Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Austin at the double in Saints win

Show/hide article…

Not even a row about the penalty taker could mar Southampton’s first win of the season, their first under new manager Claude Puel and a first of their Europa League campaign against Sparta Prague.

Charlie Austin has been accused of having no ligaments in his knee and a terrible fitness record, but what he does have is a stubborn head and one that is excellent for diverting crosses into the back of the net. The 27-year-old has struggled to stay free of injury since he joined the club, but right now he looks lean and mean and if Puel can keep him that way then the £4million they paid Queens Park Rangers for him in January will be a steal.

Had Austin missed the spot kick that Dusan Tadic tried to nick off him then Southampton’s disappointing start to the season under their new manager could have descended further. Instead, he kept his head and by the end, when he had added a second and substitute Jay Rodriguez a third, earned Southampton a vital first victory of the season.

‘I’m a centre forward and I think I should take the penalties,’ Austin said. ‘I was feeling confident. It was a bit silly from me and Dusan but in future I’ll take the penalties.’

England rugby head coach Eddie Jones visited Southampton’s Staplewood training ground ahead of the match to exchange good practice with Puel, and Virgil van Dijk must have been eavesdropping judging by the way he manhandled Tadic out of the penalty box to allow Austin to take the spot kick on five minutes.

Austin won the penalty with a run down the right flank and a low cross into the area which referee Manuel Grafe deemed to hit defender Costa’s hand as he flung himself to the ground to block.

A soft penalty, but Austin took a hard approach to who was going to take it — him — and ignored Tadic’s protests to tuck the ball into the bottom left corner.

‘I’m not sure what the players said,’ Puel said. ‘The most important thing tonight is to get the goal and it was important for the team.

'Just can I say it was good to get a penalty for us, three were against us in the Premier League in four games. The players can discuss it together. It’s a goal, so it’s OK. We will see about this tomorrow, for me it’s not important.’

Austin is one of those eternally confident strikers. He had not scored since his debut goal against Manchester United in January but had no qualms brushing his team-mate aside.

The strike seemed to give him back that goalscorer’s edge and he could have had a hat-trick by 27 minutes, but had to settle for two instead. On 26 minutes he had a diving header ruled out for a marginal offside and 60 seconds later he had his second, leaping to meet Cuco Martina’s poked cross from the right to head into the bottom right of goal. 303 minutes without a goal, then two in 27.

Rodriguez finished the match off in stoppage time, coming from the bench with 15 minutes remaining and side-footing in at the end of a passing move.

‘We are Southampton, we come from League One,’ the home fans chanted and it is sometimes easy to forget this south coast club were in the third tier of English football only five years ago, not a side challenging for successive seasons in Europe and whose former players populate the elite top-flight clubs and the England national team.

Nor one outclassing Czech opponents who once graced the Champions League semi-finals, or who will come up against European giants Inter Milan next month. Hopefully they have sorted out who is on penalties by then.

Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Saints start Europa League campaign in style

Show/hide article…

Southampton started their Europa League camapign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Group K opponents Sparta Prague.

A first-half brace from Charlie Austin put the Saints in the driving seat, before Jay Rodriguez netted in the dying stages to round off the win.

Within five minutes, the hosts had taken the lead.

Charlie Austin rolled a penalty into the back of the net after the striker’s attempted cross was adjudged to have been handled by Costa Nhamoinesu - despite the defender being literally inches away from the striker.

The goal did not dampen Sparta’s spirits, and they started the game well.

Some nice passing passages forced the Saints’ defence to remain on top form, but the same could not be said of the visitors’ back-line - which was breached twice in quick succession.

Austin had the ball in the net again, crashing a header home after 25 minutes, although it was correctly disallowed for offside.

But, less than two minutes later, the English forward did score with his header, converting Cuco Martina’s delightful cross to double the lead.

Martina then sent another great ball forward, curling a 40-yard delivery into the path of Shane Long. However, the forward failed to connect and the keeper gratefully gathered.

Heading into the break with the two-goal cushion, the Saints had no real need to attack, and it was clear they had taken their foot off the pedal in the early stages of the second period.

Puel had clearly instructed his players to ease off ahead of their Premier League fixture this weekend, and the game entered a lull during which time possession was focused around the midfield zone.

Vaclav Kadlec did manage one chance which was blocked by Virgil van Dijk, before Fraser Forster saved David Lafata’s long-range attempt.

