Southampton boss Claude Puel can’t guarantee Charlie Austin place in team

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel refused to guarantee Charlie Austin would retain his place despite his two goals inspiring their 3-0 defeat of Sparta Prague.

The striker was Southampton’s most influential player as they began their Europa League campaign with a convincing victory. He scored twice, having won the penalty from which he gave them the lead and also had a header ruled out for offside.

His movement and partnership with Shane Long also impressed in only his second start of the season. Despite him being among seven changes to the team that lost 2-1 at Arsenal on Saturday, however, Puel did not say he had done enough to remain in his starting XI when Southampton host Swansea on Sunday.

Asked if Austin had taken his chance, Puel – who had overseen his first win as the club’s manager – responded: "We cannot just think of 11 players. We have got to play every three days [throughout] September, October, November. It’s not possible to have the same team.

"A good squad, a good team, is many players. It’s important to keep an identity of the [way we] play and we can change the players because it’s a collective.

"This is very important for all the players and it’s not important for me what players start.’’

After winning the fifth-minute penalty, Austin argued with Dusan Tadic over who would take it before scoring his first goal since January to give them the lead.

"We can say it’s an anecdote,’’ said Puel, whose team top Group K after one game. "I’m not sure what the players must do but the most important is to put the ball in the goal and this was important for the team.

"I can say I am happy to have a penalty for us because three penalties against us in the first four in the Premier League was very hard for my players.

"They can discuss together; if all the time you put the ball in the goal it’s okay. For me it’s not important.’’

Sparta manager Zdenek Scasny, whose task in leading his side into the competition’s knockout stages already looks difficult after Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s 2-0 win at Inter Milan, insisted the gulf in quality between the two teams was too big to overcome.

"[The early goal] certainly didn’t help us but I must admit that the Saints were an aggressive, good team,’’ he said. "Our loss was justified.

"If you compare the quality of the English league and the Czech league, it’s a different level. The English league is very high quality.

"The quality of the home team was really strong. They have really great players. Against an opponent like Southampton, it doesn’t matter what tactic you choose.

"Southampton played a really good game. I saw their last few matches. The reason why it was like this was they scored the first goal, compared to games against Sunderland and Watford. They scored first, and then had a lot of chances.’’

Inter suffer shock defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva

Show/hide article…

Inter Milan suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva at the San Siro in the other match in Saints’ Europa League group.

The Israeli side stunned Group K favourites Inter with goals in the second half from Miguel Vitor and Maor Buzaglo.

Inter left £100m worth of talent out of their Europa League squad and rested many of their first team stars for the game against Be’er Sehva.

Saints face a trip to Hapoel Be’er Sheva next and know victory in Israel would leave them in a fantastic position to make it through to the knockout stages with the double header against Inter then to come.

Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Puel finally gets his reward

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel felt Saints finally got their reward as they delivered a first victory of his managerial reign.

Saints soundly beat Sparta Prague 3-0 at St Mary’s to start their Europa League campaign with a bang and get Puel really up and running as Saints boss.

After four games without a victory at the start of the season it was a welcome relief for all concerned.

Puel said: “It’s good. I enjoy for my players of course because we weren’t rewarded last time.

“It was an important win with good football and good play against a good team also.

“I think it’s a very good performance from my players, and I think also it was important to see the quality of all the squad for the next games.

“We can see many good players and this is very important for the confidence of the next game.”

Puel promised rotation of his squad and duly changed seven players for the tie against Sparta, including three of his first choice back four.

The performance of those that came in was a major plus point for the manager.

“For me it was very important to consider the two games,” said Puel. “Against Swansea this game arrives quick with just two days off after tonight.

“It’s very hard and difficult and we didn’t take a risk because I have important confidence in my players and the squad.

“I am sure we had good players and we can see this and for all the squad I think it’s important to consider it and to see all the young players, but very good players. This is interesting for the future.”

One of the changes Puel made was to bring in Charlie Austin who scored twice, including a penalty after a dispute with Dusan Tadic over who would take it, an incident the Saints boss laughed off.

“It’s an anecdote,” smiled Puel. “They can discuss together if all the time you put the ball in the goal it’s ok.

“We can see this with calm tomorrow.

“For me it’s not important, it’s an anecdote.”

