Lampard in ‘serious contention’ for Everton

Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer

Frank Lampard remains in serious contention to succeed Rafael Benitez as Everton manager as owner Farhad Moshiri holds off on appointing previously favoured choice Vitor Pereira.

The former Chelsea manager has already held talks with Everton’s hierarchy and further discussions are expected in what has been become an increasingly chaotic process.

Pereira was in pole position 48 hours ago after impressing Moshiri in his interview and is still under consideration but a toxic reaction from Everton fans to the 53-year-old’s proposed appointment means Lampard is now a leading candidate.

Derby County manager and former Everton striker Wayne Rooney is also on the short-list although at this stage he appears to be the outsider.

Toxic reaction? Blimey. Who would they be happy with?

I heard God turned them down yesterday…said their expectations were too high. :lou_eyes_to_sky:

I think the phrase here is “beware of what you wish for”

Christine can come over to my house while he manages.

As someone used to the high life, she won’t want to go to Goodison.

Wasting their time. Le Tiss would only ever manage us anyway.

Look who’s back! Inspired, no doubt, by Paul Ince. Bryan Robson next?

use him to keep you up and when he does DO NOT extend his contract

Highly unlikely as he wants to retire at the end of his current contract

Can you see that Spurs squad putting in the extra work Ralph demands?

Nope. Neither can I

That’s what you’d think, isn’t it. I’d like to see him see out his contract here, but let’s face it, he’s going to be approached by the “bigger” clubs at some stage. Of course, anyone confident that he definitely won’t go there could make a few shekels betting against it. :+1::grin:

…and another.

“He is ambitious and would jump at the chance of managing a club like United”

They know this how? FFS. :unamused:

I can see a scenario where Man U, and spurs, will find it difficult to find anyone willing to take up the poisoned chalice.

Athletico Mince, a podcast featuring Bob Mortimer, do a section called the British Managers Club. This cohort is led by Big Sam Allardyce and also includes Mark Hughes and Steve McLaren, among others, as members.

The pinnacle of success in the British Managers club is the “Destroy and Exit”, whereby managers go into a job knowing they’ll leave the club in a worse league position than before, spunking up a load of money in the process, and getting a big pay-off at the end.

Spurs and Man United have never been “destroy and exit” clubs before. I reckon Big Sam is licking his lips.

This is more or less a direct quote from Tim Sherwood’s monologue on Sky’s Gillette Soccer Saturday. Cracking journalism.

Completely ignores all of the recent stuff about him enjoying a challenge, building something under constraints and not buying it, and retiring in two years.

It is good that when the offer does come in Ralph has the 9-0 repaying loyalty reply in his pocket when he tells them :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
