Anyone have any history on this business/shop?

My dear old Dad would have loved this. One of his ‘party pieces’ was to memorise all the cinemas in the city and surrounding areas.

Right, last one for today.

I only have about 50/60 left, so the last postings will be this week.

Please add as much as you can to this thread, comments, info and your own pictures. Even though some of the changes get my back up, just looking at the old pictures, make me feel very proud to be a Sotonian!

Ocean Terminal

That was a glorious building, demolished at a time when the demand for ocean liners appeared to be in permanent decline, owing to the growing affordability of air travel. After all, who crossed the Atlantic by ship in the 1980s? A decade or two after that, the cruise market started taking off and it’s still expanding now. Would this beautiful building still be in use had the cruise boom started earlier? Who knows.

One thing worth noting about the old Ocean Terminal was that it was built in 1950. So it could be regarded as a building designed and built in a style that was already falling out of fashion. Not that this detracts in any way from its qualities.