He added: “It’s important for Charlie to score and also for Jay Rodriguez. Shane can do a very good game also and give an assist for Rodriguez.

“I think it’s important for all the offensive players to find a solution and to score for the beginning and the first game in the Premier League we had many chances but no efficient. It was not sufficient for us.

“Now this is important to win 3-0 and with a good offensive play.

“I think all the squad do a very good performance.”

The win puts Saints top of the Group K table, with Inter Milan suffering a shock defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the other fixture, a result which Puel admitted was not ideal for his side.

“I would prefer perhaps Inter win this game because now we can see a group with a good balance and it is difficult every game,” confessed Puel.

“The next game in Israel is very strong.”

Charlie Austin not guaranteed Southampton start despite Europa League double, says Claude Puel

Honoured captain Van Dijk hails “perfect” night for Saints

Show/hide article…

PROUD captain Virgil van Dijk announced that the 3-0 Europa League victory over Sparta Prague was the “perfect” night for Saints after their recent struggles – and urged his team to build on the result.

In the absence of usual skipper Jose Fonte, who was on the bench as Claude Puel rotated his squad, the Dutch central defender took the armband, which he labelled “a great honour”, writes Peter Howard.

Van Dijk was elated after the triumph and wants Saints now to build some momentum by recording their first Premier League victory of the season against Swansea on Sunday.

“It feels great,” the 25-year-old said after the Sparta win, in which Charlie Austin netted a brace and Jay Rodriguez grabbed his second of the season. “It’s the first win of the season and we fully deserved it.

“I think three goals at home, a clean sheet is the perfect night for us and hopefully we can build on this now,” he added.

On taking the captain’s armband, he said: “It’s an honour to lead my team out and I’m very proud to be captain of Southampton today and I’m glad we had the win.”

After getting their Europa League campaign off to a flying start, Saints will now look to get his first victory in the league on Sunday.

“Yes, for sure, we were working hard, we were a bit unlucky with the results but today we showed a great game and great goals, so I’m very happy,” Van Dijk said when asked if it was a relief to get their first win of the season.

The former Celtic defender reckons it is vital to build on the confidence and momentum that the Sparta result breathes into the team “It’s very important,” he stated.

“We can build on this and take the momentum with us and it’s going to be a very tough game, they did well against Chelsea last weekend, so we need to be up for it.

“But if we play like we did today, we have a good chance.”

He continued: “It takes a bit of time, but today we played a great game. We scored three great goals and that’s the key. It was a great night for the club and we need to take this with us and get a win this Sunday.”

THE VERDICT: Puel up and running at last

Show/hide article…

Saints’ season is officially up and running.

Sometimes in football you just need a win, other times a big performance.

Claude Puel must have felt as if he required both against Sparta Prague as Saints started their Europa League campaign at St Mary’s.

It has been a very scratchy start to the campaign.

While defeats away to Manchester United and Arsenal are nothing to be ashamed of, home draws against Watford and Sunderland were a long way from what a new manager would want.

Those results really piled the pressure on to this week.

Two very winnable looking home matches had to deliver victories.

The first of those was against Sparta last night.

Puel was as a good as his word and rotated his squad with seven changes to the starting line-up, proving he really does have the faith in the depth of his talent pool that he has claimed.

Saints were undoubtedly the better team throughout but got a leg up to help them on the way, with some generous refereeing – you might say they had earned that – and Sparta’s team selection.

The talk from those in the know in the build-up was that the Europa League was very much a secondary consideration for them this season, as they target winning the Czech title and returning to the lucrative Champions League.

With Inter Milan leaving out star names from their squad, and getting beaten at the San Siro by minnows Hapoel Beer Sheva, it looks a group that Saints can very much get out of.

However, above all else, and before Swansea visit for what is a great opportunity for a first Premier League win for Puel, Saints needed to generate some momentum behind them.

Though the atmosphere for this game didn’t feel quite as magical as the Vitesse Arnhem fixture where it all started for Saints in this competition last season, there was still an air of expectancy and anticipation around St Mary’s.

Saints started by looking to keep possession and draw out a Sparta team who had made little secret of the fact they intended to get men behind the ball and defend deep.

Puel’s men quickly realised they needn’t worry too much about that, they were so comfortably superior.

