Charlie Nicholas’ predictions: Man Utd to run riot in Europa League

Show/hide article…

Charlie Nicholas provides us with his Europa League predictions as Manchester United and Southampton look to avoid upsets.

Both Premier League sides are favourites to secure three points on Thursday night as they face two of Europe’s lesser known outfits, Zorya Luhansk and Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Here’s what Charlie is predicting for the two clashes and his Sky Bet tips…

There will be a few changes, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic one of those likely to be missing and I think Marcus Rashford will also get a rest after establishing himself as a first-team starter.

That means Wayne Rooney should get another chance in the No 10 position, with Anthony Martial and Michael Carrick coming in as well, along with a couple of other players looking to prove a point.

Rooney won’t be happy about losing his place but that adds the competitive edge to this side, with a quality set of players knowing they’ve got to do something to knock the likes of Rashford and Juan Mata back out of the side.

It was an impressive victory over Leicester at the weekend and I can’t see anything other than another convincing win, so what I quite fancy is five plus goals at 6/1 and Martial hat-trick at 28/1.

Charlie predicts: 5-0 and Martial to score first - (50/1 with Sky Bet)

This won’t be an easy game for the Saints, as the Israeli side are strong at home. They battered Celtic at the Turner Stadium and should’ve put them out of the competition.

Southampton have improved and there’s a nice bit of momentum, but I think Claude Puel will make a few changes.

I’d be tempted to give Charlie Austin another 60-65 minutes because when you’re feeling good about yourself, especially after so many injuries, you just want to keep going.

Shane Long should get a chance to play alongside Austin and give Dusan Tadic a rest, with Jay Rodriguez the other one who will be looking to come in for Nathan Redmond.

The big threat for Southampton is Hapoel’s striker Ben Sahar. Anthony Nwakaeme is the other really dangerous one as he is strong and quick and will get at them. This is a dangerous game and I think it will be a draw.

Charlie predicts: 1-1 and Sahar to score first (33/1 with Sky Bet)

Southampton aiming to win battle of the female owners

Show/hide article…

History will be made in Israel when two clubs owned by women come face to face in European competition.

Southampton’s Katharina Liebherr and Alona Barkat of Hapoel Be’er Sheva have both overseen huge progress at their clubs, culminating in this Europa League clash.

Liebherr took charge of Southampton in 2014 and led the club to their highest Premier League finish of sixth last season despite selling a swathe of key players.

Liebherr is notoriously private but in the foreword to the book Match of the New Millennium charting Southampton’s rise, she wrote: ‘I am very proud of how the club have developed and that we are now facing a positive future makes me even prouder.

‘Not only will we continue to fight to be among the top teams in the Premier League but we will also do everything to be successful in the Europa League.’

They will face a tough test against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who won their first Group K game 2-0 at Inter Milan.

Barkat bought the club for £1.38million in 2007. Under her ownership they were promoted to the top flight and last season completed a Leicester-style title win, their first since 1976.

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger ‘shocked’ by corruption in England

Show/hide article…

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger has told ESPN in an exclusive interview that he is shocked by revelations of corruption in English football.

Krueger, also the head coach of Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey, revealed his dismay at the Daily Telegraph’s investigations which led to Sam Allardyce’s exit from the national team job and also claimed that eight managers who have worked in the Premier League had accepted bungs.

“I have to tell you, really, absolutely shocked and shuddered,” he told ESPN. "Our whole board is shocked and upset by it. Multiple messages through the day yesterday and this morning. We’ve been a club that’s been driving, wanting to get control of the evolving agent world around us and we believe we’re going to have ears now.

“Southampton is built on a completely honest and open culture and on values. The reason I took the job was the unbelievable value structure and foundation of our owner, Katharina Liebherr… That’s why I embraced this, was to be able to lead and be the de facto owner of an organization where it was driven by culture. So we’re extremely upset by this.”

Krueger insisted that Southampton would lead the way to ensure that the Premier League would tighten regulations in an effort to curb such things in the future.

“We see it as a shocking evolution that – I wouldn’t say we’re so naive to believe that this didn’t exist, but we did think it wasn’t part of our English football culture,” he added.

