Must be about 1937-38…the Civic Centre is still incomplete but most of those trees are still there. Say what you like about Southampton but I don’t know many cities that have a greener route into the city centre.

I once had a test in this building. I thought it a great shame when they took it down and built modern flats.

I remember seeing some Chelsea supporters forcing a young Saints’ fan to get on his knees and pay homage to a bunch of Chelsea players who watched laughing from one of the windows of this building.

I remember going over that girder bridge in the bus…not vividly but we went into town from Bitterne every Saturday morning. Mum always had to take us up to the Bird Aviary opposite the Cenotaph before doing her shopping.
