Considering the build up and left field selection, this will annoy the locals
Lyon to Vince, no run, dropped , Tim Paine has shelled one! Another super bit of bowling, pushed across and found the outside edge as Vince pushed forward. Wasn’t a big deflection, although not easy standing up. It clangs out of the gloves.
Ten minutes until tea. Our stats man Shiva has pulled out a super nugget: the last time (and only other instance) two England batsmen making their Ashes debut in Australia put together a century stand in their debut innings was in 1903 - Tip Foster and Albert Relf at the SCG in 1903-04
What a moment to strike. About three minutes until tea. England captain Joe Root walks in

Cummins to Stoneman, OUT , through him! Cummins makes the breakthrough moments before tea. A top delivery. Round the wicket, just back of a length, zips past Stoneman’s inside edge into off stump. A gem of a ball to end a very fine innings
On the plus side we are only 2 down and have taken 2 sessions out of the game. Everyone knows that getting out of the Gabba without getting hammered is crucial for the series
However the run rate has been very slow and sounds like the ball may be starting to reverse.
127 odd is not actually a lot of runs in modern cricket. Obviously we have to play the conditions and the occassion but Lyon has kept it tight.
With no Stokes to accelerate at #6 and no Moeen strengthening the tail…
Phil, the score is not the issue here. Not losing wickets is huge. The longer we bat the much better chance we have of avoiding the widely-predicted battering.
Starc to Vince, no run, good delivery, full and straight, and blocked
The ball has landed in a puddle, which is a bit of a blow for the Aussies. No chance of getting it swapped … but it might have undermined that hint of reverse swing

Starc to Vince, FOUR , on the pads, that’s easy pickings for a well-set batsman. And Vince has rattled into the 80s
Hazlewood to Vince, OUT , Vince is run out for 83! A sensational pick-up-and-shy from Nathan Lyon in the covers, and he’s gone by a yard! Vince knew from the moment he set off that he was up against it, but it still took a dead-eyed off-balance fling at two stumps to seal the deal!
I don’t want to tempt fate but all we need is two more batsmen to make it to fifty or one to get to 100 and that will be a decent start, better than anyone expected.
When we get closer to Par Goatie we can lighten up a bit
