Saints V Liverpool League Cup Semifinal First leg

Phil - woosh…

Look, this was why I was SO pessimistic about this game.

We did a great job last night (apart from the 1st 10 mins or so, and SHOULD have wiped them away.

But we didn’t and we all know why - that no natural scorer problem. Yeah Redmond may well become the next Thierry Henry (after he leaves us for a big club) but the rub is we played well, we won, and in reality in 2 weeks it will all count for nothing. VVD could get a knock or a suspension or Man Flu.

Sure we COULD get a result up there but the after match glow is simply not there. We did what we could, maybe (after that 20th minute intervention) Karma is trying to help us out and we may get through?

We should be at Wembley already, just like we should have been in the EL knockout stages.

well played last night fans and team but I think we stuffed it up.

How bad is the BBC reporting

Liverpool lost the League Cup final to Manchester City on penalties last season, while Southampton lost their only final 3-2 to Arsenal in 1979.

Pretty certain we played Notts Forest in 1979.

That is absolutely the vibe you got from VVD in the post match press interview. I read the same from Puel (no, I still don’t watch him speak).

BUT.

Once upon a time, it used to be “said” about your name being on The Cup.

Redmond should have scored earlier. Their defender made a very unlikely error & Redmond of all people scores.

In the 20th minute.

Now our strikers couldn’t hit a barn door with Clarkson’s tank let alone a banjo, so perhaps Divine Intervention has stepped in.

Let’s go one step further. Let’s win this for Jack

Can’t argue with that.

Why cant the press admit we played better rather than saying Liverpool had a nightmare. From the BBC again.

Our chief football reporter Phil McNulty says Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius was one of the few impressive performances in Jurgen Klopp’s team during a “shocking” performance.

Before last night we couldn’t create anything and we certainly couldn’t score - that was a massive improvement and a bonus on what many believed could be a 4 or 5 goal defeat.

Let’s enjoy it for a fortnight and accept that it probably isn’t enough to win the tie.

But if you want to dream, imagine the pressure on Liverpool if the guys turned up like that again and scored early at Anfield…

it is strange. Before the game I thought we’d get torn a new one but we didn’t. We played well and won. But it still feels like a disappointment. Maybe its because I have no joy left inside me.

Is it as good as a night out in Derby?

Chuffed to buggery about last night. We are not a poor side and our manager isnt a cunt but we have been struggling for consistency this season. Last night it came together. Yes it will be tough at Anfield but we know that they are mere mortals and that we have nothing to fear. They have to score and the pressure is on them. As Claude says we av nossing to fear. Last night’s result was even more sweet given that the usual twats on TSW were tipping us to lose 1-3. I cant say I was confident about us getting a result, but I was confident in us having the ability to get a result, if that makes sense? As for Redmond, he is getting stick for not scoring more but he did score the winner and he is getting into positions to score. Sod the should haves, we won and we kept a clean sheet which puts us in a strong position for the return. Get the fuck in!!!

I nearly bought my ticket, but backed out. I would not be able to stand all those scousers celebrating reaching the final, that they dio not really want to be in. But if we win through… cannot stand the 2 week wait!

For the record I Had money on us to win Cashed out early and had us down as 1-0 win the SWF prediction league.

Can’t expect results like that everyweek but every now and again. I can handle it.

I had Liverpool for the win, and very happy to take the hit!

Oh and I remembered my red and white boxers yesterday… forgot all about them over the Christmas period.

I thought Lallana was unlucky with that second half effort.

Lesser players would have opted for a shot, but he went with the shinned bobbly cross into empty space option.

I thought ‘agents ex Saints’ had blinders.

Bollocks to it. Ticket bought. Train and hotel booked.

indeed Sim, Lovren looked shakier than a budget flatpack wardrobe in a stiff breeze.

I particularly enjoyed his hospital backpass.

In Depth Review.

Again a gritty performance and the good old stripey bowl and porridge combo did the business again last night.

We March On…good old Quaker Oats. :lou_lol:

I have to say that Claude should come out of this with some credit.

On formation and tactics aside from the blip early on in the first half where we sat really deep, we were able to push them back and find space to attack and counter-attack.

All good, but that’s his job.

However, we have been on a shit run, he’s been taking flack for boring performances, we’re hearing tales of player unrest, we’ve been playing three games per week where he’s had to blood youth players, our captain wants to leave and was excluded from the squad, and yet Claude got the team prepared and focused enough to put in what should have been a 3-0 home win against a first-choice 11 that are sitting right at the pointy end of the league.

Either Barry’s right and Claude is out of his depth and we simply lucked in last night, or Claude’s got something.
