I can answer the last bit about us being a “stable talent farm” and whether that means we can attract quality players and managers. The answer is YES because that’s how half the teams in Europe operate. They have fantastic academies and buy cheap young talent to improve and sell on. Rather than being a problem, it’s an asset. Young players are attracted because they know they’ll improve and eventually get a big move. Managers are used to working like this and, like poch and koeman, also get their big move. We are attractive for these reasons AND people like the Premier league because the money and status, so we will always attract the staff. The one key thing is having an excellent scouting network to snap up talent before others. As long as we can do that we’ll be fine and I for one am happy with that.

We should try & get a Bum Pushed Out XI going. Raheem Sterling can be captain.

Problem as I see it though is that because of the competitive nature of the premier league, there is a very fine line between sccess and potential failure- and ‘typically’ success seems to follow those sides that have greter continuity - stabilty in playing staff and style - not those who change both frequently…for me this is less about Koeman going and being replaced, but about the frequency with which we change…

That is the nature of football now though.

Continuity of staff is far rarer these days. Particularly, in playing and management staff. Koeman is, if I am correct, the first manager to complete two, full successive seasons in around 15 years (possibly more?). So it’s not as if this is entirely new to the club.

The average life-span of a Premier League manager is something like 18 months (I think I saw that somewhere - if that’s wrong please do correct me), so it’s not as if we are chopping and changing at a particularly alarming rate compared to others.

If anything, this shift makes me think that the club trying to stick to it’s principles is a good thing. I’d have loved Koeman to stay for 7, 8 or even 10 years and really build a legacy. Realistically, though, that isn’t likely to happen. So, the club having a long-term view on how they want to play, in what way and the type of personnel required to do so makes a lot of sense. Focusing on people that can slot in, and at some point out, of that seems the most logical way to go.

Yep its a great - its an ideal approach…but not without a fair degree of risk given the league we are in… its how we assess that risk and whether we feel its manageble or not, this is where there will be differences of opinion.

There are two issues getting blurred around the Matty Targett incident.

Bollocking players in front of others will happen and if that’s how Ron gets results then that’s fine, even if the victim doesn’t like it.

The real problem is the likes of Targett and Reed being held back by a manager who has gone native and forgotten he’s meant to be embracing The Southampton Way.

It’s the latter that should bother Les Reed.

Agreed, but we are assuming both Reed and Targett are being heldback as opposed to not developing as their initial promise showed… I have no idea, but can remember the grief (SWF) used to give to Targett when he did play… I have no clue how developing players are ‘integrated’ into the side etc… or what levels they are expected to attain during the process for their progress to be considered solid?

I am kind of playing devils advocate in all this, because I think its important to explore more than one angle, as I do think we dont just swallow the party line…all the time

I’m guessing “Thou Shalt Not Steal” isn’t one of the MUSH bible’s Ten Commandments.

Yes I agree Gay, they need to be of the right standard, and I only used them as examples.

But Ron’s actions suggest that none of our young players are good enough, and that would seem unlikely.
