This needs to be taken away from the Home of Happpy Golf stories, sorry
Only the four leaders bettered par with American Jason Dufner heading the chasing pack at level par after a testing first round in difficult conditions on Long Island.
There were 200 double bogeys or worse on day one - compared to 212 for the entire tournament in 2017 - as players faced a combination of wind, punishing rough and testing pin positions. The field’s combined score was more than 1,000 over par.

Ouch. Russell Henley has made a real mess of the third hole with a treble bogey.
Henley drove into the left high rough and couldn’t move the ball on his first try. His next effort went into the rough on the opposite side of the fairway. He then two-putted on the green.
Thanks Tim, and I join you with Justin Thomas having just dropped another shot at the third hole, which is playing as his 12th.
The world number two stumbles to four over, while the world number one has a long birdie putt… 45 feet, up the slope. That’s tidy. DJ should tap in for par from there.
Tiger Woods tidies up for a welcome par of his own that keeps him 11 over for the tournament.
Those holiday makers heading to the Hamptons for a long weekend won’t be too impressed with the weather at the minute.
It’s more reminiscent of Southampton, England than Southampton, New York… bleak, rainy, windy (apologies to those living on the south coast who will probably tell me it’s glorious sunshine down there today).
Not ideal conditions, as if they ever are at a US Open…
Pretty sure a charge of bringing the game into disrepute is needed.
Not for lefty, but for the morons at USGA who keep fucking up their tournament by making courses impossible to play and filling them with moronic drunk spectators