"We’re going to use this, for sure, as a club, to fight for change and to fight for more regulation. We are all for regulation, and we are one of the most disciplined clubs in English football in terms of the way we deal with agents and youth academy players.

“Staying within the rules is something we really – everything we do is based on that. We will react for sure. It’s going to become a major thing for me when I get back. Absolutely top of the agenda.”

Claude Puel to make numerous changes to Southampton’s Europa League line-up

Show/hide article…

A football player is really not happy after being given a red card and has punch-up with referee.

Puel has made no fewer than THIRTY changes to his Southampton line-up in his last four games – resulting in four straight wins, with hotshot Austin netting five times in those matches.

And with a trip to champions Leicester on Sunday, the Frenchman has decided not to risk his big names at Israel champions Hapoel Be’er Sheva tonight.

Puel said: “Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis are staying at home.

“The players are staying because with the travel many players won’t have enough time to recover for Leicester.

“We have got to play against Leicester on Sunday, which is just two days training after this game. Leicester have five days to recover.

Premier League midfielder: This is why my medals with Chelsea are tainted

Show/hide article…

The midfielder was on the bench for the Blues’ dramatic Champions League triumph and injured for their Europa League win. He got medals for both but not being on the pitch meant there was a slightly hollow feeling. But now he’s looking to do it from the front with Southampton as they take on Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League tomorrow night.

“I had the medal because I was in the squad, but I didn’t play” Romeu explained: "I remember the Champions League final with Chelsea, I was on the bench, and we won, but I didn’t play in the semi-final, didn’t play the final. "You feel part of it, and you feel proud of yourself and your team-mates, but in your mind it’s ‘I want to win it one day being there, being on the pitch’. "(In 2012/13) I played the last game in the Champions League in the group stage, then I got the ‘ACL’ and couldn’t play in the Europa League.

"I had the medal because I was in the squad, but I didn’t play. "As you go forward, every game is nicer, playing quarter-finals, semi-finals, it’s all watched around Europe and the world, and we all want to be there. “Who wouldn’t want to win the Europa League? It’s a long run, it’s very hard, but we’re here to give everything every game.”

COMMENT: This is a real European adventure

Show/hide article…

European football is meant to be an adventure, and Saints are kicking off their first away game of this season’s Europa League group stages with a complete culture change.

While the team will be largely cocooned in their own bubble, for the 300 fans expected to take on this trip, it is something totally different, writes ADAM LEITCH IN ISRAEL.

Milan and Prague are known entities and hold little fear or trepidation. They are popular city break destinations in comparatively nearby countries.

Israel is something else altogether.

The trip, which is about five hours by plane just from London to Tel Aviv without the additional travelling at either end, is the longest trek of this round of matches anywhere in the Europa League, and the logistics are as much an issue as anything else.

A few fans started their journey yesterday. More are heading out today.

One of the major concerns for travellers heading to the Middle East is security.

While nowhere can be guaranteed totally safe in this day and age, the Israeli’s clearly take this seriously, but is not overbearing, either entering the country, at the stadium prior to match time or out and about. Enough to feel secure but not intimidated.

Saints are doing their bit to help, with a small team of people having flown out specifically to support fans making the trip, the logistics and the ticketing arrangements to ensure it all goes smoothly.

Beersheba itself, the home of Hapoel Be’er Sheva, lies in the south of Israel.

It is effectively in a desert, though the drive down from Tel Aviv is not as barren as you might expect.

Though the wider area around it has a population of 200,000, that is spread over a fairly sprawling footprint. As an aside it proudly blasts of having more chess grandmasters per capita than any other city in the world.

It is easy to see why it is not on the tourist map, with its somewhat isolated location likely to put off most travellers, even though on first impressions it seems a reasonable enough area.

Indeed, as odd as it may sound, the very vast majority of Saints fans won’t see it.

The Turner Stadium where Be’er Sheva play their home games – a modern ground opened just a year ago that seats 16,000 and feels very nice and comfortable rather than intimidating, in daylight at least, sits on the northern outskirts of what would be considered the centre of the city. You come to it pretty much straight off the main road.

As there is little demand on a tourism front, there is virtually nowhere to stay in the city.

