Saints V Watford Build up and Match day thread

Ok for first game of the season, probably would have been more upset with result later in the season

We need to get stronger, they were very physical in the midfield and bullied us. Sad to say JWP didn’t have his best game and always seems to be chasing the ball, not sure he reads game well.

Think we really missed Fonte calming at the back and moving the defence out together.

Hoijberg, Pied made good starts and Redmond was much better than I Expected…not quite Henry yet but best I’ve seen him play

Romeu needs his turbo replacing

There used to be 2 of us in Doha Phil, but Paul had to go home. 17 sounds like a great day out

Targett needs to get up that wing, I’m guessing he was instructed not to.

We just look a bit toothless, it all went a bit Arsenal-Lite near the end, only one team trying to win, and not looking like the’yre trying too hard - let’s see if we can walk it in

All in all it was nearly encouraging and as pointed out before, in April I’d have been pretty pissed off, but for a first day with a new manager and changes to playing staff, I’ll reluctantly take just the one point.

Well, that escalated quickly.

Hobgoblin, bewbs and strangely I am sleeping on the doormat

Wtf happened? Did Justin win? How was the game?

Anyone fancy leftover Fajitas?

Where am I?

Home Team Southampton Away Team Watford

Possession Home 66% Away34%

Shots Home 24 Away 5
Shots on Target Home 6 Away 1
Corners Home 6 Away 2
Fouls Home 8 Away 12
Looking at these stats we appear to have played well. Obviously my eyes or the copious amounts of Vodka and coke did them in because the first half we were shite and the second half although better could not break down a 10 man defence at home Report card after first game Needs to up there game and start to shoot on sight of the goal.

Ouch.

Considering we didn’t even have our #baggate team in town we had a good turn out, added a Palace, Celtic & Forest fan to our numbers for the game. It just kinda went on a bit too long for a work day today…

The game

Thought we were wrong mentally 1st half. Seemed to be thinking about formation not 110% on the pitch. Midfield looked like they were in treacle. Also felt with JWP Redmond & Cedric we were a little short on height.

Don’t know if it was becasue VVD & Maya wanted to sit deep but we seemed to be playing a long way from their defence, we were set up to play on the break and yet were plpaying in long balls (Targett & Cedric not maurauding enough maybe?) So 1st half it just seemed we were crying out for Chazza (or missing Pelle) to hold the ball up a bit while players got into support. and imho Davis is wasted out wide.

Even the short passes around the box were woeful.

2nd half felt we suddenly pushed on. Seemed to attack in waves and a lot more running with the ball. We certainly forced Watford back deeper and seemed to have far more players in and around the box. It was actually really entertaining.

Think we screamed at Redmond about 4 or 5 times to JUST FOOKING HIT IT and finally he did.

Pierre looked class when he came on Pied also, (BUT again I think mentally he may have been over pumped for it - took him some time to stop trying to score worldys and look for the pass)

So the match report - was stupid goal to concede, and an encouraging 2nd half showing what we could actually do. Think CB is going to be an issue - need Fonte back OR another VVD brought in, and also need Betrand back (what IS wrong with him?)

We ALWAYS lose oour first game of the season and we are safely mid table and ahead of Leicester already  Think we will be fine.

JWP really needs to step up though, can’t see him getting back in the team ahead of Pierre and also think we may need Clasie’s little lay offs in this formation, but who to leave out?

Play like we did 2nd half and we could get a point at OT next week. Play like we did 1st half we’ll get wallopped

Watford were set up like a typical Seria A side with most people behind the ball, especially when down to ten men. Never going to walk the ball through that kind of set up.

Horrendous first half, no fight or hard nose attack on the ball. FFS, if Capoue can score from inside the area, then that says it all.

Redmond could be very tasty in that position but needs to learn when to lick and when to stick.

Verdict? Always lick before you stick and a point is better than none :lou_sunglasses:

Suprisingly not feeling too shabby at the moment, but I’m sure it’ll kick in when I sober up!!

