Saints fans set off for Israel - but nuts are banned

Show/hide article…

HUNDREDS of intrepid Saints fans are today travelling to a region better known for its unrest and violence than it is for its football.

Devoted supporters are following Claude’s Puel’s men on a 4,000-mile round trip to Israel where they will travel to the southern city of Beer Sheva to face the Israeli champions Hapoel Beer Sheva.

After spending thousands of pounds on flights and hotels to make the journey to one of football’s most obscure backwaters for just 90 minutes of Europa League action, the bold travellers will still have to deal with tight security and the ever-present threat of violence in a deeply unsettled region.

Because of the safety issues surrounding the trip, Saints have distributed safety information to each of their fans that will be making the journey.

Saints have also laid on free bus travel to supporters from Tel Aviv to Beer Sheva, which means around an hour’s drive through the troubled region to get to the game for some.

The club have warned supporters that they can expect to be questioned repeatedly about the purpose of their trip, where they are staying and other information relating to their visit.

Security forces will even want to know who they met with and if they received a gift.

Saints have tried to put fans at ease, stating: “The main thing to remember is not to worry about this process - their security is outstanding for your safety, it is their job to ask the question, and you can remain calm and relaxed throughout.”

It is some contrast to your average Premier League away day.

There is even a 600m exclusion zone outside the stadium for security reasons on match days, which means no cars get close to the stadium, including taxis.

On top of advice not to bring flags that contain any abusive, political or inflammatory words or phrases, Saints have also told fans that security forces will be far less tolerant of drunken behaviour than the police in the UK.

“Police are less tolerant of drunken behaviour,” the document states.

“You can and will be arrested and detained. This may results in you missing your flights, and travel insurance will most likely become invalid.”

The newly built 16,000-seater Turner Stadium where Hapoel are based bizarrely has, along with bans on smoking, alcohol, drugs, fireworks and weapons, a restriction on bringing in seeds and nut cracking inside the ground.

“Please note the unusual ban - ‘No seeds/nut cracking’. So please, for everyone’s safety and wellbeing, leave your pistachios at home!!” Saints’ information document states.

Beer Sheva is known as the major city in Negev, a neglected region with a poor image.

Travelling to Israel, a deeply unsettled region, has its risks with ongoing tensions surrounding the Palestine-Israel Conflict.

But, now, Saints find themselves setting camp up there ahead of their first ever match in Israel.

The city itself has a population of more than 200,000 people.

It is the sixth largest city in the country and is the gateway to the Negev region.

Because of its desert location, the city is well spread out and it is a mostly middle class town.

However, the area has been blighted by conflict since in the mid-20th century and while there is cessation in the most dramatic violence around the Gaza Strip, there are still many problems.

Beer Sheva isn’t far from two of the areas known to be among the most unsettled, with the West Bank less than 30 minutes to the north and the Gaza Strip to the west around half an hour drive away.

They’ve been chasing the league crown for the last three seasons and finally managed to upset the nation’s big guns Maccabi Tel Aviv by winning it.

It was their first league title in 40 years.

For a long time Hapoel had been underachievers, for most of the last ten years they’ve yo-yoed up and down from the second division to the top-flight without ever doing anything remarkable.

It was down to a change of ownership in 2007 that hailed the beginning of a new era, which has brought them to this point.

Nine years ago, Alona Barkat became the first female owner of a football club in Israel, which marked the beginning of Beer Sheva’s upturn in fortunes.

Before Barkat stepped in, Hapoel were crumbling in the second tier and owned by a local businessman, suffering under debts and poor results.

Hapoel have built themselves a plush new stadium after spending the last 50 years in the poorly equipped Wasermil Stadium.

Barkat, injected money, and, after some early mistakes, has been influential in turning their fortunes around.

Jose Fonte calm on Southampton contract after Manchester United talk

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Jose Fonte has said nothing has been agreed over a new contract following summer transfer links with Manchester United.

Club sources told ESPN FC that United had informal talks with Southampton over a deal for centre-back Fonte, but a switch failed to come to fruition before the transfer window closed.

The Portugal international, whose current deal expires in 2018, said in the Daily Mirror: "There’s nothing on the table, so I’m waiting. I’ll see what happens. I’m just focusing on performing and we’ll see what happens.

“We haven’t agreed anything, it’s just talks.”

The Daily Mirror reports that Southampton are looking to tie Fonte down on a £70,000-a-week deal.

Fonte signed for the Saints from Crystal Palace in 2010 and has since made 248 league appearances.

Ex-Saint Shearer: We’re the laughing stock of world football

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints star Alan Shearer has described England as “the laughing stock of world football” in the wake of Sam Allardyce’s departure.

Shearer, who captained England, said: "I didn’t think England could stoop any lower from what happened in the summer in the Euros (losing) to Iceland.

"And now, here we are. We’re a laughing stock of world football.

“We’ve got a problem. It’s greed, isn’t it? We have to be able to accept people laughing at us.”

Another ex-England skipper, Rio Ferdinand, was singing from the same hymn sheet .

“I think the rest of the football community around the world will just be laughing at us. It just feels like it’s become a comical event, the England manager’s role,” he said.

''This is the man who was probably the most vocal about getting the England job, the most passionate outwardly about getting the England job, but unfortunately he’s backed the FA into a corner and they’ve had to act because of his actions."

Could former Saints boss be a candidate to replace Sam Allardyce?

Show/hide article…

The shock ending to Sam Allardyce’s ill-fated England reign has left the national team without a manager just days before resuming World Cup qualification.

Here, the Daily Echo looks at some of the leading contenders to fill the void.

