The 2017 Election Thread

Ah, but are Lib Dems left wingers BT? Labour got 29% of people with A levels and 28% for people with degrees, so a bit less. The Tories had 36% with degrees so the hotbed didnt seem to affect them. Also interesting that the Tories had a massive percentage of 53% amongst people with no formal qualifications!

That post I did about the minimum wage did shite on Twitter, but has gone gangbusters (in my meagre terms) of Facebook. It has gotten over 210 shares and is still getting shared. It’s a popular idea, and it taught me something. Keep it simple, stupid. If the Labour Party can get its messaging right, that policy is a winner, even among over 50s, many of whom are still in minimum wage work.

As for how it will paid, that’s a pretty simple one to answer. It’ll be paid by employers, and yes, we’ll hear the shrill cries of business saying that they cannot afford it. It’s what they’ve done with every single reform which tips more power into the hands of the workers, since time immemorial.

The simple fact is that if a person can go out to work for forty hours a week, and still not be able to survive without government help, one of more elements of the system are fundamentally broken.

I’ve been to two universities. Portsmouth (degree) and Southampton (masters).

I was already into politics by the time I got there thanks to my parents. I was having political debates with much older people when I was 16. Yeah I was that annoying.

I don’t remember much of a leftie political element at Portsmouth. Don’t remember much of any politics going on there.

Southampton was a few years ago and I remembered being shocked they were not part of the NUS. If memory is correct they’d thought it was all a bit too political/leftie for them.

My continuing interest came via the union I have been a member of for 20 years. These days I feel all a bit too drained to have discussions.

Will it fuck. It’ll be paid for by The People, and accounted for by Inflation. Employers won’t go, ok fair cop, we’ve got bigger wage bill now, that’ll have to come out of our profits :lou_sad:. They’ll start charging more for whatever it is they’re fkn selling.

Pay a fair living wage and stop the subsidy of people working having to claim benefits, companies already get handouts to employ people.
Fair pay, fair conditions and equality for all.

Are you saying the entire market is a cartel, Bear?

If not, a lot of businesses are going to have to work within their margins, perhaps pay their directors less in the way of salary and dare I say it? Get competitive.

If a business can’t pay enough to its employees to live on, it’s not a good business, neither is it good business for the country.

I only know my little corner of the world obv, and I don’t actually pay anyone less than £10 per hour, but increasing the minimum wage to £10 would cause even my Business Problems I reckon.

I employ bros to dig holes in street, and to disrupt local residents as much as possible. The bros who ain’t v.good, I pay around £10 per hour. The bros that are good get like £12-13 per hour. Problem I’ll have, is it’s hard, backbreaking, unpleasant work in all weathers. I ain’t gonna get anyone to do it for £10, if they can earn the same pushing trolleys round car park, or delivering flyers, or working in carwash. So I’ll have to bump the bros who ain’t v.good up to like £12. Then the bros who work hard are gonna be onto me in terms of, why am I breaking back when I only earn same as that useless twat? So I’ll have to bump them bros up to £15. Then the supervisors will kick off that they earn less than the bros they are supervising, so I’ll have to bump them bros up to £18 or whatever.

Whichever way you look at it, I’m gonna have to charge you more for that important hole in ur street that’s making you late for work.

I mean, fair enough, that’s just what occurred to me after thinking about it for 2 mins. It may be that corbyn has put a lot of research into it, and reviewed all the angles. But I suspect, it being such a fkn round figure and all, that he just pulled it out his fkn Arse.

Lol - pay the directors less - lol.

It is not about directors pay, it’s about shareholders return. I have a business. I have a standard of living. If my profit comes under pressure because of rising costs, I’m going to pull the other lever that is available to me i.e. Sales price. Thing is that won’t make me uncompetitive because all my rivals have got the same problem and will do the same (or go out of business)

I think there may have been some thought a s researxh. Currently some naughty business can’t even manage to pay the minimum wage.

The voluntary living wage is at £8.45 but £9.75 in London. So not really far of the proposed amount.

what-is-the-living-wage

I do wonder about places that pay so low. If you aren’t making the money to pay minimum wage then your possibly not really doing well are you.

As I am on £18 an hour @bearsy can you let me know what those supervisors would be doing for that amount. Asking for a friend.

It is a simple concept but big business doesn’t want it, Scandinavian nation s have used it for year, high tax, high earnings and a more equal society, seems fair to me.

Why won’t it happen here?

Because most are very selfish and don’t look at the long term view for say 100 years.

You have to stand beside the hole whilst leaning on a spade pointing at places to dig.

Hard to give a shit about what is going on in a hundred years time, when I am unlikely to last more that another 35. It’s bad enough trying to give a shit about a pension.

£320 labouring after tax on a 40 hour week is shite, c’mon Bearsy up the whack lad.

What do you think is a fair wage for Bearsy to pay then Baz?

Tbf I’d get them to pay me for the fuck up they always seem to make in my neck of the woods…
