Anyone watched Pistol yet?
Was looking forward to it when it was announced. Now it’s actually here I feel suddenly reluctant to watch it in case it ruins the memories of being around when the real thing happened.
I watched it, was interesting in parts but didn’t blow me away.
Watched a decent documentary on PiL on amazon the other day that’s worth a look.
What’s that called?
Rotten or something like that I think. Maybe.
The Public Image is Rotten.
I watched it, was looking forward to it being a huge fan of the Pistols, but was very disappointed, and haven’t finished it. John Lydon got it right I think, the idea that anyone could do a biopic about the Sex Pistols without any input from Lydon is surely a non-starter. I know that he’s a cantankerous old bugger but, like it or not, he was the Pistols.
I read Jonesy’s book, which the series was based on a few years ago, it was a decent read to be fair. That Chrissie Hynde was a game old bird by all accounts, up for anything! Saw The Pretenders at Poole Arts Centre back in the day, with the original line up, before the bulk of the band perished with Smack overdoses, they were fucking ace. Their first album was one of the greatest British debut’s in my humble opinion, not a duff track on it. Still listen to it regularly. But The Pistols, NMTB, has to be right up there as one of the greatest British albums ever, as influential as Sgt Pepper IMO.
Portsmouth Mecca - The Pretenders & UB40 in support.
Right at the front shouted up to one of the band & asked who are you? you’re great! He replied UB40…
The Pretenders came on - Chrissie in spray on Leather pants, we were now leaning on the stage.
She played a big guitar solo, slid on her knees and they landed on my shoulders.
She finished the guitar solo. I nearly finished myself.
I should have sued her.
How could a teenager have any sexual fantasy after it actually happened?
Found out the next day I had a broken rib.
My (ex) mate punching me while yelling get out of there, I want a go
I read that very recently. Also read Matlock’s autobiography, and both of Lydons. I thought Lydon’s first, No blacks, no Irish, no dogs, was brilliant, really compulsive reading. His second didn’t grab me at all. I enjoyed Jonesy’s, but didn’t enjoy the self-justifying theme that ran through it. He seemed to be apologising in a roundabout way, but I’ve noticed that with other biographies involving people who’ve taken the Alcoholics Anonymous path (Lol Tolhurst’s was another notably similar tome in that respect.) It’s the shaming aspect that I find distasteful.
I was there upstairs and remember UB40 blew them off the stage. Pretenders made out they had sound problems for fucking up several songs.
It was a brilliant night.
Coming from Salisbury where our biggest gig was Barclay James Harvest to the “Big City” - was my 1st gig while at Poly there.
Caught the live music bug that night
She made up for it with a cracking set at The Other Stage many years later (and ago) at Glasto.
Also enjoyed No blacks no Dogs no Irish, read it many years ago now. Haven’t read his second though, I shall take your advice and swerve it.
Jonesy obviously has problems, sex addiction from an early age, Kleptomania big style, clearly a very naughty boy who apparently was irresistible to the ladies by all accounts. Lucky sod! But I did enjoy his book, it was an easy read and was laugh out loud funny, he held nothing back, very honestly written. I’m sure with hindsight he maybe felt a bit ashamed of his behaviour in his youth and the way he may have mistreated some people. He was a big drinker, think he has cleaned up now though.
I think his guitar playing with The Pistols was seriously underrated at the time, I know he has worked with some serious players in the US over the years and is obviously respected as a musician.
Wouldn’t mind reading the Glen Matlock autobiography. I saw him with The Rich Kids at The Village Bowl in Bournemouth, supporting The Stranglers, would have been around 1977-78. It was a very strange gig, Midge Ure finished their set covered in gob, a group of about a dozen hardcore punks spent the whole set po-going and spitting continuously, and Ure stood there and took it, he was literally dripping at the end. When The Stranglers came on they started up again, and it didn’t go down well! They stopped playing, told them to cut it out or else! When they resumed playing the spitting resumed as well and Jean-Jacques Burnel unstrung his bass and smacked one of the punks round the head with it. All hell broke loose, around a dozen Hells Angels stood at the back, who followed The Strangers everywhere, charged down the front and proceeded to beat the holy crap out of the spitting punks. Really serious violence. It ended with just about every police car and van in Bournemouth attending, myself and my two mates were sat in my mates car just down the road watching running battles between panicking coppers and Hells Angels. Fabulous entertainment to be fair. So we got about half a song from The Stranglers. I did see them at The Marquee a few months later though. Top live band.
Have you been to the current farewell tour? If not, I can thoroughly recommend it.
Ah I have a “Stranglers” story.
Mate brought Hugh Cornwall to Oman & sandpit.
Binged in some marketing funds to sponsor them.
They played Oman then the night they were due to play Abu Dhabi a Sheikh died so gig was cancelled. Mate asked what to do so I suggested a BBQ
Beers were obtained, about a dozen of us + band rocked up at his villa, we talked shit, had beers then Hugh picked up an acoustic guitar and we sang along with him to the whole set.
Unbelievable night.
The Dubai gig the next day was bouncing.
And yes, I know it wasn’t the real Stranglers but singing Golden Brown? Bucket list shit
I’m sure you posted that before
Helluva night I bet though.
Any chance
I haven’t, not sure if they are playing Liverpool. I did see them at the Guildford festival in the early 2000s with the replacement singer for Hugh Cornwall, they were very good.
The Boys Ep. 5
A very unexpected Hollywood dance scene this week - recreated in a hospital with Frenchie and Kimiko - sublime.
Sir-Cums-A-Lot-779 and the Crimson Countess with oversized anal-beads kept up the filth factor.