But the Saints kept their clean sheet intact, and Rodriguez rounded off a lovely team move in the dying stages to extend the lead and end the game in perfect fashion.

Southampton 3 Sparta Prague 0: Charlie Austin double helps secure easy Europa League win

Show/hide article…

It was hard here to know whether the relief of Claude Puel or Charlie Austin was greater. It was a first Southampton win at the fifth attempt for Puel but the foundation for this 3-0 victory was provided by Austin’s first goals since January.

Austin’s determination to end that drought over-spilled in somewhat comedic fashion in the fifth minute however when, having won a penalty, he ended up in a tug-of-war with Dusan Tadic over who should have the spot-kick.

Austin was ultimately unrepentant and Puel said that the two players would work it all when they next see each other in training. “I’m a centre forward and I think I should take the penalties,” said Austin.

“I was feeling confident. It was a bit silly from me and Dusan but in future I’ll take the penalties.”

Puel’s European experience had been one of his keys to his summer appointment and, having overseen Lyon’s run to the semi-finals of the 2010 Champions League, another lengthy European adventure already beckons.

Charlie Austin bags a brace as Saints cruise to victory in European opener

Show/hide article…

A brace from Charlie Austin gave Claude Puel his first win as Southampton manager and the Saints a perfect start to their Europa League campaign.

Austin’s first half goals against Sparta Prague, his first for the club in 303 minutes since coming off the bench to score the winner with almost his first touch at Old Trafford last season, saw the Premier League club run out worthy winners against their Czech counterparts.

The night began perfectly for Puel with Saints one up inside five minutes.

Manuel Grafe had turned down Charlie Austin’s appeal for a penalty after the ball had struck Costa’s arm but the official behind the goal indicated the offence and Southampton had their chance.

After stand-in captain Virgil Van Dijk had hauled an unhappy Dusan Tadic away from the penalty, Austin confidently stroked the ball to the goalkeeper’s right to give Saints the edge.

Puel’s men seemed desperate to make the most of their maiden voyage into the group stages of this competition and both Van Dijk and Austin came close to extending their lead in the first 20 minutes.

Puel, who reached the semi-finals of the Champions League when Lyon manager in 2010, had made seven changes to the side which lost to a last minute Santi Cazorla penalty at Arsenal on Saturday but Sparta did not prove stiff opposition.

The Czechs have had success in the Europa League, reaching the quarter-final last season where they were beaten by Villarreal, but their record against English sides is poor.

Their night almost got worse as Austin stooped to head in Cuco Martina’s cross but the linesman adjudged him offside. Moments later though, the same pair combined and this time Austin found space at the far post to head back across goal via Tomas Koubak’s left-hand and put Southampton two up.

Martina was causing huge problems down Sparta’s left and his superb curled pass almost let in Shane Long for a third but the ball just evaded the Irishman’s outstretched leg.

It didn’t make for much of a spectacle but Puel, who favours a patient, possession-based approach, will have been pleased with the way his players killed the game in the second half.

Despite the introduction of talismanic striker David Lafata at half-time, Prague were afforded no opportunities by a Southampton defence well-marshalled by former Celtic player Van Dijk.

Their only opening came when Matt Targett and James Ward-Prowse lost possession in midfield to allow Lafata a fierce drive at goal which Fraser Forster pushed to his right.

But the occasion, if not the game, was one to remember for Southampton who have been on an irrepressible rise over the past seven seasons: ‘we are Southampton, we’ve come from League One,’ sang their supporters.

Their night was completed with a third goal as substitute Jay Rodriguez converted Long’s pass into the bottom right corner from six yards out.

Providing Puel can take this type of form into Southampton’s stuttering Premier League beginning, it could yet be another memorable campaign on the South Coast.

Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Charlie Austin at the double in win

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin netted twice as Southampton earned a 3-0 victory over Sparta Prague on their Europa League debut.

Austin opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the fifth minute, after he wrestled the ball off of regular taker Dusan Tadic, angering the Serbia international, before sweeping the ball home.

Austin looked like a man rejuvenated, and nodded home a second on 27 minutes to make sure of three points for Saints, before Jay Rodriguez added a late third.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s shock 2-0 win at the San Siro against Inter Milan means Saints top Group K after the first round of games, and such an evening could really kick-start Saints’ season.

