Show/hide article…

Diego Costa, Kevin De Bruyne and Jordan Pickford make Matt Le Tissier’s best Premier League XI so far

We challenged Matt Le Tissier to pick his best XI from the opening five games of the Premier League season.

Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho are included from early league leaders Manchester City, while top goalscorers Diego Costa and Michail Antonio also get the nod.

Etienne Capoue, who is the Sky Sports Fantasy Football leading scorer with 53 points, joins them alongside some less obvious picks.

Sunderland may be second from bottom but it’s certainly not the fault of this kid, who has made 20 saves in three starts.

There’s not really an outstanding candidate at right-back but Walker has been solid and has a couple of assists.

I’m always impressed every time I see him and he helped the Saints record their first clean sheet on Sunday. He makes the simple things look effortless.

I’ve barely seen him put a foot wrong and he always looks a threat from set-pieces. The Belgian international has only continued to improve after really impressing at St Mary’s.

He’s had a good start to the season. I think it makes a massive difference to Everton having their full-backs fit, with Seamus Coleman also back.

He may not get the headlines but he’s the guy that allows all the talented players to go and play their games.

It’s been an incredible start to the season for him with five goals, including four headers. He gets himself in great positions and is probably the only shining light for West Ham this season.

Walter Mazzarri has played him in a more advanced position and he is answering the main criticism of Watford last season, when their midfield struggled to chip in with goals.

In terms of the best Premier League players, he’s got to be up there as number one. His all-round play and weight of pass have been fantastic and the ball for Ilkay Gundogan’s goal just summed him up.

I thought his days might have been numbered in the Premier League and he may have already been booked three times, but he’s scored five in five so has to make my team.

With three goals and two assists, Raheem Sterling is unlucky not to make my XI, but Mane has just a little bit more end product and seems more in control of himself. Liverpool look like title contenders going forward with Mane in their attack, but failing to keep a clean sheet tells a different story.

Watch Man Utd v Leicester, the Ryder Cup and the EFL Cup as part of our three months’ half-price offer.

Your guide to the EFL Cup third round: We pick the ties of the round, potential upsets and the players to watch

Show/hide article…

Okay, so both Claudio Ranieri and Antonio Conte are likely to rest a number of first-team players, but that’s precisely why this is such an intriguing cup tie.

Both managers invested heavily this transfer window, and they could field a number of their new signings in this match. Leicester fans will be eager to see the likes of Bartosz Kapustka and Ahmed Musa handed starts, while Michy Batshuayi will surely be handed a start for Chelsea after scoring a brace in the previous round.

Newcastle thrashed QPR 6-0 the other night — and away from home at that. Wolves meanwhile went and lost 4-0 at home to Barnsley last Tuesday. So few were expecting Wolves to be the team to end Newcastle’s five-match winning streak when they met at St James’ Park on Saturday. But Wolves were brilliant, winning 2-0 thanks to a Chancel Mbemba own-goal and cool Helder Costa finish. Now they need to do it all over again.

Are Manchester United the LAZIEST side in the Premier League?

Show/hide article…

Manchester United drove into training on Tuesday morning feeling they strain as they looked to get back on track after a run of three straight defeats.

Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind and Michael Carrick arrived at the AON training complex in Carrington as United prepared for the EFL Cup trip to Northampton on Wednesday.

After a disappointing run that has seen them fall six points behind Manchester City, Jose Mourinho will be looking to find reasons for United’s loss of form.

Is it a case of tactical systems, players not performing, or simply the fact that with four new signings his team need time to knit together?

Or perhaps they just aren’t running enough.

According to a league table of the distance covered by every Premier League side, United are the laziest side in the division, running less far than every other side.

In fact, over the last five games United’s squad have covered exactly 55 kilometres less than rivals Liverpool - enough for them to get to Anfield from Old Trafford.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have run the furthest in the league, a remarkable 11km more than the next best, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, with Tottenham in third.

Premier League new-boys Burnley are next up, just 2km behind Spurs, with Tony Pulis’ West Brom, who beat West Ham 4-2 last weekend with only 30 per cent of possession, in fifth.

It’s not all about running stats though. Everton have had a brilliant start to life under Ronald Koeman, and are second in the table, but have only run the 12th furthest, while Chelsea, in fifth, are 40km short of Liverpool’s distance and are down in 14th.

However, David Moyes will not be pleased to see that his Sunderland outfit, who are yet to win and surely need to be showing every sign of great effort to get out of a relegation scrap yet again, are 19th in both the league table and the running stats.

Hull, who have played the same starting XI in each of their five games so far, also seem to be showing signs of struggling to keep up the pace, languishing in 17th - but they have still covered almost 10km more than United.

It comes as Mourinho admits his players are feeling the pressure of their losing streak.

Speaking in The Mirror he said: 'At 10.30 in the morning, we have a training session and we have to be there. They have to work.

'They have to show themselves with a certain kind of attitude towards negative moments.

'I show them, as an example, Ashley Young who was, in my opinion phenomenal with his attitude, positivity and determination.

‘We need positive people to give us a positive feeling because next time these boys are going onto a football pitch they are going to feel, obviously as normal human beings, the weight of the defeats.’

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne tops ’ Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings this week.

The 25-year-old had a hand in all of the goals during City’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth, scoring with a cheeky free-kick under the Cherries’ wall and assisting Ilkay Gündogan on his debut.

Following the Belgian’s blistering start to the season, Citizens boss Pep Guardiola said: “When we talk about Messi, maybe he can sit alone in the table, with no-one else allowed. But in the table beside, Kevin can sit there.”

Team-mates Raheem Sterling (No 3, up four places) and Kelechi Iheanacho (No 9, up 34 places) also got on the scoresheet and assisted goals on Saturday. Iheanacho continued his incredible goal ratio after replacing the suspended Sergio Aguero to score his tenth Premier League goal from just 14 shots on target.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku rose one place to No 2 this week, scoring in his second successive league game during their 3-1 win over Middlesbrough at Goodison Park. Toffee’s captain Gareth Barry also netted to celebrate his 600th Premier League appearance, rising seven places to No 8.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (No 4, up 37 places) staked his own claim of being equal to Lionel Messi after weaving and striking through a crowded goal-mouth during the Gunners’ 4-1 win over Hull.

Last week’s chart-topper Diego Costa dropped five places to No 6, netting his fifth league goal this campaign as the Blues lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Friday Night Football - despite only taking 37 touches in the entire game.

Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann (No 5, up 19 places) scored during the Eagles’ 4-1 demolition of Stoke, and Watford’s Etienne Capoue (No 7, up 12 places) notched his fourth goal of the season to help down Manchester United 3-1.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane (No 10, up 37 places) continued his ascent up the Power Rankings table, breaking into the top 10 for the first time this campaign after finally breaking Sunderland’s resolve with a tap-in on Super Sunday.

West Brom’s Nacer Chadli (No 58, up 263 places) and Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson (No 15, up 75 places) were among matchday five’s top performers, with a brace and wonder goal, respectively. Meanwhile, Leicester’s Islam Slimani stormed to No 61 after bagging two on his debut.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance by awarding points to players for 32 different matchday stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings and your club’s top points scorer. The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every Tuesday during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…
