Wolf Hall - new series BBC1

Really well filmed but definitely slow TV with lots of taking off of hats and bowing. Plot moves along well though.

Mark Rylance excelling as Thomas Cromwell (sad looking / miserable / depressed character?) & Damian Lewis as a credible Henry VIII. Jonathan Pryce playing Cardinal Wolsey in the same manner as Cartwright Senior in Slow Horses.

Weirdly, and a comment just for continuity, it seems to have been set in a parallel universe which was more ethnically diverse in the reign of Henry.

I take it you haven’t watched any recent period dramas from the BBC??

The BBC are making the sequel, with Lashana Lynch as Henry.

I’d watch that.

Funnily enough, no I haven’t

I have been watching Manifest.

Have finished the first season but not sure if I can recommend it or will even carry on with myself.

It feels like LOST

Enjoyable from moment to moment, but doesn’t seem planned out and I am skeptical about it having a satisfying ending.

Am I wrong?

It has an ending.
There are “calls” for more or spin offs.
It felt like Lost but I stuck with it and it was a good time filler and went to some places later that made me think. It developed the characters so I cared about them a bit and yeah it rambled but like the Cylons they had a plan

It’s worth sticking with unless you have a better show to watch through - I decided on about 1000 hours or more of The X Files and into S7 it is still entertaining me but some episodes are meh, it certainly slaps me around the face for only having watched occasional episodes through all my travelling back in those days as I catch up on the actual deep back ground story (no spoilers)

Personally I’d binge The Rookie buts that is because it is just comfort food and a good ensemble

No, you’re not wrong.

The main actor’s surname should give you a hint as to the ending. Not satisfying at all.

My spider sense is tingling, Bob. They seem to be working it out as they go along, which is fair enough for the characters but not so much for the writers.

The whole death day thing seems unnecessary. Even the catalyst of a man drowning violently on land was pants both in execution and implications.

Michaela is pretty easy on these buggered old minces, so that’s nice.

You’ve got to hand it to the show runners. They’ve basically cut three different genres; mystery, soap opera and police procedural, With just enough to keep you going.

Bingeable, as the marketing peeps say.

I fancy Kate off LOST more though. Still.

I tried watching Manifest and lasted 3/4 of the first episide before i binned it. I did binge watch lost though.

Paris has fallen on Prime

Complete bullshit they say France is our oldest allie

Every English person knows Portugal is our oldest allie

The jocks might disagree but fuck them

It was enjoyable bullshit though

The blurb implies the franchise has gone global & local.
Stick with it, I am sure S25 will maybe be Portsmouth has Fallen.

Oh wait, that would be a documentary not a thriller

The only thrilling bit of Potsmouth is leaving.

In a bid to please both initial respondents I have decided the compromise way out is the way forward.

I am still watching it to please Dubai “Any Old Shit will do” Phil

But I’m also looking down my nose at it for Big Bad Bob.

Most of all, I am deconstructing it.

In that respect, it is somewhat genius.

This shit got five seasons. It can’t cost that much to make. They get to spread the cost of the plane set by using it again and again

The big special effect is ADR. This series could have been made anytime after the introduction of the talkie.

I often thought it was an ensemble soap opera fimed in the same 2 timber framed houses.

I’ve mentioned Have I got News for you launchef a US version.
The host is Roy Wood Jnr - it’s been very anti Trump.
I had wondered how it would cope in the post election meltdown.
So they shipped Roy over to host the English version this week.

A lot of “in” jokes but I truly was pissing nyself laughing at it, especially how they set Roy up with English place names.

Brilliant idea well executed

Prime Video #1 World Wide
Based on the books, think it follows on from the films - certainly vibes to the Morgan Freeman one

It is dark, brutal and very tied up in Black Life/Politics BLM and Defund the Police.

This is not candyfloss TV, certainly not one for Mrs P_F but I think it is going to be a thing.
Phil’s rating?
I think this is pretty good. Not Reacher good but pretty good
