Saints chairman Ralph Krueger calling for tighter regulation of player transfers

Show/hide article…

SAINTS chairman Ralph Krueger has revealed his dismay at the current allegations of corruption in English football - and is calling for tighter regulation of player transfers.

The 57-year-old Canadian said this week’s reports in the Daily Telegraph alleging a culture of illicit payments between agents and managers had “shocked” and “upset” the Saints board.

But Krueger, speaking exclusively to ESPN, said the Premier League club’s recent success has been built on “honest and open” values and he now hoped that the rest of football would follow suit.

“We’ve been a club that’s been driving, wanting to get control of the evolving agent world around us and we believe we’re going to have ears now,” said Krueger, a former ice hockey player who went on to coach Switzerland and the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers.

"We’re going to use this, for sure, as a club, to fight for change and to fight for more regulation.

“We are all for regulation, and we are one of the most disciplined clubs in English football in terms of the way we deal with agents and youth academy players.”

Krueger is currently on a month’s sabbatical while he coaches Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey in Canada but said pushing for changes to the transfer system would be “absolutely top of the agenda” when he returns to England next week.

The Telegraph’s undercover investigation has already forced Sam Allardyce to step down as England manager following indiscreet remarks he made about the Football Association’s transfer rules and his predecessor Roy Hodgson.

And there are now wide calls for an independent inquiry into the allegations that 10 unnamed managers who have worked in England’s top two divisions have taken bribes, as well as further claims of conflicts of interest and corruption against Leeds owner Massimo Cellino, QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Barnsley assistant manager Tommy Wright.

All those who have been named by the newspaper so far have denied any wrongdoing.

Puel: We must stay focused

Show/hide article…

Saints head into the Europa League clash in Israel in tremendous form and they will be hoping to gain complete control of Group K when the teams meet at Turner Stadium.

Yet Puel is wary of the threat that their opponents could pose them.

“I think it’s a good team with good technical players,” he said.

"They play good football and they beat Inter Milan in their first game. This is not a surprise when you see their game, because they created many chances at the beginning of the game to score.

“They are a team you need to be careful with, because with their fans behind them they will be difficult, but it is a good challenge.”

Puel added: "Every time it’s another game and it’s important to stay with good humility, a good spirit and a good attitude, as all the games are difficult.

“This game will be the same, with a good opponent and it will be important for us to play good football and to have many chances to score and to take a good result here.”

Saints warned Hapoel have ‘the two best foreigners’ in the Israeli League

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have been warned to watch out for two Nigerians tonight in Israel.

According to local journalist Dani Porat, midfielder John Ugo and striker Toni Nawakeme were the “best two foreigners in the Israeli League last season.”

In their shock 2-0 win at Inter Milan earlier this month, boss Barak Bachar fielded six foreigners.

It was the first time he had done this, as Israeli League rules state you can only play five foreigners in domestic league fixtures.

Defender Migel Vitor, who opened the scoring at the San Siro, is another foreign signing – the Portuguese arrived in the summer just gone from Greek club PAOK.

Bachar doesn’t just rely on foreign talent, however.

Greatest midfielders Maor Buzaglo, a free-kick specialist, and Maor Melikson who, says Porat, “are known as two of the greatest midfielders in Israel”, though the latter is injury prone.

Captain Elyaniv Barda, who has won almost 40 caps for Israel, is another major name.

He returned to his native country in 2013 to sign for Hapoel after six successful seasons in Belgium with Genk.

Bachar, only 37, is known for his flexibility.

He can play with three centre halves, as he did in the Champions League qualifier against Glasgow Celtic and the Europa League triumph in the San Siro.

Alternatively, he can play 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

“He likes to play forward. Be’er Sheva under him is a very aggressive and physical team.

“That is the reason they made great results in Europe this campaign. They beat Olympiacos and Inter, and almost qualified for the Champions League.

“They are a very versatile team that does not rely on one player.

“Barda was very dominant last year, but injured this year and hasn’t played much.

“Melikson is very fragile and injured a lot and in the last couple of games Buzaglo has been the leader in the field.

“They have many players who can score goals and not [just] one leader.”