Just a couple of accommodation options sit within the area’s boundaries, and with one of those largely commandeered by the team there really isn’t much choice.

As such, pretty much all Saints fans flying in for the game are staying in Tel Aviv, which is the nearest major airport for direct flights.

That is still around an hour and a half drive away, but the road down to Be’er Sheva is modern, and a fairly straightforward journey, albeit with a bit of fraught lane weaving from some locals proving a popular past time.

There are train services between the two cities, but timings in terms of the return trip after the match, which is an 8pm kick off local time due to the two hour time difference, means most have forgone that option.

Instead most will rely on the football club, who have laid on free return coaches to all fans, leaving Tel Aviv in the afternoon and dropping fans off directly outside their entrance to the stadium – Gate 9 - where they will be shown immediately into the ground.

With no alcohol on sale in the stadium it is likely to be a sober atmosphere.

However, it will be a nice setting for fans to visit.

There is nothing particularly intimidating about it, but security is likely to be visible tonight, and the presence of an exclusion zone for unauthorised cars around the ground shows that it is taken seriously.

Fans have been told to be expect police to be visible, but trouble is not expected with the security forces there to protect rather than cause any issues themselves, and a generally happy and helpful atmosphere from all involved in the build-up.

One very obvious difference to adjust to is the temperature.

The weather is stable at around 30c, and though the heat of the day will have tailed off for the team by the time they kick-off in the evening, it will still be a little more draining than usual.

However, the close proximity to good weather in England over recent weeks and months means it doesn’t feel as oppressive as you might imagine, and Saints trained at the Turner Stadium last night to acclimatise.

It is immediately obvious this trip is something very much out of the ordinary. An adventure in its own right.

It’s as much a part of what getting into the Europa League was all about as the trip to the San Siro.

Hapoel v Saints - clash of the female owners!

Show/hide article…

SHE is Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s equivalent of Saints owner Katharina Liebherr.

The daughter of former St Mary’s saviour Markus is the only female owner of a Premier League football club, writes SIMON CARTER.

Likewise in Israel, Alona Barkat stands alone in the traditionally male-dominated world of professional football.

Barkat is the owner of Saints’ second Europa League opponents Be’er Sheva.

She bought it with her own money.

Be’er Sheva were languishing in the Israeli second tier back in 2007 when Barkat purchased the club for $1.8 million.

Within two years, Hapoel were promoted to Ligat Ha’Al, the country’s premier league, going up against the big boys of Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa.

And last season, just seven years after buying the club, Barkat watched on as Hapoel were crowned Israeli League champions for the first time in 40 years.

And they did it with spending a lot less money on wages than Maccabi, managed by ex-Manchester United player Jordi Cruyff, had done in winning three successive top flight titles.

Hapoel’s long overdue title win was on the cards in a way, though - the club had been top flight runners-up two seasons earlier.

Regarding her gender, Barkat has told Israeli media: “To tell the truth, I don’t feel any difference in the way people relate to me. At first, it raised a few eyebrows, but now it seems natural to everyone. The fact that I’m a woman is no longer an issue… I’m judged by results.

“Since I was a girl, I’ve always been interested in ‘boys’ things’ like motor racing…. I also developed an interest in soccer.

“I had been involved in philanthropy and thought what better way to promote educational values and bring about social change than through soccer.”

In a politically volatile area, Barkat admits “there is no place for racism or intolerance in soccer.

“Our team has Jews, Arabs, foreign Christians, and we sign players according to merit, not their ethnic or religious background.”

While no Saints manager has been fired by Liebherr, who is not involved in decision making on a day to day basis, Barkat is far more of a hands-on owner.

Towards the end of 2014/15 she sacked Elisha Levy, who had been her manager for three seasons, after Hapoel finished third in the league.

The axing came a week before the cup final, denying Levy the honor of leading his team out before the showpiece match, which they lost 6-2 to Maccabi.

Back in 2010 she announced she would be selling the club after fans assaulted then-manager Guy Azuri. She later withdrew her threat.

In place of Levy, Barkat brought in Barak Bachar who had just led Hapoel Kiryat Shmona to runners-up spot - one place ahead of Hapoel.

