Ledley calls for Palace fringe players to grab first-team opportunity

Show/hide article…

Midfielder Joe Ledley claims the Crystal Palace players must make the most of their first-team opportunity if given a chance to feature in the EFL Cup tie at Southampton.

Eagles boss Alan Pardew has confirmed he will utilise the squad for the trip to St Mary’s Stadium, where he previously had a short spell as manager, winning the 2010 Football League Trophy final at Wembley.

Wales international Ledley was in the starting XI for Sunday’s 4-1 Premier League victory over Stoke, and stressed whichever team runs out against the Saints must give their all for the shirt.

‘It doesn’t matter who the gaffer puts out, you are going to represent Crystal Palace Football Club and you have to go and perform to the best possible standard that you can,’ he said.

'Obviously it is going to be difficult though because Southampton are a good team with a good squad and we will need to go there and perform.

‘We have played them a few times [in cups] and come out on top, but we don’t want to jinx that and we know it will be a hard game.’

Pardew admits he needs to give some of the players additional match time, not always easy in the hustle-and-bustle of regular Premier League action, with the win over Stoke making it two out of two for the Eagles after beating Middlesbrough away.

‘There will be a lot of changes for the League Cup game,’ the Palace manager said.

‘Of course, we want to win it but I want to see a few other players and I have got to rest the guys who played against Stoke for the weekend at Sunderland.’

Midfielder Yohan Cabaye has been working on his rehabiliation from a groin problem, so could feature if fully fit, along with the likes of Bakary Sako and forward Connor Wickham, who was on the bench against Stoke, but played the second half of the win over Blackpool in the previous EFL Cup tie.

Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey might also come back into contention, having seen Steve Mandanda take over between the posts for the past three matches.

‘I have definitely got to give some game time to some players on Wednesday, as we had a few players who missed pre-season, so they must play at a certain level,’ Pardew added.

Defender James Tomkins left Selhurst Park on crutches after the Stoke match and continues to be assessed.

COMMENT: Where does the League Cup feature in Claude Puel’s list of priorities?

Show/hide article…

So, where does the League Cup feature in Claude Puel’s list of priorities?

It should be fairly high up, but just how high up we will find out tonight.

This is why it should be fairly high up …

Back in the summer, I wrote in the Sports Pink what I believe would constitute a good first season for Puel.

A mid table Premier League finish, to qualify from their Europa League group - keeping the interest alive into the second half of the season with that one - and a good run in one of the domestic cups.

By ‘a good run’ I mean reaching the semi finals at least.

For Saints, the semi finals would certainly constitute a good run.

Since winning the FA Cup in 1976, Saints have only reached the semi finals of the world’s greatest club knockout competition twice - in 1986 and 2003.

Regarding the League Cup, Saints have only ever reached the semi finals of that tournament twice in over 50 years - in 1979 and 1987.

For a club who have spent all but 11 years competing in the top flight since 1966, that is a poor return to say the least.

The League Cup is probably Puel’s fourth priority after the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League.

But here is the rub - if offers the winners a shot at European football.

Can we realistically say Saints will finish in a high enough league position this season to qualify for Europe? If they do, Puel will have pulled off an achievement even better than his predecessor did. It is a phenomenal ask, though.

This much is true - Saints have a better chance of winning the League Cup than qualifying for Europe through their league position.

Can Saints afford NOT to take the League Cup seriously?

Well, yes, they can but they shouldn’t.

Under Ronald Koeman, Saints twice had a good chance of reaching the two-legged semi final stage.

In 2014/15, they were handed arguably the easiest draw in the competition - away to third division Sheffield United - and totally blew it, losing 1-0.

Saints were abject that night, and a great opportunity had been needlessly squandered.

Last season, Saints again reached the quarter finals. This time they were at home, albeit against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp didn’t field his strongest XI, but they still humiliated Saints - romping to a 6-1 win.

The likes of Birmingham and Swansea have won the League Cup in recent years, giving their fans a great day out at Wembley and some European nights.

Even Bradford City, a fourth division club at the time, reached the final in 2013.

If they can do it, why not Saints?

Saints fans have only ever had five visits to Wembley in the club’s entire history - two in 1976, the League Cup final three years later, the 1992 Zenith Data Systems final and the JPT final six years ago.

Again, that is not many for a club of Saints’ stature.

Of course we know the reasons why Puel might not field his strongest XI against Crystal Palace tonight.

The league has to be the priority and Saints have a good chance to build on their last two wins at struggling West Ham this weekend.

The following midweek there is a Europa League trip to Israel. If Saints can beat Hapoel Be’er Sheerva, they will be well on course to make the knockout stages.

Lots of opportunities for players to shine, therefore.

Puel isn’t short on options. He has already said he trusts his squad, and he certainly has a chance to prove that over the next few weeks.

All the players should be hungry.

A lot of them have been given a chance so far - 18 players have made a competitive start so far - and more chances will come.

Puel has already shown he is not scared of being handed a ‘tinkerman’ title.

It will be an intriguing contest tonight.

