Collins would have made Ireland a whole lot better than de Valera, for a start he was a respected soldier and leader, the Unionist respected him far more than the man who sent him to his death (by signing his own death warrant) in London. I have lived in Ireland and don’t agree with his politics now but would have then and totally respect him.

Sorry Phil but I dont believe that they still use black slave labour when picking cotton. They really are not comparable. If black people dont like these symbols of oppression, and lets face it, black people still have huge problems with equality in the USA, why should we listen to them and do something about it? They interviews a lady the other day who said she used to walk past the statue everyday and it would be looking down on her, reminding her of what her and her forbears have and had to to deal with. Yes a lot of bad things have happened and there are many people who see that and many people who are trying to change things. Clearly though there are still some who dont get it, from mass far right rallies in America, Germany etc to individuals on internet forums. If removing these statues sends a message, then send the fucking message. If calling out racists and xenophobes on internet forums sends a message, call the fuckers out. It is not our place to tell oppressed people what they can and cant be offended by. We need to listen to them and not put their concerns down as PC gone mad.
