Shane Long’s profligacy opens door for Charlie Austin to start for Saints

Show/hide article…

As the rest of his teammates mobbed starlet Jake Hesketh following his maiden Southampton goal in Wednesday’s 2-0 EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace, most inside the St Mary’s Stadium missed Shane Long kicking his boot against a post in frustration. It was a bizarre moment, drawn to the nation’s attention by eagle-eyed former England goalkeeper David James while working as pundit for television show Football on 5.

Long could not hide his distress having just passed up a golden chance to find the net for the first time this season when Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey saved his close-range one-on-one effort before Hesketh gleefully dispatched the rebound into the top corner.

Realising he was in danger of stealing the spotlight away from midfielder Hesketh, 20 – the latest product from Saints’ fertile and world-renowned youth academy – Long quickly regained his composure and, sporting a wry smile, cajoled himself into joining in the celebrations. However it was not the first time this season Long has let his frustrations get the better of him, publicly portraying his unhappiness after being substituted during the 2-0 reverse at Manchester United in August.

Despite still being regarded by his training-ground colleagues as a vital cog in the Saints wheel, there is no disguising the fact Long’s lack of form has taken its toll on the affable Republic of Ireland striker. Gone is the smile that adorned his face for much of last season, when his best ever Premier League goal haul helped drive Southampton to a Europa League place that looked improbable halfway through the campaign.

It was a similar story during the European Championship in France, when a combination of being starved of service and the weariness from running himself into the ground week-in week-out for Saints saw Long struggle to make any kind of impact. In fact, you have to go back 14 games to Ireland’s 1-1 friendly draw with Netherlands in May, in front of the watching Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino – who was linked with a summer move for the former Hull and West Brom marksman – for Long’s last goal for club or country.

Long ended speculation about leaving the south coast by penning a bumper new contract on the eve of the season, and perhaps the security that comes with knowing he has signed the last big paycheque of his career has also contributed to his newfound profligacy.

Whatever the reason for the reversal in fortunes, and despite a much improved performance in the Palace triumph, manager Claude Puel has a big call to make over Long’s place in his team, especially with fellow striker Charlie Austin bang in form having scored four goals in his last three matches.

Puel’s decision to leave out Austin for last weekend’s 1-0 win over Swansea, when the ex-QPR ace came off the bench to score a second-half winner, raised eyebrows. If the out-of-sorts Long is once again preferred to Austin when Southampton, searching for a fourth straight win in all competitions, travel to the resplendent London Stadium to face struggling West Ham on Sunday, the former has every right to feel aggrieved.

Against Palace, Long’s runs into the channel, stretching an injury-hit Eagles defence, helped produce openings for Austin. However Puel remains keen to shoehorn winger Nathan Redmond into a central striking role, even comparing the summer signing from Norwich to Arsenal icon Thierry Henry, whom he coached in France.

Assuming Redmond starts on Sunday, either Long or Austin will find themselves surveying proceedings from the bench. If judged by this season’s performance, there is only one inevitable outcome.

Claude Puel insists Southampton are ‘pulling in the right direction’

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel believes his whole squad have bought into his footballing philosophy and that a sense of collective identity will help see the club through a string of three testing away games, which start at West Ham on Sunday.

After collecting a first Premier League win under their new French coach last weekend, the Saints made it three straight victories when they knocked Crystal Palace out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Following the West Ham game, Southampton’s European campaign continues with a five-hour flight to southern Israel for Thursday night’s Europa League tie against Hapoel Be’er Sheva before preparing to tackle Leicester on October 2, after which many of the players will head away again over the international break.

Puel utilised his squad for both their opening Europa League win over Sparta Prague, when Charlie Austin scored twice in the 3-0 win, and again for the Palace cup match, which saw eight changes.

The French coach, who had spells with Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice before coming to England following Ronald Koeman’s summer departure, has faith in whatever team he selects.

‘With all of these many matches it is important to keep good energy and possibilities. We must keep the same identity now all of the players have this philosophy and it is important to keep this idea, the level of our game,’ Puel said.

