Now I no longer buy or wear replica shirts having bought every Saints home and some away from 1988 - 2014, but was buying them and just popping them in the wardrobe.
I do have a huge interest in old replica shirts across all of football though, so found this article very interesting. Nice to see my first replica shirt design, the Denmark kit, which I had Clarke and 9 on the back.
What are your favourite replicas from around the world?
I absolutely lived in the Barcelona 1998/99 home kit when I got one - with the likes of Figo, Kluivert, Rivaldo, de Boer brothers etc playing in their team at the time it was godly to me. Stayed at my Gran’s for 3 weeks over the summer and wore it every single day - took her about 2 weeks to notice that i’d worn the same top since I arrived!
My all time favourite has to be the Scotland 1993-1995 away kit. Looks absolutely horrific and if there was a naked flame within 50ft of you you’d go up in seconds, but it sums up 90’s kits for me to a tee. Another one that I grew up in…
What is it about shirts? For years I was in denial and convinced myself I was still a size medium.
Now I have a cupboard full of shirts, hardly worn because they never really fit in the first place but I won’t throw out because they might fit next year … they never do
When I was a nipper you couldnt get replica kits. I did have a red and white stripped jersey which I bought off a mate but it had a white neck so it was more Sunderland than Saints. My favourite shirt was a blue and black stripped affair which was super cool for the 60s. At the time I thought that Inter and AC had the coolest kits. I have one replica Saints shirt that my ex wife bought for me which dates from around 2001 and I have only worn it once, during the final against Arsenal.
