman’s departure.

'It is very hard to do a good recovery after this game, after a long journey.

'I don’t know what will be our condition, but for the mind, for the confidence this result was important, we have a good spirit and a lot of solidarity between the players.

'Now we go to Leicester for a good result.

‘Leicester will be two days more of recovery on the week (than us) and this is too big, but we go to make something.’
