Hesketh gives Puel a problem

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel admitted Jake Hesketh has given him plenty to think about after the 20-year-old scored his first ever Saints goal.

The academy graduate hadn’t played for the first team since December 2014 before being named in last night’s side to face Crystal Palace in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The attacking midfielder put in a fantastic performance in the 2-0 win, rounding it off with a well taken goal in the second period.

Puel has a wealth of options at the top of the diamond, with Dusan Tadic in good form and Sofiane Boufal edging nearer to fitness, but Hesketh is now well in the mix.

“I think with the quality that he show with under-23s it was not a problem for the start for me to give him a chance and to give him a solution for the team and the future,” said Puel.

“I know him and it’s a good performance for him, very good second goal, and I am happy for him. He takes his chance and I think he was in the same level like with the under-23s.

“It’s important now to make his performance now as a professional.

“I am happy also with the game of Harry Reed and perhaps all the time it would be as defence of the squad, the academy. It’s always important to improve and develop these young players.

Puel made eight changes from the team that defeated Swansea for the 2-0 victory over Palace as he continues to rotate his squad in a busy run of fixtures.

After three wins in a week he is a happy man.

“It was a very good performance for all the squad because all the players participate with these good results and it’s important to continue the work,” he admitted.

“It was a different game with a different team at the start.

“I think it was important to give possibilities for young players, and they take their chances with a very good performance.

“All this it is always interesting for the future and gives many possibilities and different solutions for the team.

“It’s a good performance with a good dynamic for the squad.”

Charlie Austin bagged the goal, making it four in the last three for the £4m striker.

“Without problem with the penalty because he was the one to shoot the penalty his time,” said Puel, referring jokingly to the debate between Austin and Tadic for the spot kick against Sparta Prague.

“It is a good thing for Charlie. He is confident at this moment and for the team possibilities to have a good result, but it is not just Charlie. All the players can do a very good game, and like Shane also with a very good game.

“I think the goalkeeper made two or three saves which were very important. Shane was unlucky but his performance is very interesting.”

THE VERDICT: A perfect week for Puel

Show/hide article…

What a week it’s been for Claude Puel.

When he woke up last Thursday morning he may well have felt a sense of trepidation.

As a new manager he knew how badly he needed to get the wheels of his Saints bandwagon rolling.

Fast forward to just a week later and you wonder what all the fuss was about.

A run of three home games, and three home wins, has made all the difference.

Saints are up and running in the Europa League, back into midtable in the top flight, and victory in the EFL Cup against Crystal Palace added to the feeling of momentum.

You also sense it was a big week for the Saints squad.

It’s not just getting that winning feeling, and a release of pressure, but the very real confidence and togetherness they will have from the knowledge that they genuinely are in it together.

It’s so easy to say those words. You hear them all the time from managers, that’s it’s not just about 11 players but a squad.

However, when it comes down to it they tend to stick with what they know and not take too many chances.

Puel has proved he isn’t like that. He really has mixed it up, making wholesale changes for each of these three games.

He has used the full breadth of what has been available to him, and has discovered he has an extra gem to call upon in the shape of Jake Hesketh.

From the point of view of the squad, it does forge togetherness, with everyone knowing they have a part to play.

Such is the way of things right now, there is no let up.

If three home games provided something tangible to get teeth into, now a run of three away games, including a trip to Israel, poses a real challenge.

At least Saints go into it buoyed rather than worrying.

The first half against Palace started fairly flat, Charlie Austin threatening twice but being correctly flagged for offside.

However, as it wore on Saints started to get greater control of the match and looked extremely comfortable.

They put Palace under immense pressure and might well have had more than a one goal advantage at the break.

The first time they really put Palace under the pump they got the opening goal.

Jose Fonte started it by laying a pass out to Cuco Martina on the right. His cross in wasn’t great and should have been dealt with by Martin Kelly.

He made a total mess of attempting to control the ball and then an ever greater mess trying to make up for it.

Kelly dived into a rash challenge and ploughed through the back of Shane Long, leaving referee James Adcock with no choice but to award a penalty.

Austin stepped up, this time without any debate from Dusan Tadic with the Serbian on the bench, and rolled it into the bottom corner.

Saints spent the last ten minutes of the half creating chance after chance.

Jake Hesketh was at the centre of it, looking a totally different player to the one who was smashed off the pitch at Burnley back in December 2014.

His vision and weight of pass at the top of the diamond was exemplary.

Hesketh forced Wayne Hennessey into a scrambling save down to his left from a header before Long got to the right by-line and cut back to Austin, who half volleyed over on the spin from 12 yards out.

A wonderful reverse pass played in Austin moments later, but Hennessey did very well to get off his line quickly to close down and make the save.

He was in action again to get enough of a touch to turn away Martina’s drive from a tight angle.

Hennessey was beaten in first half stoppage time as Long was played in by Hesketh and rounded the keeper. However, Damien Delaney made good ground and slid in at the last moment to stop the ball going in.

Hesketh was on hand to bag a deserved goal to double Saints’ lead on 63 minutes.

