We are hitting rate limits from YouTube (as well as fucking Twitter!) and that means that if we use too many of either format, weā€™ll end up with Oneboxes not working.

It wouldnā€™t. You need to put the identifier (thatā€™s the bit following the = in the second URL) after /embed/ in the first URL. So, for the one youā€™re linking, it would be:
