Will Southgate’s promotion to England caretaker boss be good news for several Saints?

Show/hide article…

WILL Gareth Southgate’s elevation to the England caretaker manager post see more Saints promoted into the senior squad?

That is a question worth asking in the light of the current under-21 boss having been placed in charge of the senior side’s next four games in the wake of Sam Allardyce’s departure.

The ex-Middlesbrough manager has the chance to shape the England team heading into 2017.

Nathan Redmond has long been seen as the next player to step off the under-21 conveyor belt and into the senior squad and the Saints man is someone Southgate knows well.

Redmond scored an under-21 hat-trick during Southgate’s time in charge, against Wales at Swansea in 2015.

Saints team-mate Charlie Austin has five goals in his last four games, and could be worth a look at - especially as Harry Kane is currently out through injury.

Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse might also be given a senior chance.

Southgate knows the player well, and last season made him his England under-21 captain.

Southgate has also regularly selected Saints left back Matt Targett in 2016, though he is very unlikely to win a shock senior call ahead of Danny Rose, clubmate Ryan Bertrand or ex-Saint Luke Shaw.

Shaw is one of five Saints to have made their senior England debut since 2013 - the others being Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne.

In addition, Calum Chambers made his senior international debut not long after leaving Saints to join Arsenal in 2014.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte, Ryan Bertrand, Steven Davis and Charlie Austin have not travelled with Southampton for their Europa League match at Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

The quartet have been left at home to keep them fit for the Saints’ league fixture at Leicester on Sunday.

Southampton will be looking to extend their current winning run to five games in all competitions on Thursday.

“All the players are ready to play with good energy and for me that’s very important,” said manager Claude Puel.

"Some players stay at home, because with the travel they won’t recover.

“It’s important to also take the two games together, as a few days after we are playing again, so we have to manage all of the players.”

The Saints beat West Ham 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, continuing the successful run that began with the 3-0 home European win over Sparta Prague.

However, Hapoel have won all five of their matches at the new Turner Stadium this season.

They also beat Inter Milan in Italy in their opening Group K game.

Southampton have won only one of their last six European away matches.

However, midfielder Steven Davis says confidence is high ahead of Thursday’s match, which they follow with a trip to reigning Premier League champions Leicester City on Sunday.

“We worked so hard to get ourselves in the Europa League and we want to go and enjoy it now,” Davis told the Southampton official website.

“We’ve made a good start with the result against Sparta and it’s important we build on that again. We want to progress through the group stages and then carry on from there.”

Puel rests star names for Israel trip

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is confident he can get a positive result in Saints’ first Europa League group stage away tie despite leaving a host of his star names at home, writes ADAM LEITCH IN ISRAEL.

Goalscoring hero Charlie Austin, captain Jose Fonte, left back Ryan Bertrand and creative midfielder Steven Davis were all ordered to keep training at Staplewood as the rest of the squad made the five hour flight to Israel.

Puel wants to keep the four key men fresh and ready for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leicester, allowing him to bring some fresh blood in for the game at the King Power stadium who are not exhausted from this gruelling trip to face Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

He said: “Yes, players stay at home because I think with the travel many players don’t have recovery for the game of Leicester and it’s important to consider this game and also to stay a good result every time.

“This is the management of the squad and is important for us.

“Some players I think if they play this game they cannot play two days after for Leicester.

“It’s a choice for me and it’s important to respect every time different possibilities for the squad and I think we can see with the games before many players improve and make progress because they have time in games and take confidence and I think all the players, all the squad take confidence with the system, with this philosophy, and I think it’s important to continue this work.

“All the players are ready to play and with a good energy and for me it’s very important.

“For example, we have to play against Leicester on Sunday just two days after this game and Leicester have five days to recover.

“This is management and important for the Europa League and I think we have a chance to have a good team, a good squad with good young players and I think all the players make progress and improve since the beginning of the season.

“It’s important if we want for the future to continue in all the competitions to have a good squad and this is important for me.”

Puel insisted there was an understanding reaction from the players left behind, even though they may have wanted to be involved in a first away Europa League group stage match for the club.

“The reaction is a normal reaction because all the players understand the philosophy every time and five games before you change all the time the start of the team,” said Puel.

“Against Crystal Palace for example and three days after again against Swansea I make changes on the team. It’s a lot but I think all the players understand the philosophy and international players also because they don’t stop every time, they play many many games.

“They go on an international break also with many international games and it’s important to keep all the players with a good freshness and stay with a good result and a good performance.

“We can see all the time our game and our play, every time a good squad, a good team on the pitch and this is the most important.”

Austin well placed to convert Saints’ supply

Show/hide article…

A goal and an assist in Southampton’s impressive win at West Ham United on Sunday maintained Charlie Austin’s (£6.3m) recent fine form.

Handed only a single start in the first five Gameweeks, the Saints striker has staked a claim for regular pitch time under Claude Puel thanks to a series of consistent displays.

Austin now has five goals and an assist in his last four appearances across all competitions, scoring twice against Sparta Prague before also netting against Swansea City and Crystal Palace, in the EFL Cup, before his weekend display away to the Hammers.

With Shane Long (£6.2m) yet to score this season and Nathan Redmond (£6.0m) failing to find the net since Gameweek 1, Austin’s predatory instincts around the box have been vital to the Saints’ improvement.

A look back to Austin’s displays for Queens Park Rangers in 2014/15 underlines his proven Fantasy Premier League calibre.

Despite his side’s eventual relegation that year Austin was one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League, recording 18 goals, eight assists and 22 bonus points on his way to a 176-point haul.

But matches against Leicester City, Manchester City and Chelsea in the next four Gameweeks may ensure Austin’s ownership will remain around the 3% mark.

Encouragingly for the 52,000 FPL managers who have drafted him in this Gameweek, Austin is benefitting from the service offered by both Dusan Tadic (£7.2m) and Redmond.

Producing 21 and 16 key passes respectively this season, the duo are ranked in the top six creators in the Premier League and should offer Austin a steady supply of opportunities to continue his red-hot form.

Austin will offer the major threat to Leicester City this weekend, as he seeks to punish a Foxes defence which has conceded 11 goals in their six Premier League matches this season.

A confident Austin spearheading the attack for an in-form Southampton is a heady combination that promises further FPL returns.

Remember the Gameweek 7 deadline is at 7pm BST Friday 30 September

Hapoel Be’er-Sheva v Southampton preview: Saints quartet stay at home

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand have not travelled to Israel ahead of Southampton’s Europa League clash against Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday (kick-off 6pm).

The Saints are looking for a second straight victory in the competition, following their 3-0 win over Sparta Prague earlier in September.

They have won their three games since then, beating Swansea, Crystal Palace and West Ham, and sit ninth in the Premier League table, and Claude Puel has confirmed he intends to rotate his squad with one eye on Sunday’s visit to Leicester.

Puel said: "Some players stay at home, because with the travel they won’t recover.

“We have another game against Leicester and it’s important to consider this game also to try to have a good result every time.”

The Southampton boss will not underestimate their Israeli opponents, who gave Celtic a rough time in their Champions League play-off round defeat and also beat Inter Milan 2-0 in the first group game.

Austin, Fonte, Davis and Bertrand have stayed in Southampton to prepare for the Premier League trip to the King Power at the weekend.

Puel admitted he plans to “manage his squad” on Thursday, which could mean further opportunities for Maya Yoshida, Cuco Martina and Matt Targett.

Shane Long, who dropped to the bench for the win at West Ham, could also be in line for a recall in the absence of Austin, while Jay Rodriguez (groin) and Sofiane Boufal (knee) both miss out through injury.

Excluding qualifiers, English sides have won their last five trips to Israel in Europe, racking up 17 goals (3.7 per game).

Hapoel Be’er Sheva have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six European games (including qualifying), although they did concede five against Celtic in Champions League qualifying this season.

Southampton have not won back-to-back European games in a single season (excluding qualifiers) since beating Carrick Rangers’ in the 1976/77 Cup Winners’ Cup second round.

The Israeli side are unbeaten in five European home games, winning each of their last three. However, all five games have been in qualifying.

The Saints have failed to score in each of their last four UEFA Cup/Europa League away games (excluding qualifying).

Southampton are 13/10 with Sky Bet to extend their winning run by beating Hapoel (21/10), while the joint group leaders are 23/10 to share the spoils.

The Saints are currently considered joint eighth favourites to win the competition at 20/1, while the hosts are up against odds of 100/1 to lift the trophy.

Austin heads the first goalscorer betting at 5/1 but it is Long (11/2) who Soccer Saturday pundits Matt Le Tissier and Phil Thompson are backing to prove a point and break the deadlock in their Sky Bet tips.

Romeu happy to be in the thick of the action after years watching on

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu is using the memory of watching Chelsea win the Champions League and Europa League from the sidelines to motivate him when he plays in Europe for Southampton.

The midfielder is expected to start Thursday’s Europa League Group K fixture at Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel, and is targeting a run in the competition after the 3-0 defeat of Sparta Prague in their opening game.

He has been among those to benefit since Claude Puel succeeded Ronald Koeman as manager, becoming a regular in the Frenchman’s team.

In Romeu’s two seasons at Chelsea and first at Southampton he was little more than a squad player.

He spent the 2012 Champions League final as an unused substitute, when Southampton team-mate Ryan Bertrand was preferred out of position in midfield. Later that year an anterior cruciate ligament injury prematurely ended his season, which Chelsea concluded by winning the Europa League.

Asked of his memories of those occasions, the 25-year-old said: 'I remember the Champions League final with Chelsea, I was on the bench, and we won, but I didn’t play in the semi-final, didn’t play the final.

'You feel part of it, and you feel proud of yourself and your team-mates, but in your mind it’s ‘I want to win it one day being there, being on the pitch’.

'(In 2012/13) I played the last game in the Champions League in the group stage, then I got the ‘ACL’ and couldn’t play in the Europa League. I had the medal because I was in the squad, but I didn’t play.

‘As you go forward, every game is nicer, playing quarter-finals, semi-finals, it’s all watched around Europe and the world, and we all want to be there. Who wouldn’t want to win the Europa League? It’s a long run, it’s very hard, but we’re here to give everything every game.’

Hapoel are undefeated in 22 fixtures since moving to the Turner Stadium in September 2015, but Puel has chosen to rest captain Jose Fonte, top goalscorer Charlie Austin, Steven Davis and Bertrand.

He is also without the injured Jay Rodriguez, Sofiane Boufal and Jeremy Pied, but the manager - who has overseen victory in Southampton’s past four fixtures - revealed he intends to continue rotating his team.

‘Players stay at home because with the travel many don’t have recovery (time) for (Sunday’s) game with Leicester,’ he said. 'This is the management of the squad and is important for us.

'We have to play against Leicester on Sunday just two days after this game and Leicester have five days to recover. This is important for the Europa League.

‘It’s important if we want for the future to continue in all the competitions to have a good squad, and this is important for me.’
