Ex-Saints boss Pardew: Managing England is the ‘pinnacle’

Show/hide article…

Alan Pardew believes managing England in the “pinnacle for any Englishman’s career” - but insists he is happy at Crystal Palace and remains entirely focused on his job at Selhurst Park.

The 55-year-old former Saints manager is one of the names linked to the vacant role as England boss after Sam Allardyce left the job after just 67 days and one game in charge.

Allardyce’s short reign came to an end after his contract was terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday after he was secretly filmed by the Daily Telegraph making a series of controversial comments.

Pardew, who has been at Palace since January 2015, said he was “proud” to be in the select group being touted as Allardyce’s possible replacement but will be focusing purely on his current position.

"(Bournemouth manager) Eddie Howe said this morning it was the pinnacle for any Englishman’s career, I agree with that.

"I’m so lucky to have this football club where it is right now, the chairman and I have a great relationship. They have shown me great faith and I have a team I have a good feeling about. This football club at this time is where I want to be.

“It holds a special place for me as I played here, that is where my focus is entirely right now.”

Gareth Southgate has been named as Allardyce’s replacement on a temporary basis and will take charge for the next four England games.

The former Middlesbrough boss played alongside Pardew during their time together at Palace and has been backed by his ex-team-mate to do well in the role.

“They have a good manager in charge in Gareth, he has been through the system and knows the players coming through,” Pardew said of the man who steps up from the England Under-21 position.

“I have respect for him as a player, I played with him, and as a coach and a manager - he has a bit of an X-factor about him. He has four games guaranteed, I think he will do well and I hope he does.”

As well as Pardew and Howe, the likes of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and former Hull boss Steve Bruce have been linked with the national team vacancy.

“Of course I’m privileged and proud to be in that small group that is going to be linked with it, that I’m not going to shy away from,” Pardew added.

"The other part is the focus I have to do here and return their loyalty to me, that won’t shake, I won’t let that happen to me.

Transfer ALERT! Premier League clubs in five-way fight to sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko

Show/hide article…

Leicester, Stoke and West Brom have joined both Manchester United and Southampton in the race to land Tiemoue Bakayoko.

As talkSPORT told you this week, United and Saints have been linked with a move for the Monaco midfielder.

And, according to reports in France, a further three Premier League clubs are interested in landing Bakayoko.

The 22-year-old Parisien has made 36 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco since arriving in 2014 and is also a target for AC Milan and Juventus.

However, Boli insists his client is not in the hunt for a new club.

“Juventus saw him play three times this summer,” Boli told Get French Football last month.

"There’s also interest from Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City.

“Leicester City contacted us very recently. Tiemoue’s priority is to stay at Monaco.”

Show/hide article…

Speaking ahead of the team’s UEFA Europa League game against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, the midfielder has given an insight into the team’s ambitions and how the supporters are helping to drive them on.

“It’s always nice to win a trophy,” said Romeu, who was with Chelsea when they won the Champions League and Europa League.

"I think the supporters from Southampton also deserve something nice and we would like to give it to them.

“We have a very strong squad and we are here to win things. The squad is very competitive, we all want to get something big and we are working for it.”

Romeu added: "As you go forward, every game is nice, and playing quarter-finals and semi-finals I think it’s all watched around Europe and even the world and we all want to be there.

"Who wouldn’t want to win the Europa League? It’s a long run, it’s very hard, but we’re here to give everything in every game.

“We want to go further and go as long as we can and we will do everything to do that.”

Celtic fined for ‘illicit’ banner during tie against Saints’ Europa League rivals Hapoel Be’er Sheva

Show/hide article…

Celtic have been fined 10,000 euros (£8,616) by UEFA after fans displayed an “illicit banner” during their recent Champions League qualifier against Saints’ Europa League opponents Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Fans flew Palestine flags before and during the match against Israeli opposition at Parkhead on August 17, drawing a charge from European football’s governing body.

UEFA viewed the flags as illicit banners under article 16 of its disciplinary regulations and at a disciplinary hearing the complaint against the Scottish champions was upheld and the club was fined.

The UEFA rule in question forbids the use of ‘‘gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature’’.

Celtic have been punished eight times in five seasons by UEFA for supporter misconduct and the sanction on each occasion has been a fine from the governing body.

They were fined around £16,000 two years ago after a Palestine flag was displayed at a Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik.

Last month, some fans of the club launched an online campaign in a bid to raise funds for Palestinian charities, with the aim of matching the fine imposed by UEFA. The fundraiser has since collected in excess of £100,000 in donations.

Saints trio named in England under-21 squad for final Euro qualifiers

Show/hide article…

THERE are three Saints players in the England Under-21s squad to face Kazakhstan and Bosnia & Herzegovina in their final two Euro Qualifiers next month.

Following the appointment of regular U21s head coach Gareth Southgate as interim senior team manager earlier this week, U20s boss Aidy Boothroyd will be taking charge for the trip to Aktobe next Thursday and then the game with Bosnia in Walsall on Tuesday 11 October.

Boothroyd has named a 22-man squad for the double-header, with England knowing that a result from either of the two games will be enough to see them qualify for next summer’s Euro Finals in Poland.

Saints trio James Ward-Prowse, who was Southgate’s captain, Nathan Redmond and Matt Targett have all been named in the squad.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has been left out, fuelling speculation he will be named in Southgate’s first England senior squad this weekend.

SQUAD Goalkeepers: Jonathan Mitchell (Derby County), Jordan Pickford (Sunderland), Freddie Woodman (Newcastle United) Defenders: Calum Chambers (Middlesbrough, loan from Arsenal), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Brendan Galloway (West Bromwich Albion, loan from Everton), Rob Holding (Arsenal), Mason Holgate (Everton), Dominic Iorfa (Wolves), Matt Targett (Southampton) Midfielders: Lewis Baker (Vitesse Arnhem, loan from Chelsea), Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), Isaac Hayden (Newcastle United), Will Hughes (Derby County), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), John Swift (Reading), James Ward-Prowse (Saints) Forwards: Tammy Abraham (Bristol City, loan from Chelsea), Demarai Gray (Leicester City), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Nathan Redmond (Southampton), Duncan Watmore (Sunderland)