Palace were caught hopelessly up the field as Saints broke. James Ward-Prowse played in Long, whose shot was saved by Hennessey. However, Hesketh was lurking just inside the area and rifled home a shot that gave the Palace keeper no chance.

Clearly full of confidence, he had another crack four minutes later but this was a simple stop for Hennessey.

Alan Pardew threw on Christian Benteke and Jason Puncheon in a bid to try and get back into the tie and, as you would expect, started to go more direct.

Alex McCarthy had to be alert to steal the ball off of Connor Wickham’s toe as he brought down a short header back from Jose Fonte.

But Saints stood firm and were rarely troubled.

Indeed, were it not for Hennessey they might have had another, but he kept out Nathan Redmond in the closing stages.

For Puel it might mean another fixture in yet another competition to come, but he won’t be complaining. From his point of view it was the perfect end to the perfect week.

EFL Cup round-up: Stoke lose again, West Ham leave it late to beat Accrington

Show/hide article…

Dimitri Payet rescued West Ham from more embarrassment with an injury-time free-kick to see off Accrington 1-0 in the EFL Cup.

The Hammers, reeling from four straight defeats in all competitions and amid a backdrop of discontent at their new stadium, were down to 10 men and heading for extra time against the Sky Bet League Two side.

Worse still, they were looking comfortably second best against a team 61 places below them in the League.

But Payet, on as a half-time substitute, spared their blushes with a trademark free-kick from 25 yards to send Slaven Bilic’s side through.

Stoke’s misery continued as Markus Henriksen’s late strike secured Hull a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at the Bet365 Stadium in the EFL Cup third round.

The Potters, on a four-match losing run in the Premier League and bottom of the table, had gone into this tie very much in need of a morale-boosting result.

And they appeared on their way to that when Marko Arnautovic cracked the ball home in the 24th minute to give them a deserved lead.

But they conceded against the run of play when Ryan Mason marked his first Hull start with a volleyed finish just before half-time.

And Mark Hughes’ men then, despite having been the better the team virtually throughout, ended up ruing missed opportunities as Tigers debutant Henriksen sent them crashing out, firing past Lee Grant in stoppage time.

Tammy Abraham netted a 90th-minute winner as Bristol City stunned Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage in the EFL Cup.

The victory sent the visitors into the fourth round for the first time since 1989, after the hosts missed a second-half penalty.

Paddy McNair scored twice and Patrick van Aanholt returned to action as Sunderland beat QPR 2-1 to reach the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Sandro put the home side in front on the hour with an impressive strike from just inside the area, after goalkeepers Matt Ingram and Jordan Pickford each made a number of fine saves in the first half.

McNair’s brace, though, was enough to see the Premier League side progress.

Van Aanholt played the full game after he was left out of Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday at the last minute due to the results of heart tests.

Charlie Austin scored his fourth goal in three games to send Southampton on their way to the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 2-0 home defeat of Crystal Palace.

The striker, recalled to Claude Puel’s team having scored the winning goal against Swansea on Sunday, gave Saints a first-half lead from the penalty spot in a timely statement to his manager.

He had been dropped despite his two finishes in last week’s 3-0 Europa League defeat of Sparta Prague securing their first win of the season and his first goals since January. The impressive Jake Hesketh added their second and his first senior goal in the second half to ensure victory.

Manchester City recorded their ninth successive win under Pep Guardiola by seeing off EFL Cup opponents Swansea 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium.

Captain Vincent Kompany played for the first time since a thigh injury suffered in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid in early May, but he went off in the dying seconds as second-half goals by Gael Clichy and Aleix Garcia proved enough.

Swansea, who have now gone four league and cup games without a victory, had their moments as two much-changed teams delivered an entertaining encounter in west Wales, with Gylfi Sigurdsson scoring during second-half injury time.

But the visitors had an extra touch of class about them - helped by second-half substitute Kevin de Bruyne’s introduction - as they moved into the last 16 three days before facing Swansea again, when Premier League points will be at stake.

Vincent Janssen showed there may be life after Harry Kane as the stand-in striker scored his first Tottenham goal in a 5-0 romp over Gillingham.

Janssen opened his account from the penalty spot after a Christian Eriksen double, before Joshua Onomah and Erik Lamela completed the rout to seal Spurs’ place in the EFL Cup fourth round.

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh was back at White Hart Lane for the first time since spending 10 years at the club as a player from 1990 to 2000, but it was an unhappy return as the League One side were outclassed from start to finish.

Kane’s ankle injury, sustained against Sunderland on Sunday, means Janssen is set for an extended run in the first team and the 22-year-old capped an industrious display with a well-deserved goal.

Southampton consider bid for PSG forward in January… Claude Puel has signed him before

Show/hide article…

The talented Frenchman has fallen out-of-favour with PSG boss Unai Emery, and has been excluded from their last three match-day squads. The 29-year-old winger, who arrived from Ligue 1 rivals Nice in July, made an impressive start to life at the Parc des Princes when netting on his debut.

“Claude Puel is keeping tabs on the situation” But after just a two-month spell, Ben Arfa is considering his options, the Mirror claim. Southampton could offer him an escape route in January, with manager Claude Puel keeping tabs on the situation. Puel, 55, is desperate to add some attacking flair to his squad, who have only managed to score four goals this season.