GARETH SOUTHGATE Highly thought of by the decision-makers at the Football Association, the former Middlesbrough boss was brought into the fold to coach the Under-21s with an eye on future progression. Faltered at last year’s Under-21 European Championship but led the team to victory at the Toulon tournament in the summer. Had no interest in succeeding Hodgson but takes charge for England’s next four matches against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and Spain while the FA looks for a permanent appointment.

STEVE BRUCE The former Manchester United defender was interviewed in the summer about the vacant England manager’s job. Just days after speaking to the FA, Bruce decided to call time on his spell at Hull, where he had become the most successful manager in the club’s history. He remains out of work.

EDDIE HOWE A smart, erudite and tactically-savvy coach who, at 38, looks to have a bright future at the top of the game. The manager has flourished at Bournemouth and only last week described coaching England as the “ultimate” job. “I would never say no,” Howe said.

ALAN PARDEW Seemed to be a new man after swapping Newcastle for Crystal Palace and some fine early-season results saw him seriously linked with the England job for the first time in his career. The former Saints boss reached the FA Cup final but league results tailed off badly. A slow start to this campaign has been followed by three successive Premier League victories.

JURGEN KLINSMANN The former Tottenham striker has managerial experience at international level, having been in charge of the United States for almost five years and Germany before that. America fell to a semi-final Copa America exit in the summer while Klinsmann guided Germany to the last-four stage at the 2006 World Cup.

GARY NEVILLE Seemed a heavy favourite to progress from his role as Hodgson’s assistant until his ill-advised stint with Valencia saw his stock plummet. It may yet be decided that was a case of the wrong job but the right man. Out of coaching since exiting with Hodgson during the summer, the videos of Allardyce appear to show him saying Neville was the “wrong influence” on his predecessor.

Eight managers with Premier League experience alleged to have taken bribes

Show/hide article…

Eight unnamed managers with Premier League experience are alleged to have taken bribes for the transfers of players during secretly filmed interviews with several agents.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper, responsible for the undercover investigation which cost England boss Sam Allardyce his job, secretly filmed several agents over the past 10 months.

One of those agents allegedly named managers who he claimed had received payments for the transfer of players - although he later denied paying bribes to any of them.

The Telegraph name Pino Pagliari, an unlicensed Italian agent, as one of the agents they secretly filmed and report that he claimed a former top-flight boss had “more backhanders than Wimbledon”.

The allegations come a day after the newspaper revealed former Bolton, Blackburn, Newcastle, West Ham and Sunderland boss Allardyce offering advice on how to “get around” rules on player transfers during a secretly filmed meeting.

The Daily Telegraph has also reported that Cardiff launched an investigation after auditors discovered evidence of unexplained payments relating to the 2014 loan move of Ravel Morrison from West Ham, then managed by Allardyce.

A spokesman for the Bluebirds is reported as saying: “We investigated the matter thoroughly” while the Football Association and Allardyce have yet to respond to the allegations, as has Morrison - who now plays in Italy with Lazio.

The Daily Telegraph has said it will pass transcripts to the Football Association and will also hand over information to the police.

The newspaper also revealed it had contacted all of the managers named by the agents and that five of them had responded with denials of taking bungs while three had not responded.

The newspaper has reported that later this week it will disclose the name of an assistant manager at a leading club who was filmed accepting a £5,000 cash payment from undercover reporters posing as representatives of a Far Eastern firm that was seeking to invest in players.

The Press Association is seeking a response from all those named by the Daily Telegraph in their report.

Allardyce joins ex-Saints Keegan and Hoddle in list of England bosses with shortest reigns

Show/hide article…

Sam Allardyce’s short-lived stint as England manager has come to an end after his contract with the Football Association was terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday.

The former Bolton boss lasted just 67 days in the post, the shortest ever tenure for a permanent Three Lions manager, and he took charge of just one game.

Here, the Daily Echo assesses how Allardyce’s fleeting reign compares with other England bosses - including two ex-Saints in Kevin Keegan and Glenn Hoddle.

SAM ALLARDYCE (July 2016 - September 2016, one game) Allardyce’s tenure began with a smile in July but ended in humiliation in October after just 67 days. Having left Sunderland to take up the role he craved for so long, Allardyce guided his country to a solitary 2018 World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia earlier this month. It is the shortest reign of any of England’s 14 permanent managers.

STEVE McCLAREN (August 2006 - November 2007, 18 games) McClaren was appointed after the FA failed in its attempts to lure Luiz Felipe Scolari from his post as Portugal boss but it would prove to be a poisoned chalice for the former Middlesbrough manager. His failure to secure England a place at Euro 2008 - the first time in 14 years they had not qualified for a major tournament - saw him sacked after just 18 games.

KEVIN KEEGAN (February 1999 - October 2000, 18 games) Keegan also lasted just 18 games and his spell ended in ignominious fashion after England fell to a 1-0 defeat against Germany in their final game at the old Wembley Stadium. Keegan, who went on to manage Manchester City before briefly returning to Newcastle in 2008, has the lowest win-percentage of any permanent England boss at 38.9 per cent.

TERRY VENABLES (January 1994 - June 1996, 24 games) Venables announced five months before Euro 96 that he would be standing down due to off-the-field matters. Despite a largely successful tournament for the Three Lions, where they reached the semi-finals on home soil, the former Tottenham manager still left his role after two and a half years, and 24 games, and was replaced by Glenn Hoddle.

GLENN HODDLE (July 1996 - February 1999, 28 games) Hoddle lasted just 28 games himself after he left by mutual consent in February 1999 following controversial comments he made about disabled people. His win-percentage of 60.7 per cent ranks favourably with his predecessors - England’s World Cup-winning boss Sir Alf Ramsey managed 61.1 per cent - and was touted as a potential contender for the job before Allardyce was appointed.
