Claude Puel praises his Southampton side: They’re finally playing the way I want them to

Show/hide article…

After collecting a first Premier League win under their new French coach last weekend, Southampton made it three straight victories when they knocked Crystal Palace out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night. And starting today at the London Stadium, the men from St Mary’s go on a run of three tough games before the international break. Following the West Ham game, Southampton’s European campaign continues with a five-hour flight to southern Israel for Thursday night’s Europa League tie against Hapoel Be’er Sheva before preparing to tackle Leicester on Sunday. Puel rotated his squad for both their opening Europa League win over Sparta Prague, when Charlie Austin scored twice in the 3-0 win, and again for the Palace cup match, which saw eight changes. The French coach who had spells with Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice before coming to England following Ronald Koeman’s summer departure, has faith in whatever team he selects.

“We have to show intensity, quality and a desire to play this game” “With all of these matches it is important to keep good energy and possibilities. We must keep the same identity now all of the players have this philosophy and it is important to keep this idea, the level of our game,” Puel said. “Our different players can show their qualities, because they all participate with the same idea and organisation. “This means we have the possibilities to change the starting line-up of the team without changing the style of the team, we must continue with this way.” Puel added: “These three games away are going to be difficult but also a very good challenge, in that my players can show they have the ability to stay strong with a good level and I hope with good results. “It is the most difficult thing after all the long travels, with the physical demands of the games and playing with energy, to go to Israel and come back, then after two days to play Leicester. “But it is important first to stay concentrated about West Ham, because this will be a very difficult game.”

The Hammers sit third bottom of the Premier League, with just three points from five matches. Slaven Bilic’s injury-hit squad edged past Accrington 1-0 in the cup on Wednesday night, a result which halted a run of four straight defeats. Having lost three successive Premier League matches, conceding four against both Watford and then last week at West Brom, Puel knows his Saints team will have to watch it. “Whether these results have been because it is difficult for them to play in the new stadium, I don’t know but I am sure that we are going to be seeing a good team with a good reaction, so it is key for us to be ready in own mind,” said Puel. “We have to show intensity, quality and a desire to play this game.”

Philippe Coutinho, Heung-Min Son, Fernando Llorente in goals of day

Show/hide article…

Philippe Coutinho, Heung-Min Son, Fernando Llorente… Who scored the best goal of the day in the Premier League?

With eight Premier League matches on Saturday, there were plenty of fantastic goals, among them Juan Mata’s strike in Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Leicester at lunchtime.

Demarai Gray also features after netting a consolation effort for the Premier League champions.

Son scored a fine solo goal as Tottenham won 2-1 at Middlesbrough while Coutinho fired in a great strike in Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Hull at Anfield.

Junior Stanislas’ goal for Bournemouth against Everton proved decisive and Llorente hit a fine effort as Swansea were beaten at home by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Rounding off proceedings is Theo Walcott’s goal against Chelsea, with the Arsenal winger finishing off a fine team move from Hector Bellerin’s cross.

Best Bets for West Ham against Southampton and Watford at Burnley

Show/hide article…

It’s time to hammer the bookies for peddling West Ham crisis hype.

Putting up this slightly toothless Southampton side at just 6/4 to outgun the free-scoring Hammers at the London Stadium today is calling it too strong on what we’ve seen so far.

The power and ambitions read much more evenly balanced than that.

If you play at skinny prices then the 8/13 (BetVictor) about West Ham PLUS half a goal is the outstanding value of the day.

A West Ham WIN at 21/10 (888sport) isn’t far behind.

Dimitri Payet ‘LAST goalscorer’ is a fun longshot at 17/2 (Bet365) on his data - the little French dazzler’s mojo seems to get a second wind in added-time.

Yes, West Ham have conceded 11 goals in their last three Premier League games, but they’ve only failed to score in one of 27 games since losing 1-0 at Southampton last February.

Watford can claim just one clean sheet since February - but hope will be springing afresh for tomorrow’s trip to Burnley , who look very thin on threat.

Ambitions will dictate the shape - but NO ‘both sides to score’ at 10/11 covers the main angles.

Puel hails Forster – “you see him and you’re afraid”

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel has hailed his goalkeeper Fraser Forster after two cleansheet, stating that he believes the England international strikes fear into opponents.

He also praised Saints for their recent defensive performances, which have seen them go on a run of three games without conceding.

Puel has worked with goalkeepers of such standing as France number one and Tottenham stopper Hugo Lloris when he was manager of Lyon.

But the French manager hasn’t come across many keepers with such an enormous physical presence between the sticks as Saints’ England international.

The St Mary’s chief says “you see him and you’re afraid” when talking about the towering 6ft 7inch Forster.

After keeping three successive cleansheets, Saints are now aiming for another at West Ham today.

Forster has recorded two shutouts against Sparta Prague and Swansea before understudy Alex McCarthy kept Crystal Palace out on Wednesday night in the 2-0 League Cup win.

“I think Fraser has different qualities to Lloris, they are not the same but two very good goalkeepers,” said Puel.

"Lloris for example likes to go out of his goal but Fraser likes to stay on his line with big stature.

“He can take up all of the goal and it’s difficult to score against Fraser, he’s very tall and you see him and you’re afraid. He is a very good goalkeeper.

“The defence though is all of the team. If we see the work of Fraser since the beginning of the season, he has not had to make many saves in the game because all the team is strong with a good organisation.

"This is very important. For me, the team defends well as a team. It comes from all of the team and the reaction.

"It’s the same in attack. I would like at the end of the season to have 14 or 15 different players to have scored in the Premier League. All the team attack and all of the team defend.”

Clasie appreciating Puel’s new system

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie says Southampton head to London to face West Ham United on Sunday with renewed confidence and better understanding as to how their manager, Claude Puel, wants them to play.

Southampton have won their last three matches with six goals unanswered, beating Sparta Prague in the UEFA Europa League, Swansea City in the Premier League last weekend and Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup in midweek and Clasie says practising Puel’s style of play has paid off.

“In the first couple of weeks I think it was a bit difficult for every player to play the system,” he told saintsfc.co.uk. “We had a lot of meetings about that but everyone agreed that we have to work on it and we’re very happy with the last few games.”