'Our different players can show their qualities, because they all participate with the same idea and organisation.

‘This means we have the possibilities to change the starting (XI) of the team without changing the style of the team, we must continue with this way.’

Puel added: 'These three games away are going to be difficult, but also a very good challenge, (in) that my players can show they have the ability to stay strong with a good level and I hope with good results.

'It is the most difficult thing after all the long travels, with the physical (demands of the games) and playing with energy, to go there (Israel) and come back, then after two days to play Leicester.

‘But it is important first to stay concentrated about West Ham, because this will be a very difficult game.’

The Hammers sit third bottom of the Premier League, with just three points from five matches.

Saints legend Lambert ends 11-month goal drought

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Rickie Lambert scored his first goals for 11 months today.

The striker scored twice as Cardiff City moved out of the Championship relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Rotherham.

Lambert is on loan to the Welsh club from West Bromwich Albion, and prior to today had only scored three goals in 48 league appearances since leaving Saints in May 2014.

Lambert only scored twice in the Premier League for Liverpool in 2014/15, while his only goal for West Brom in the top flight last season was a penalty in October.

Lambert headed Peter Whittingham’s inswinging cross home on 74 minutes, before he fired past Lee Camp with a deflected effort five minutes later.

Ronald Koeman a loser on his first south coast retun

Show/hide article…

Junior Stanislas’ 20-yard drive condemned Ronald Koeman to his first Premier League defeat as Everton boss on his first south coast return today.

Junior Stanislas scored the only goal as Bournemouth held out for a 1-0 victory at Dean Court.

Stanislas proved Everton’s tormentor-in-chief for the second season running, firing the only goal on the south coast - to add to his late brace that stole a 3-3 draw last term.

The 26-year-old’s second goal eight minutes into stoppage time had wrestled Bournemouth that dramatic draw in the November 21 corresponding fixture last season.

This time the Cherries needed no last-gasp heroics however, as Stainslas’ 23rd-minute strike proved sufficient to secure a second win of the campaign for Eddie Howe’s men.

Everton’s fine start to Premier League life under former Saints boss Koeman hit the skids on the south coast, with the visitors unable to find rhythm or fluency.

For the second season running, Koeman suffered a shock loss at Dean Court - Saints have lost 2-0 there last March.

The Toffees were unable to add to their four wins and one draw in the league, perhaps still smarting from their 2-0 midweek EFL Cup home defeat to Norwich.

Bournemouth boss Howe and his charges cared not for Koeman’s troubles however, with a priceless second league win of the campaign safely in the bag.

Everton will return north with Koeman left to ponder the lack of impact from £25million summer recruit Yannick Bolasie, and general disconnect between striker Romelu Lukaku and his supporting cast.

Bournemouth dominated an engaging first half, Stanislas’ fine 20-yard strike separating the sides at the break.

Everton had only themselves to blame for trailing by that solitary goal at the turnaround, the visitors curiously sluggish in possession.

Artur Boruc saved well from Romelu Lukaku’s point-blank header, but after that the Toffees struggled.

Jack Wilshere ought to have opened the scoring, only for the lunging Seamus Coleman to deflect the ball on to the bar.

Callum Wilson outmuscled Ashley Williams before squaring unselfishly to the onrushing Wilshere, and the Arsenal loanee really should have buried the gilt-edged chance.

Harry Arter’s drive across the face of goal brushed the outside post with Maarten Stekelenburg motionless.

But just when Bournemouth started to fret about missed chances, Stanislas produced the first half’s superlative moment, driving home from outside the box.

Arter’s inside ball found the 26-year-old in far too much space, and the former West Ham forward duly seized full advantage.

Everton’s frustrations grew as the second-half unfolded, with the relentless Arter increasingly adept at stemming the Merseysiders’ approach play.

Boruc tipped away Gerard Deulofeu’s testing cross, while the largely anonymous Bolasie drove over from 18 yards.

What rallies Everton could muster came to nothing, Bournemouth holding firm despite five minutes’ stoppage time for a fully-merited victory.