They got off to the perfect start, albeit in somewhat surreal circumstances.

Charlie Austin pinged in a cross from the right by-line that was blocked by the sliding Costa.

Everybody lined up for the corner after appeals for handball were initially turned down, before the referee then pointed to the spot.

It was very harsh having been hit at Costa from such close range but nevertheless Saints weren’t complaining.

Dusan Tadic and Austin had a rather strong and unseemly disagreement over who was going to take it before captain Virgil van Dijk got involved, dragging the Serbian away, and allowing Austin the chance to duly bury the penalty in the bottom corner.

Van Dijk might have scored himself six minutes later but headed over from six yards out before Austin forced Tomas Koubek into a near post save and later had a header that did hit the back of the net but was correctly chalked out for offside.

There was no stopping Austin on 27 minutes though as Martina broke down the right and, after a quick one-two and an initial blocked cross, produced a beautiful weighted ball that invited Austin to head back across goal and in, which he did via the fingertips of Koubek.

For their part, Sparta never really created anything in the first half that greatly threatened Fraser Forster.

Saints got out of the blocks quickly again in the second period, and Tadic forced Koubek into a save as he cut in from the right and hit a low left footed shot.

From there the match rather bimbled along.

Saints were comfortable in possession, but not moving it forward as quickly as they were prepared to in the first half, where a mix and match style had seem some direct balls that had played to Austin’s strengths.

Sparta brought on their prolific veteran striker David Lafata. He showed his class with a fiercely struck drive from just outside the area on 68 minutes which forced Forster into a first meaningful save of the night.

As the game coasted towards a close, and with Sparta unable to breach a tight Saints defensive unit, the result was only heading one way.

Saints had a late penalty shout waved away as Maya Yoshida went down in the area, but it was never likely to make a difference to the way the points were going.

They did get a third to round things off in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Sub Jay Rodriguez started the move, passing to Steven Davis and breaking forward. He played it outside to Long who squared in the area to Rodriguez. The striker brilliantly opened up his body and finished right footed into the opposite bottom corner for 3-0.

Saints got the win and the performance that Puel so needed, and, though there is still a way to go, they are in a strong position to get through the group.

A win against Swansea in just a couple of days, which will surely lift Saints into midtable in the Premier League, and things will suddenly have taken on a very different look in a very short space of time.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba feature in Google Trends

Show/hide article…

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the most Googled Premier League player this year.

The 34-year-old was the most popular player in 36 out of 120 countries where sufficient data was available up to mid-August, according to Google Trends.

Ibrahimovic topped the charts in Russia and dominated large swathes of Scandinavia, Asia and the Middle East. He also topped France - the home nation of the second-most searched player, Paul Pogba.

Pogba signed for United from Juventus for a world record fee of £93.25m in August and was the most popular player in 29 countries, including Canada, Australia and several African nations.

Some way behind the United duo were Chelsea’s Pedro (seven countries), Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (five) and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (three).

Vardy was most popular in the United Kingdom, as well as in Cyprus, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Zimbabwe and Bermuda.

Bojan Krkic, Ramadan Sobhi, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero and Xherdan Shaqiri all topped two countries apiece, while another 29 players claimed one each.

Besides Vardy, four other English players dominated territories outside the UK: Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling topped the USA, Manchester United’s Michael Carrick in the Gambia, Chelsea’s John Terry in Taiwan and Tottenham’s Dele Alli in Jersey.

Other Premier League stars that proved surprise favourites in faraway lands included Phillipe Coutinho in Zambia, Juan Mata in Thailand, Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Somalia and Adnan Januzaj in Swaziland.

Austin not certain to keep Saints place despite Europa League brace

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin could lose his place in Southampton’s starting XI despite his two goals inspiring their 3-0 Europa League defeat of Sparta Prague.

The striker was the Saints’ most influential player as they began their European campaign with a convincing victory.

The former Burnley and QPR favourite scored twice, having won the penalty from which he gave them the lead, and also had a header ruled out for offside.

His movement and partnership with Shane Long also impressed in only his second start of the season.

Despite Austin being among seven changes to the team that lost 2-1 at Arsenal on Saturday, however, manager Claude Puel refused to guarantee he would start again when Southampton host Swansea on Sunday.
