Paul Pogba, Sergio Aguero and Philippe Coutinho feature in the Fantasy Football XI

Show/hide article…

Philippe Coutinho stars in the latest Sky Sports Fantasy Football team of the week after leading Liverpool to a 5-1 thumping of Hull.

Coutinho is joined by his Reds team-mate James Milner in the XI, while Southampton also boast two players in an attacking line-up from a weekend which saw 34 Premier League goals.

Here’s who else makes the side…

Competition was hardly fierce for the spot between the sticks again this week, with only four Premier League sides keeping clean sheets. Boruc makes the line-up courtesy of costing less than Burnley’s Tom Heaton (£5.8m), Southampton’s Fraser Forster (£6.4m) and Arsenal’s Petr Cech (£7.5m).

Southampton were the only side to record a clean sheet on the road and Bertrand also helped them at the other end of the pitch, providing an assist in a 3-0 demolition of West Ham on Super Sunday.

Arsenal recorded the same scoreline against London rivals Chelsea on Saturday, with Bellerin matching Bertrand’s points total as he set up Theo Walcott’s goal.

It was the cheapest of the defensive trio who top scored, with Keane heading home Burnley’s second in their 2-0 win over an abject Watford side on Monday Night Football.

Coutinho was the star of the week as he inspired a 5-1 mauling of 10-man Hull, ticking all the boxes for an attacking midfielder in scoring one, setting up another and picking up additional bonus points for passes completed and shots on target.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses may be put off by Milner being utilised as a left back, but he rewarded those who have kept faith, scoring from the spot twice, while also picking up bonus points for completing over 60 passes.

Former Liverpool midfielder Allen helped Stoke break a run of four successive defeats, putting them ahead as part of a man-of-the-match display, only for Salomon Rondon to deny them all three points late on.

It’s fair to say Pogba has struggled to live up to his hefty Sky Sports Fantasy Football price tag, let alone his world-record transfer fee, but he did manage to more than double his points total with a goal and the MOTM award in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Leicester.

The Argentina star returned to the top of the goalscorer’s chart on five goals alongside Diego Costa and Michail Antonio following a three-match ban, bagging a brace at Swansea to remind us why he is the most expensive player in the game.

While all eyes were on whether Vincent Janssen could fill Harry Kane’s boots, Tottenham’s almost forgotten man popped up with a sublime double to fire them to a 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough.

If there was any lingering doubt in Claude Puel’s mind as to who his main goalscoring threat was before Sunday’s trip to West Ham, it was suitably settled with a typically instinctive finish from Austin, who has now scored five goals in his last four appearances.

Fonte puts Man United on transfer alert with Southampton contract comments

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte has put Manchester United on alert by raising fresh doubts over his Southampton future.

United c onsidered a move for Fonte this summer and could revive their interest in the Portugal Euro 2016 winner in January.

The Saints are desperate to keep skipper Fonte and have held discussions over a new £70,000-a-week deal.

But the defender said: “There’s nothing on the table, so I’m waiting. I’ll see what happens. I’m just focusing on performing and we’ll see what happens.

Man United News: Transfer boost, defender injury update, No.10 battle

Show/hide article…

Manchester United have seemingly been dealt a boost in their pursuit of Southampton skipper Jose Fonte. According to the Mirror, the Saints are desperate to keep Fonte on the south coast and are already in discussions over a new £70,000-a-week deal for their influential captain. But the 32-year-old appears to be in no rush to put pen to paper on fresh terms at St Mary’s, saying: “There’s nothing on the table, so I’m waiting. I’ll see what happens.

"I’m just focusing on performing and we’ll see what happens. We haven’t agreed anything, it’s just talks.”

Phil Jones is finally closing in on a comeback from injury, according to reports. The 24-year-old was in line to feature in United’s Europa League clash with Feyenoord a fortnight ago but his return to first-team action was delayed by a knee ligament injury suffered in training. And there were fears Jones could be faced with another extended spell on the sidelines after he was fitted with a leg brace to stabilise the joint.

But, according to the Daily Mail, the former Blackburn man has had his brace removed and could return to training as early as next week.

Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will both be desperate to impress when United take on Ukrainian minnows Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League tomorrow. The attacking duo are in line to start the Group A tie after missing out on last weekend’s Premier League win over Leicester. And they reportedly have work to do if they are to have any chance of starting against Stoke in the Premier League on Sunday. The Manchester Evening News believe the most likely route back into Jose Mourinho’s first team for both players is as a direct replacement for Juan Mata, who took up the No.10 role against the Foxes.

Claude gets set for more Saints rotation

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel is set to continue with his wholesale squad changes tomorrow night as Saints visit Hapoel Beer Sheva in Europa League.

The St Mary’s chief is certainly making the most of his entire squad after naming a different starting eleven in each of his eight matches in charge so far.