There was incredible drama in the early stages as German referee Manuel Grafe pointed to the spot after consulting his linesman. Costa Nhamoinesu was the man penalised for handball, although it seemed harsh on the defender as neither Saints players nor fans appealed for a decision.

Tadic took the ball and started to walk towards the spot as normal, but Austin had other ideas, and demanded the ball. Captain Virgil van Dijk had to restrain the clearly animated Tadic, allowing Austin to step up, and he made no mistake.

All was forgiven in celebrations, and the good feeling continued in the 25th minute as Austin had the ball in the net again, but it was ruled out for offside.

Austin was not to be outdone two minutes later, though, as the same combination that had just been denied teamed up to double Saints’ advantage. Cuco Martina managed to get the cross into the box at the second attempt, right onto the head of Austin, who steered the ball expertly into the bottom corner.

Lukas Julis had a great opportunity four minutes later to get Sparta back in it, but he lashed the ball over the top from a good position.

David Lafata forced a fine save from a previously dormant Fraser Forster mid-way through the second half as Sparta pressed, but they offered very little as an attacking force. In fact, for the first time since December 2014, Sparta have failed to score in the Europa League - a run of 12 games.

Maya Yoshida was denied a penalty when he appeared to be pushed, before Rodriguez coolly slotted home in stoppage time after Shane Long had laid the ball perfectly into his path.

The night belongs to Austin, though. The 27-year-old has scored on both his Premier League and Europa League debuts, and looks back to his predatory best.

Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Charlie Austin nets twice in Saints cruise

Show/hide article…

Southampton are finally motoring under Claude Puel – thanks to Charlie Austin.

On a night when two long waits ended, Austin scored twice to secure Southampton’s first win under new boss Puel at the fifth attempt and get their Europa League group stage campaign off to a flier.

Southampton were dumped out of this competition by Danes Midtjylland in the final play-off round last season.

But they bounced back in the Europa League against Czech’s Sparta Prague after Austin’s double and a late strike from Jay Rodriguez.

Austin scored with his first touch in a Southampton shirt against Manchester United in January following his £4m move from QPR but had failed to find the net in 303 minutes since.

But in just 27 minutes at St Mary’s he trebled his Southampton goal tally to justify Puel’s decision to recall him.

His first came from the spot after another Southampton penalty row – though at least this time it was for one of they were awarded.

Southampton have been in a spot of bother over penalties this season, conceding three already compared to the one they gave away last season. The last of those was a controversial one at Arsenal on Saturday that sent them to a late defeat.

Last night the debate was only about who would take the one they were awarded and Austin won the battle with regular taker Dusan Tadic to open the scoring before adding a second before the break.

It was the ideal start to Group K for Puel, an experienced european campaigner with a Champions League semi-final and Intertoto Cup win on his CV, and helped ease the worries over their early season form.

Sparta Prague are European regulars and reached the quarter-finals of this competition last season.

But their record against English sides was one that gave Southampton hope of notching a first win of the season.

The Czech’s had not beaten an English top-flight side in their previous 14 attempts, losing 10 times, with their last victory coming against Watford in 1983.

Puel shuffled his pack again in pursuit of the winning formula, making seven changes, and one of the new faces handed Southampton a perfect start in the fifth minute.

Austin saw his cross hit the arm of sliding Sparta defender Costa and, after the officials got their heads together, referee Manuel Grafe eventually pointed to the spot.

There was another delay as Austin and Dusan Tadic argued over who should take the kick.

Captain Virgil Van Dijk pulled rank to ensure Austin took it and the striker didn’t let his skipper down by cooly converting before kissing and making up with Tadic.

Van Dijk then headed over and Austin was denied a second firstly by keeper Tomas Koubek and then a close offside call when his header from Martina’s cross was chalked off.

But just two minutes later the duo combined again and this time Austin got his timing right to nod in Martina’s stabbed centre.

Southampton were well in control but still had to be on their toes to avoid giving Sparta hope.

The visitors failed to make the most of the promising situations they created before the break. The second half introduction of danger man David Lafata gave them a bit more cutting edge.

Fraser Forster, a spectator for the first 66 minutes, had to be alert to beat away a thumping half-volley from the prolific veteran striker.

But Saints were not finished and Long crossed for Jay Rodriguez to side-foot home in the 92nd minute.