Alan Pardew is in the same boat as Puel in managing a club who are realistically not going to finish in the top six.

Crystal Palace’s best chance of European football is via the cups.

He took them seriously last season, as Palace reached the FA Cup final for only the second time ever.

The Eagles have never reached the League Cup final, and no doubt Pardew would love a return to Wembley.

We will find out tonight whether Puel or Pardew are taking the League Cup seriously.

Saints fans, if asked, would surely be happy with a League Cup final appearance in a few months’ time.

That is a gimme. No supporter would turn down the chance to watch their club in a Wembley final.

Yet would they want it at the expense of a decent Europa League run, or at the expense of the sort of Premier League finish they have got used to in the past three years?

That is the question, and it’s up to Puel and his squad to provide the answer.

Puel: League Cup is serious business for Saints

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel insists he will take the League Cup seriously, despite being in the midst of a fixture pile-up.

The Saints boss could be forgiven for thinking he could do without tonight’s tie against Crystal Palace at St Mary’s during a punishing run of games, and with a hat-trick of away matches, including a trip to Israel, just around the corner.

However, he insists his squad can deal with it and that he will make a late call on the fitness of his players with youngsters such as Harrison Reed and Lloyd Isgrove waiting for a chance to shine.

He said: “All the time for me it’s important to win, and to win in different competitions.

“I think it’s very important for the future with all the squad, all the players, to have a good participation.

“It’s important to improve these players, young players also, and to make progress together.

“I say that it’s important to keep an idea to improve all the players, and not just ten or 11 players.

“This for me is very important, and I think it’s not possible to play every three days.

“If we give some time of play for all the players they can improve, they can arrive with a good level and we can see a good squad and not just a team and for the future to answer with all these many games it’s interesting for the future.

“We will see the recovery of the players and the possibilities.

“All the time when I put the papers of the list of the players for many games I see also the recovery for every player and what is better for everyone.”

Puel confirmed that Jay Rodriguez won’t be fit to play after the striker picked up an injury during his goalscoring cameo against Sparta Prague.

“Jay, no. It is a little way off when he will come back. We will see for the other,” reported Puel. “It is important to keep a good physical for every player, a good energy also to play this game.

“I think, for example, if you start this game (against Swansea) with the same players that played Thursday we would have lost this game because for me it’s not possible.

“We don’t have for the moment the experience to play every three days because it’s a young squad, young players, and they learn together.

“It’s very interesting to play all these competitions with this squad.”

Although Charlie Austin’s strike sunk Swansea on Sunday to get the club’s first win of the season in the Premier League, Saints spurned numerous chances in the 1-0 win.

Nathan Redmond was guilty of missing a few big chances, but Oriol Romeu isn’t worried about his team-mates finishing skills.

“I think the problem would be if we’re not creating chances,” he said. “We are creating and we believe in our strikers that they are going to score a lot of goals.

“Against Swansea we missed a few clear chances, but that is not something we should be worried about or we will have a problem with in the future.

“Goals will come as long as we have chances.”

The Spaniard is relieved, however, to have Austin firing on all cylinders after netting three goals in two games.

“To have him feeling good to score is very good news for the team,” he said.

“Because he’s back among the goals we just want to make him feel happy and to get more goals from him.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel targets third straight win in EFL Cup

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel wants to progress in the EFL Cup despite the strain it will put on his squad.

Saints kick-started their season last week with victory in the Europa League over Sparta Prague before registering Puel’s maiden Premier League success against Swansea on Sunday.

And the Frenchman wants to make it three wins in a row, and stay in another competition, when Crystal Palace arrive on the south coast on Wednesday night.

Nevertheless, Puel will again rotate his squad with youngsters such as midfield duo Harrison Reed and Lloyd Isgrove set to be involved.

‘All the time for me it’s important to win, and to win in different competitions, because I think it is very important for the future,’ he said.

'All the squad, all the players can have some participation, to improve the young players and also to make progress.

'It’s important to keep the idea to improve all the players, not just 10 or 11.

'It’s not possible to play three games in a week so if we give some time to all the players who can improve and arrive with this group then we can see a good squad, not just for today, but for the future.

'If we’d started Sunday with the same players on Thursday we would have lost the game.

‘We have a squad of young players and they can learn together, so it’s is very interesting to play all these competitions with this squad.’

Charlie Austin was frustrated to start on the bench against the Swans after scoring twice against Sparta - although he came on to hit the winner - and Puel insists his players are buying into the rotation policy.

‘I think now my players understand the philosophy and the possibilities to change because we can keep good results, good solutions, good football and to win all the games in all the competitions,’ he added.

‘It’s very important for the squad to play many games. It’s hard but a very good challenge for all the squad. We have different players who can do good work.’

Midfielder Joe Ledley claims the Crystal Palace players must make the most of their first-team opportunity if given a chance to feature at Southampton.

Eagles boss Alan Pardew has confirmed he will utilise the squad for the trip to St Mary’s Stadium, where he previously had a short spell as manager, winning the 2010 Football League Trophy final at Wembley.