He has made an extraordinary 30 changes in the last four games, which is a remarkable change from any of his predecessors.

Mauricio Pochettino was known to swap players around for cup games, but nothing on this scale.

And that theme is fully expected to continue when Saints take on Israeli champions Hapoel at the Turner Stadium, with Puel looking for his fifth straight victory in all competitions.

The Frenchman has always maintained that he plans to keep his team fresh by chopping and changing in the majority of matches.

With the current punishing run of fixtures, Puel has made the most of his options.

He brought in the likes of Cuco Martina, Matt Targett and Maya Yoshida for the Sparta Prague triumph two weeks ago and has also given youngster Jake Hesketh and Harrison Reed a chance in the EFL Cup victory over Crystal Palace.

The likes of Dusan Tadic, Oriol Romeu, Virgil van Dijk and Fraser Forster have appeared in the majority of matches, but Puel has still rested them, giving each of his squad the chance to recover.

The new boss is, so far, successfully maintaining the balance of the team, even with the high turnover of players coming in and out the team from game to game.

That has taken careful squad management.

And it is thought that he’ll continue to do that tomorrow with another game at Leicester City in the Premier League fast approaching on Sunday.

While there is a risk that the constant changes could upset the harmony of the team, Puel is managing to keep up Saints’ momentum while also resting players.

Midfielder Steven Davis has stated that it is actually helping the team and said that it keeps the players on their toes, making sure they do not get comfortable in a starting position.

Puel started slowly with his tinkering, making just two changes at Manchester United, one against Sunderland and three against Arsenal during the early stages of the season.

But, with games coming thick and fast, he is now upping those levels.

For Saints’ opening Europa League match against Sparta, Puel made seven changes.

He then made six against Swansea, eight against Palace in the League Cup third-round and then NINE at West Ham on Sunday.

All this chopping and changing does mean that the likes of Shane Long, Jordy Clasie and James Ward-Prowse come into the Hapoel match fresh after starting on the bench against the Hammers.

He may well commit to swapping the defence around too, with Martina, Targett and Yoshida rested and ready.

Man United defender target puts Jose Mourinho on alert with contract revelation

Show/hide article…

United were heavily linked with a move for the Portuguese defender in the summer and Jose Mourinho could decide to revive his interest when the transfer window reopens in January.

According to the Mirror, the Saints are desperate to keep Fonte on the south coast and are already in discussions over a new £70,000-a-week deal for their influential captain.

“There’s nothing on the table, so I’m waiting.” But the 32-year-old appears to be in no rush to put pen to paper on fresh terms at St Mary’s, saying: “There’s nothing on the table, so I’m waiting.

"I’ll see what happens. I’m just focusing on performing and we’ll see what happens.

“We haven’t agreed anything, it’s just talks.”

Fonte has appeared in all but one of Southampton’s six Premier League matches this season, missing just the opening day draw with Watford.

The Euro 2016 winner is currently tied to the Saints until 2018.

Puel gave academy starlets huge boost on his first day at Saints

Show/hide article…

A PLEASED James Ward-Prowse admitted that one of Claude Puel’s first acts as Saints manager was to tell the young players that there is a clear route for them to the first-team.

Puel was hired as Ronald Koeman’s replacement in June and on his first day he made it abundantly clear to academy products that they would be rewarded with an opportunity to impress in the first-team if they merited it.

The Frenchman’s predecessor Koeman slated the famed academy that has produced the likes of Gareth Bale, Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw by stating that some of the players were not close to the required Premier League standard.

The contrasting statement of intent by Puel was music to Ward-Prowse’s ears.

Himself an academy graduate, the England Under-21 captain was delighted that Puel was willing to give the young players a chance because he feels that the youth programme is the cornerstone of the club.

“He (Puel) made it clear on the first day he was here that it was the case that the pathway is there for young players,” said the 21-year-old midfielder.

“He said that they (the young players) have just got to come on and take their opportunity and impress when they can.

“It’s pleasing to see that.

“The club is based on that. I’ve gone through that process myself, so to see that the club are continuing to do that is great.”

Ward-Prowse pressed home the importance of the academy, which has a history of creating some of the nation’s best players.

The midfielder is joined by Matt Targett from the academy as one Puel’s regulars in the first-team, with Harrison Reed and Jake Hesketh also the fringes.

Hesketh and Reed started against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup third-round and subsequently impressed, with the former grabbing a goal to go with an excellent display.

Ward-Prowse admits that it is “great” to play alongside other Staplewood youngsters.

“It’s important,” he said. “It’s an ethos that the club have had and it’s something that the club need to continue.

“It’s brought a lot of success on the pitch and for all the lads and it’s great to have fellow academy graduates on the pitch with me as well.”
