Saints v Spurs - Sun 21st Jan, 16:00 KO

?

The only bit of this post I agree with is the the first 4 words.

Lemina had a good game until he was shot towards the end. Stephens had an ok game though I have reservations about him in a back 4. Boufal was ok without being direct enough.

Spurs were not shit. They are a quality side with an extremely good midfield and dangerous forward players. Don’t talk fucking bollocks you melt.

Why aren’t we bringing kids through from the academy? Les Reed’s a cunt and the Chinese are shysters.

Obafemi looks like he’s talking to The Sleeve.

Nah, he’s looking up.

Strange putting the lad in whilst the transfer window is on? Distractions, gambles and on the cheap, busy day in the window I see?

I’ll be surprised if we buy anyone in this window bazza. Suck it up snowflake. Or join us in the trenches.

Yeah, Barry, suck it up you fucking snowflake melt.

You puddle.

If you’re not with us Bazza, then you’re part of the problem.

It’ll be tough without you, Bazza, but we’ll keep the red flag flying here.

The force will be strong in this one.

Good game of football that. Spurs are a very good side and caused us a lot of problems; but we caused just as many for them and had the better chances to win the game. I liked the trio of Romeu, Lemina and Hojbjerg in midfield and I’d like to see us continue with that - a by-product was having Tadic very much on the left side, which definitely suits him better. He had an excellent game today, as did many of our players - the whole team looked really on it, well set up and well disciplined.

Right from the off we were pressing them high up the pitch, and we kept that up for the entire game. That really was so good to see. We need to keep playing that way, as it will pay dividends against other teams, who won’t have Spurs’ capacity to do us damage. Gabbiadini looks short on confidence; a run in the team is probably what he needs to start getting that back. Unlike some others, I thought Stephens had a good game - he made any number of excellent interceptions and tackles, won the ball a fair few times in the air (his weakest point without a doubt), and used the ball really well when in possession. He’s better already than plenty of central defenders playing week in, week out in the Premier League. I’d agree with Goatboy that Stephens would be best suited to playing in a back three, probably taking the role of free man between two more orthodox centre-halves.

I even liked Pellegrino’s substitutions today.

Agreed with all of this except the Stephens bit

Harry Kane is a great player but he isn’t an absolute towering bruiser so failing to nullify him from a set piece is criminal. He is often caught ball watching out of position and relied on Hoedt to bail him out a few too many times.

Putting Boufal on for Hog Pog was pleasing to see because he could have gone safe and brought Davis on earlier. But being positive gave us more impetus and meant we didn’t retreat (as much) as we have been of late and could have done against a good side.

He could also have brought Redmond on instead of the young lad, which again I’m glad he didn’t.

We need to take that intensity in to the next few games and get back to winning ways.

I listened to the game on The Radio like a Pensioner, cos I was drive back from Airport*. I was so pumped when we scored! And then I became physically ill when they immediately equalised and I couldn’t listen any more. I turned it back on much later and was v.surprised to learn that it was still 1:1. Well done Pellegrino! I was in time to hear Obi Wan make his debut. The commentator immeditately said he “reminds me physically of Rod Wallace”, which casual racism or not, drew a picture.

I was listening v.carefully, and heard no signs at all of the mass Guan 2.0 manager out protest, so well done Saints fans for Support tks.

* I’ve been Barcelona. It was quite good. I like to drink Whisky + Coke cos I am allergic to Beer, but in spain they have no conception of the single/double system, they bring the bottle to your table and keep pouring like they’re waiting for you to say “when”. I tried saying when, but it didn’t help, so I basically end up drinking 12 shots an hour and I was v.fucked every night which was good.

Also, bird book this trip, and I swear she purposely chose a weekend when Barcelona was play away, so I didn’t even get to have a Nou Camp matchday experience. Can’t imagine it’s all that much different to SMS tho.

A very interesting set up from MoPe yesterday.

Never in a million years would I have imagined any tactical shape or reason to play 4-4-2 with Hojberg being the second “striker”

It had obvious flaws - his lack of pace and “striker movement” (and finishing ability), but it did change our dynamic, allowing us to defend much better from the front - almost out-press a Pochettino team.

Whilst he didn’t really help our attacking / goal scoring problems he did help us stay more on the front foot until he picked up a knock from the multiple Dembele fouls/ran out of steam.

Gabbi did show why he has not been getting game time. I do wonder about his health/fitness, those black rings around his sunken eyes are worse than mine before my diet changes and on a par with the late BBC Newsreader Peter Woods!

I would be intrigued to see how much better that Hojberg option works with Long instead of Gabbi.

The flat midfield worked well, Hojberg droping back (as did Gabbi) when Spurs pressed us. It seemed to give Romeu more scope to mop up.

Defensively we were sound. Stephens can be accused of gross naivety for losing Kane for their goal - he was on the wrong side of him before the corner came in - for me that IS a problem - inexperience - but it is something that will improve as he matures. Tactically however it is the second game in a row where Hoedt (the senior partner) has left Stephens to pick up the oppositions’ “most effective” striker - the same happened with Deeney.

Now at Sunday League level, your best CB picks up their biggest threat full time - so for the second week in a row, the opposition targetted Stephens - that could be a MoPe error - allowing that to happen by having them fixed in “zones” OR it is inexperience. We DO need to look at that.

Stephens IS a good footballer and his block at the end showed he is better at ground threats than Hoedt (at the moment).

Tadic had a much better game, Lemina did what was needed until his ankle took a hit, JWP is starting to look like the all conquering U-21 Captain again and no doubt some will be suggesting another England call up in the pursuit of Nippers for the future. :lou_facepalm_2:

With Long fit we would have won that. With work on getting the CB’s picking up the right players, the continuing “better than Forster” form of McArthy, the HOPED for two players coming in, MoPe has earned another 10 days of salary from us.

Watford is a “want to win” and “play the strongest team we can” BUT we need players fully recovered and PUMPED UP for the Brighton game.

I STILL believe a lot of our troubles stem from confidence of the players, yesterdays’ result will help that. We HAVE to play football on the front foot, we are a very good side with quality players WHEN we do that.

But if Brighton (Houghton) has any brains he will NOT plan to sit back against us all game but will come at us all guns blazing (as Watford did 2nd half and Spurs at the end of the game yesterday).

Hitting the bottom 3 last week MAY have finally woken our players up.

Let’s hope so.

p.s. it was BLOODY cold last night even over here

As an annoying aside.

The “deconstructed impression of the new home shirt” that I bought for 2 quid from the Gap Outlet in Bangkok is now on a 3 match unbeaten run. Yes it has been washed each week, but the same combo of shirt, same pair of jeans, same coloured undies and socks and the same trainers are on a run.

It’s annoying because I only bought it as a joke on one of our krew who paid a fortune for a similar design and has worn it every game. Hate wearing Pyjamas to the Pub. Mrs D_P is running out of abusive comments about being ready for bed and the Jaegermeister Promo girls
