Radiohead?

GnR were not the Nirvana of their day. Middle of the road American hair and pout band. Everything Barry should hate. He also wanted Ac Dc from 3-4 years ago. He’s talking shite?

This has become of the worst threads ever on sotonians. Pointless arguments (not even well thought out arguments and a fair share of bollocks) over music. As Bobby Gillespie once sang, “music is music”

If Barry had asked me, rather than @areloa-grandee i would’ve picked this as his kind of music.

I’ve run out of rum now, so i’ll probably be asleep in 10 minutes.

Sorry mate. They absolutely were. When Bon Jovi were penning fables about an already defunct American dream, GnR briefly told it real.

Back in Black is one of the best rock albums ever.

Master of puppets Metallica

Use your illusion GnR

Get off the rum and coke, regardless of what they sound like now, they gave us them, and to answer your question I like a bit more varied than that.

If you’re denying those bands I fear for your musical tastes I really do.

No Saint I’m not, stand in the corner and have a think, Guns and Roses weren’t middle of the road, they were of the time, two separate things, get in that corner.

Another belter, they did the tour a while back playing the whole album.

You said 3-4 years ago, so going on paps estimation you are.

GnR have always been a middle of the road hair and pout band. How old were you when they started, 5, 10?

Coke in my rum. Why would i want to ruin it?

Have a think, in your corner(about bands that started this century would be good).

If Glastonbury is everything you say, you belong there.

A good album is a good album regardless of time, ACDC could still do it 3/4 years ago obviously not now.

Def Leppard is middle of the road soft rock of the time, Billy Idol etc, not GnR.

The corner awaits.

“…When Bon Jovi were penning fables about an already defunct American dream, GnR briefly told it real…”

Real? My arse @pap . They were a generic west coast metal band with a few good tunes and a shed loaf of money chucked at promotional videos. Hardly ground breaking though.

My brother thinks they’re the dogs bollocks, but we rarely agree on anything…

It’s all personal taste.

Can we close this thread now, seems there’s nothing more to say tbf.

At least this thread is now talking about bands that made music.

In 30 years time our Grandkids will be having the same argument

Bieber

Timberlake

Sheeran

Adele

Electric Pyramid

(That last one is my Nieces’ band. Mentioned them before and something huge happened to them at the weekend - Beeb used their new single for montages during the Wimbledon coverage and put them on their playlist)

Btw whatever happened to that new big thing band - Queens of the Stone Age who headlind Other Stage a while back?

Todays annoying question.

Who have had the biggest influence on music.

Radiohead?

Or Stock Aitken & Waterman?

SoS - sorry but you’re wrong about GnR. There was real menace associated with that group when they first appeared.

Never understood the acclaim for Foo Fighters though - rock doesn’t get more MOR. Dave Grohl could have done something interesting after Nirvana (he did briefly with Probot) - just bland.

They’ve done nothing consistently decent since Songs for the Deaf in 2002 (an album Dave Grohl drummed on coincidentally).

If they appeared on the Other Stage at any point in the last 10 years it was on the back of former glories.

They’re playing at the o2 in November. So may new stuff is in the pipeline.

So in summary of the Radiohead thread (at page 7) some people really like them, others not so much. Possibly music geniuses or just pretentious.

Now on to what music /bands are best which is a pretty futile debate as no one will ever agree.

@pap I didn’t like Depeche Mode as a child or teenager. Took me until my 20s to appreciate them.

I went to see Depeche Mode at the NEC in late 80s.

It was horrific. The repetitive sameness of their synth sound and the screaming need for a couple of guitar chords at least. But now they are legends.

Another legend is Rick Astley. God no not in the day but now. His concerts are mercifully short BUT he takes the piss out of himself non stop (similar to James Blunt)

The actual point doesn’t change even for the most rabid Stalinist. In this world you have to earn respect and the ability to do what you want.

In music you make money for your Record Company first then can fart around

No doubt Harry or Zane will go all introspective one day.

I HATED everything Bieber but his last album was not fucking awful and begrudgingly his performance for the Manchester victims showed signs there may be more than a jerk (sorry teenager) to him in years to come.

Radiohead (and Coldplay) can do what they like now.

I like Coldplay I don’t like Radiohead. So call me Tarquin. Like I care.

And yes the ginger busker is entertaining there are times during the day I can enjoy his music. Equally there are times I prefer to listen to Leonard Cohen.