The French tactician was responsible for reviving Ben Arfa’s career after signing him for Nice as a free agent in January. And believes he can do the same again at St Mary’s when the winter transfer window opens.

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew questions penalty decision in EFL Cup

Show/hide article…

Alan Pardew has cast doubt over whether Southampton should have been awarded the penalty from which they scored the opening goal in their 2-0 EFL Cup defeat of Crystal Palace.

Charlie Austin scored from the penalty spot, after Martin Kelly’s first-half challenge on Shane Long, and Jake Hesketh added Southampton’s second in the 63rd minute to ensure their progress to the competition’s fourth round at Palace’s expense.

Southampton’s was a convincing performance – their former manager Pardew acknowledged they deserved victory – but after doubting the penalty decision the 55-year-old accused Long of having “history.”

Palace captain Scott Dann went off with a suspected hamstring injury in the 19th minute. Kelly replaced him in central defence, and his clumsy touch gifted Long possession before an equally poor challenge brought him down.

The decision appeared the correct one, but four days after Long was booked for simulation against Swansea, Pardew said: "Shane Long is quick and has got a bit of history in those situations.

"He was definitely going over, I know that, but the video I saw was inconclusive. The players felt it was a bit harsh but it was difficult to see unless you see it clearly on television.

"The best team won for sure. They were very sharp. Their passing and movement caused us problems.

"It is always a risk when you make a lot of changes and we had one or two players that looked a bit rusty.

“We didn’t have enough imagination to find a route to goal.”

That Dann had to be taken off three days after fellow central defender James Tomkins was substituted as a precaution will concern the manager.

He remains confident Tomkins will return for Saturday’s trip to Sunderland, but said of Dann: "We’ll have to wait and see [what his condition] is.

“It was his hamstring, I think. You can’t tell with hamstrings, you really can’t.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel, whose team will host Sunderland in the fourth round, defended Long and described Kelly’s challenge as “dangerous.”

He also praised the contributions of goalscorers Austin and Hesketh, 20, after the former had been recalled to the team and the latter scored his first ever senior goal in his first appearance since December 2014.

“It was dangerous the tackle by the defender,” said Puel. "I didn’t know in the second half if he could play. He took an important and dangerous tackle.

"It was a good performance from Hesketh, a fantastic second goal. He took his chance. It’s important to improve and develop.

"It was a quality that he showed at Under-23 level. It was good for me to give him the chance and [give us] solutions for the future.

“Austin wanted to shoot the penalty. It’s good for Charlie. He has confidence. All the players… Shane had a very good performance. It was a good dynamic for the squad.”

Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann undergoes scan on hamstring injury

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace captain Scott Dann was having scans today to determine the severity of the hamstring injury which forced him off at St Mary’s Stadium last night.

Dann limped off in the 18th minute of his 100th appearance for the club and is a major doubt to face Sunderland on Saturday.

His likely absence at the Stadium of Light will leave Palace short in defence, with James Tomkins also struggling with a knee injury. Manager Alan Pardew is optimistic Tomkins will be fit but, with Damien Delaney the only other recognised centre-half in the Palace squad, losing Dann would be big blow.

The 29-year-old is a key player for Palace and they struggled at St Mary’s after he went off.

His replacement, Martin Kelly, gave away a penalty in the 33rd minute that Charlie Austin converted to put Southampton ahead.

A disjointed Palace were repeatedly carved open and Jake Hesketh scored a second after 63 minutes on a disappointing night.

Defender Joel Ward said: “Scott is a massive player for us and has proven that week in and week out.

“He is an outstanding presence on the pitch. But we have quality throughout the squad and more than enough quality to come on and do well.

“It was a night that you have to quickly put to the back of your mind and put it right at the weekend.”

There were few positives for Pardew, who made eight changes for the game and rested Christian Benteke, Andros Townsend and Jason Puncheon, but Yohan Cabaye did return after nearly a month out with a groin injury.

Zeki Fryers made his first Palace appearance in two years and gives Palace another option at left-back while Pape Souare recovers from his car accident.

Southampton boss Puel hails youngsters after EFL Cup win over Palace

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel has heaped praise on his young players following Wednesday’s 2-0 League Cup win over Crystal Palace.

The St Mary’s chief says their emergence of a new batch of the youthful talent augurs well for the future of the south coast club.

After Charlie Austin scored the opener at St Mary’s Stadium, 20-year-old midfielder Jake Hesketh doubled Southampton’s lead as Puel’s side advanced to the fourth round.

Puel also selected three 21-year-olds for the match: midfielders Harrison Reed and James Ward-Prowse, and defender Matt Targett.

‘We changed the team for the start of the game and we saw other players produce a very good game, with quality on the ball and creating many chances,’ Puel told the club’s website.

'I think it is very interesting for the future and we can give also game-time for the young players like Reed or Hesketh.

‘This is important for us to develop and improve all these young players.’

Southampton, were drawn against Sunderland in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, play away at West Ham United in their next league fixture on Sunday.

The Saints sit 14th in the Premier League table with five points from their opening five games under new boss Puel.