Sparta Prague fans clash with police during defeat to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Sparta Prague fans clashed with police during their side’s Europa League defeat to Southampton.

Claude Puel’s men ran out comfortable winners at St. Mary’s as Charlie Austin scored twice before Jay Rodriguez’s late strike.

It was a disappointing trip for Sparta , who were without veteran Tomas Rosicky after his return to his former club.

And their fans vented their frustration during the second-half as they clashed with police.

Topless supporters appeared to be trying to enter the home section of St. Mary’s before being forced back by police.

The measures appeared to be effective as the visiting fans remained in their allocated section.

The defeat continues Sparta’s disappointing run on English soil having failed to win since beating Watford in 1983.

Thursday’s other Group K clash saw Hapoel Be’er Sheva beat Inter Milan 2-0 at the San Siro.

Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Puel up and running with Europa League win

Show/hide article…

Southampton made a winning start to their Europa League campaign and gave Claude Puel his first win as manager with a convincing 3-0 defeat of Sparta Prague.

They remain in pursuit of their first Premier League victory of the season but demonstrated their potential with a fine performance at St Mary’s to take first place in Group K.

Puel made seven changes to the team that on Saturday lost 2-1 at Arsenal, suggesting he does not consider the competition as important as he insisted when speaking on Wednesday.

He was regardless rewarded, however, with two goals from the recalled Charlie Austin and another from substitute Jay Rodriguez as he continued his comeback from a career-threatening knee injury.

Making only his second start of the season - Austin had been expected to benefit from the departure of Graziano Pelle to China’s Shandong Luneng - the striker won a fifth-minute penalty when his low right-wing cross struck unlucky Sparta defender Costa Nhamoinesu’s elbow.

A brief argument with Dusan Tadic over who would take it ensued, before he confidently struck into the bottom left corner beyond Tomas Koubek.

It was in the 26th minute when, following positive build-up play from Shane Long and Cuco Martina on the right wing, the former sent a low cross to Austin. The striker dived low to head into the back of the net, but a second goal was rightly disallowed after he strayed just offside.

Out wide and in the final third was where the hosts - owing largely to the diamond formation Puel has introduced - created the majority of their space.

Austin’s and Long’s rotation and pursuit of width consistently took them beyond Sparta’s full-backs, and created another goalscoring opportunity just two minutes after Austin’s header was ruled out.

This time Martina’s initial cross was blocked, but after he recollected possession he brilliantly sent another ball with the outside of his boot towards Austin, who from directly in front of goal calmly nodded inside the right post via Koubek’s hand.

Sparta’s greatest first-half threat came when Maya Yoshida’s poor back-pass left goalkeeper Fraser Forster under unnecessary pressure. It revealed much about why their last win in England came in 1983, at Watford.

Their manager Zdenek Scasny was still playing and scored the game’s only goal that day, and he responded to his team’s struggles at St Mary’s by introducing David Lafata for Lukas Julis at half-time.

Southampton played with less intensity thereafter - potentially inviting trouble with just a two-goal advantage - but the visitors’ threat was again minimal.

Only Lafata had tested Forster with a low shot the goalkeeper dived well to save when Southampton began another attack in stoppage time.

Substitute Rodriguez played a one-two with the classy Long, recollecting possession in front of goal in the area, and comfortably finishing towards the bottom right to secure the three points needed from what might be the easiest of their six Group K games.

Southampton’s Charlie Austin: European debut was ‘a special night’

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin said it was “a special night” after scoring a brace on his European debut as Southampton opened their Europa League Group K campaign with a 3-0 victory over Sparta Prague.

Austin, 27, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after five minutes before doubling Saints’ lead in the 27th minute, having just had another effort chalked off for offside before substitute Jay Rodriguez added a third in added time to make sure of the points.

Austin told BT Sport: "It’s a special night for me. More importantly it was all about the win for us.

“Not only in this competition but to get the lads’ spirits up because we’ve not had the greatest of starts in the league but we knew if we put a performance together the win would come and luckily enough tonight, it did.”

Before converting the first-half penalty, Austin had a brief argument with Dusan Tadic about who would take the spot kick.

Austin added: "As a centre-forward I think I should take the penalties. I’ve come here full of confidence, even though I’ve not scored.

“I put the ball on the spot and luckily it gave us a 1-0 [lead]. I think it was a bit silly from me and Dusan but I’ll take the penalties in future.”