Mini panic attack this morning, woke up with Saints shirt still on, mightily releived to see phone, wallet, glasses and sun glasses all neatly lined up on cupboard near front door and that I hadn’t swithched the computor on last night and posted any bullshit on here!!

First half the passing and movement from Watford was impressive. We could have scored in the first few minutes and the game would have been very different. Once the went one up their confidence was sky high but no end product.

We looked very disjointed and rusty in the first half but got it together after the break. We scored and never looked back. But both teams a little toothless in front of goal on the way.

On to OT it is then. Will be interested to see how the mancs do today!

For those that joined over the summer, I don’t know much about football. I am not quite at the level of a kitten pawing at a screen, wondering how such sorcery is achieved in the human world, but I’m not far off. You should look to others if you want in-depth tactical analysis.

Instead, I prefer to focus on the view from the Itchen North corner, and the sort of experience that was had. There have been a few positive changes. Not only has Sfcsim nabbed the seat next to me, but there are also a trio of new lads in front of us who seem to be up for singing. We got a few things going. Could be a decent opportunity to invent a few new songs as well.

Saw a Sikh mate of mine in the Rockstone. He and his crew have all got season tickets for Itchen North too. We’re the international wing of the stadium.

Watford’s fans, to be fair, weren’t terrible. They were in good voice while they had the lead, although they need to work on their songs more than we do. Remember how “der der der der, Graziano” was sung to the tune of “fucking useless”? Well these geniuses sing “Watford FC” to the tune of “you’re fucking shit!”, something the Itchen North dutifully reminded the Hornets every time they fired it up.

They predictably lost their voice after we equalised, only really piping up after the goal was ruled offside.

My lone madman moment in the crowd was singing “you dirty northern bastards”, which raised some chuckles and one other singer. Never took off though.

The North car partk was closed off afterward, but didn’t notice any trouble on my way out of the game. We did have one moment when people in Itchen North craned their necks around, usually a sign that’s something is kicking off near one of the executive boxes. Dunno what all that was about.

On the game itself, I’m encouraged, especially with Redmond getting a debut goal. We should really have secured our first opening home day win of the season since 1988, but we were in part unlucky, part careless and part fighting against the ref. Love the new signings. Don’t really care if Cedric has just won the EUROS. We looked a lot better after Pied came on. Redmond was impressive throughout. Neither JWP or Stevo had good games. Much of Watford’s limited attacking threat came gifted via sloppiness. Maya’s mistake could have cost us the game.

Think we need a couple more players this window. Goatboy and both his mates said the same thing at the pub afterward. “He has got one in him every game”. If we want to improve, defensive cover is an area we need to look at urgently.

We didn’t lose, and demonstrated much to suggest that we can win some games. The second half performance is going to worry a few defences if it’s replicated. The rub of the green won’t always be as bad as it was yesterday, altthough fair play to Watford’s keeper. He kept them in the game at times.

Good start to the season. Looking forward to see more of the Puel age.

I thought I could hear The Internationale and The Red Flag in the background of the TV commentary.

I also thought Pied did well, but it’s worth remembering that Watford were down to 10 when he came on so he was able to push forward in a way that neither Cedric or Targett could/would.

Pied definitely looks as though he’s going to get forward at every opportunity. This is so important for Claude’s formation but you have to be totally secure in possession to do that.

Yesterday we just couldn’t keep the ball and if Cedric and Targett had got forward when the usually reliable Davis and JWP were giving the ball away, we’d have been skinned.

This heatmap from Sqwaka shows the events that the players were involved in - basically they either had the ball or were challenging for the ball. We’re playing from left to right so events on the right show attacking intent and defensive actions are shown on the left.

In this first one, look at the defending that Cedric had to do yesterday (on the left)…

Then compare that to the defending that Pied just didn’t have to do.

He has one significant defensive task in the traditional right-back position.

Just saying that players can’t always be called out for individual performances when the TEAM doesn’t allow them to do what they are individually tasked to do.