He quickly brought in the likes of former Genk striker Elyaniv Barda and Chelsea striker Ben Sahar, imported players such as Nigerian John Ogu, and promoted homegrown talent like defender Ofir Davidzada.

Romeu ready for knockout move

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu believes Saints will be close to reaching the Europa League knockout stages after just two matches if they can get a win in Israel tonight.

Saints opened up their Group K account with a home win over Sparta Prague, while this evening’s opponents Hapoel Be’er Sheva stunned Inter Milan with victory in the San Siro, writes ADAM LEITCH IN ISRAEL.

Now Claude Puel’s men take on Hapoel at the Turner Stadium knowing victory would set them up nicely ahead of a double header against Inter and leave them with one foot in the knockout stages.

Romeu said: “We will be closer. Not over yet, but we will be closer. In the beginning it’s not going to be easy, but we’re feeling good, we’re coming in on a good run and I think we are able to do it.

“I think the first game was very important, and it’s always good to start with a win, but I think now with six points it would be even better.

“It would give us more confidence to keep going and to get through the next stage and we hope we can do it.

“I think after winning those two games, we will feel much better, but it’s all about the game.”

Romeu admits he didn’t know much about Hapoel previously but is now aware what to expect when the teams meet tonight.

“If someone hasn’t watched them or you don’t know them well, you might think it will be easy, but it won’t be,” he insisted.

“They are a strong team, they have done pretty well the last months, the last year and I think it’s going to be hard.

“They defend quite well and we need to be ready, we need to be careful with the turnover of the balls and hopefully we can get our good strike going and keep ourselves in a good way.

“I just know that they are a strong team. It’s not easy to go against Inter Milan and beat them at their great stadium.

“They are a good defensive team and we like to have the ball, we like to keep the ball, but we need to be ready for the counter attacks.

“In English football we are used to it, but they do these things very well and we will need to make sure the spaces behind our defence are well covered and when we lose the ball we are ready to get it back quick.”

Saints are in a fine run of form after four wins on the spin and confidence is high.

“We are feeling comfortable now, we are feeling much better,” admitted Romeu.

“The last results have been very good, not just results but also the way we played and did a lot of things. They were very positive and we have to keep doing the same.

“Obviously, one game or two games doesn’t change anything, you have to keep doing it every game. That’s football and that’s what we have to do tonight.”

Saints in no mood to settle in Israel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists that Saints are not content to settle for a draw in Israel tonight, even with Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s incredible home form.

The team from the south of Israel have not lost a home game since their new ground, the Turner Stadium, was opened almost exactly a year ago, writes ADAM LEITCH IN ISRAEL.

That remarkable run helped them to the title last season, and after beating Inter Milan in the San Siro in their first Group K clash, they come into tonight’s game full of confidence – but that does not deter Puel.

“Every time when you play a game, at home or away, it’s to try and take three points. Every time,” insisted the Saints boss, who left four key players at home but is otherwise only missing Jay Rodriguez and Sofiane Boufal.

“You cannot be thinking just perhaps a draw. It’s important every time for me, my players and my staff every time away and at home to look for three points and this is the same.”

“They win the first game of the Europa League at Inter with a very good game.

“When I saw this game it is not a surprise to beat Inter because they have all the best situation to score in this game and they make a very good game.

“It was important to consider and respect this team because it’s a very good team, good players, technical players, they make a good press and they change system every time inside the game.

“It will be difficult for us.”

Despite Hapoel being relatively unknown, Puel and his staff have done their homework, using the Inter Milan game as a good scouting opportunity.

“We prepare all the times with all the games meticulously,” he said.

“It’s important of course to know the opponent and always to keep our play and to play good football.

“We have the possibilities against every opponent and it will be the same against this team.

“It’s important to respect all the teams and Hapoel also but the most important for us is to play our game.”

Saints have had an exhausting schedule, getting up early yesterday to make the five hour flight and two hour coach drive down to Beersheba, before quickly dropping their bags at the hotel and going to the Turner Stadium for training and pre-match press activities.

Puel is hoping it doesn’t take its toll.

“It was a long travel, we just arrive for the training session.

“Normally we are tired, this is normal, but we have to make something without play and we have got to keep energy. It’s normal and it’s important too have situation in different conditions. This is ok.”
