Premier League predictions: our writers give their verdict on the weekend fixtures

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are looking to make it four straight Premier League victories against a Swansea City side who sit just above the relegation places.

But despite admitting he is possibly one poor result from being sacked, manager Francesco Guidolin has been encouraged by the Swans’ improved performances in back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and they should offer resistance in a fixture they won 3-1 in May.

Stat Pack: Leicester vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Take a look at the key statistics ahead of Saints visit to reigning champions Leicester City on Sunday at the King Power Stadium.

Since his debut in August 2014, Charlie Austin has scored as many Premier League goals as Wayne Rooney (21) but in 20 fewer games.

Islam Slimani has scored three times in his first four games for Leicester, all of which have been headers.

Saints head to the King Power Stadium in search of their fifth successive clean sheet. Their last top-flight clean sheet at Leicester came in a 4-0 win in December 2001.

Southampton have gone three hours without conceding in the Premier League.

Charlie Austin will be trying to score in three successive Premier League appearances for the first time since Boxing Day 2014.

The Foxes’ haul of seven home Premier League wins against Southampton is their most against an opponent in the competition.

Leicester have lost three of their six Premier League games this season (W2 D1), as many as they lost in their previous 42 in the competition (W26 D13).

Southampton have won one of their seven league trips to the King Power Stadium, claiming a 2-1 victory in December 2007.

Ex Saints boss Harry Redknapp named in newspaper investigation into football

Show/hide article…

Former Saints boss Harry Redknapp has today been named in the latest newspaper investigation into football.

Reports in the Daily Telegraph today allege that Redknapp claimed that players at a team he managed gambled on the result of one of their matches.

Betting on football by current professional players in England is prohibited by the FA, with a worldwide ban on doing so enforced since August 2014.

Redknapp says he was unaware at the time that his players were betting on the outcome of the match and denies any wrongdoing.

The paper does not suggest that Redknapp knew the players were betting at the time of the match.

Redknapp managed Saints from 2004 to 2005 and has also managed West Ham, Portsmouth, Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers.

Undercover reporters filmed Redknapp without his knowledge as part of an investigation into British football.

The article does not identify the match or players in question, or the year in which the fixture occurred.

The newspaper claims Redknapp’s team were odds against to win a match but secured a comfortable victory.

The report comes just a day after Saints assistant coach Eric Black found himself caught up in the newspaper investigation.

The former Aberdeen striker was captured on video at a New Forest hotel talking to an undercover reporter purporting to be a representative of a Far East firm looking to invest in English football.

The meeting was arranged by Scott McGarvey, the football agent who also teed-up Sam Allardyce’s now ill-fated meeting with Daily Telegraph undercover reporters which cost him his job as England manager.

Mr McGarvey is a good friend of Mr Black’s from their days in Scotland together.

The video appeared to show Mr Black and Mr McGarvey discussing managers and coaches in the lower leagues and how they could possibly be persuaded to identify players who could be signed up on management contracts.

Ranieri looking forward to “big game”

Show/hide article…

The Foxes, who beat FC Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night, welcome Saints to King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

Ranieri’s side, who famously won the title last season, have yet to find any real momentum domestically, but have impressed in Europe, and the Italian has called on his team to find consistency at home ahead of facing Saints.

“I’m looking forward to a big match against Southampton,” Ranieri told reporters ahead of Sunday’s meeting.

“I watched them on Thursday night and they played very well. They are playing well and they are confident.

“They move the ball well and are doing a very good job. For us, it’s important to show the same concentration levels. There is no magic formula.

“In the Premier League we have played so-so. In the Champions League we have been good, but I want consistency.”

Saints travelled back from their UEFA Europa League clash with Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel on Friday, but Ranieri doesn’t believe that will give the Foxes an advantage this weekend.

We played Manchester United and after two days we played Porto,” Ranieri added. “It’s the same for them this time.

“I watched the Puel system. They changed a lot of players, and they will change four or five players on Sunday and they will be fresh.”

Van Dijk looks to Leicester

Show/hide article…

Saints have now kept a clean sheet in each of their last five matches, winning the first four of those, before a 0-0 draw away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League last night.

Van Dijk now wants to maintain that, as the side heads to King Power Stadium this weekend, and says the record is something for the whole team to take credit for.

“The defenders are not defending by themselves,” said the centre-half.

"I think it starts up front and everybody can be proud of themselves, and hopefully we can keep this run going, then Sunday is going to be a massive game again – a great opponent, and I’m going to be ready for it, so I’m looking forward to it already.

“We have a good run going at the moment and hopefully we can continue that for the weekend as well.”

Saints drew 2-2 with Leicester at home last season, before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat away, and van Dijk is expecting another well-contested clash this time around.

“We have to respect the champions, and they won in the Champions League this week, so they’re full of confidence as well,” he said.

“It’s going to be a great game, we’re looking forward to it and it’s another challenge for everyone, and everyone is focused and ready. We can beat anyone in the league, but it still needs hard work and us sticking together.”
