Not a favourite of mine but I have always admired his self belief. Who could forget that “weave” when he decided to do something about his hair. I think that Private Eye took to calling him “Brillo Pad.” And those pictures of him in a vest going out clubbing yet with a face like someone had been chopping wood on it. The man has balls of steel.

I think a certain individual has supported the publishing of that picture just to use it as another way to get to me. I think I made it clear that it was just my opinion that it shouldnt appear on a football internet forum, and certainly I think the timing is very poor, the dead arent even in the ground yet, but everyone is entiled to an opinion, or not! There are a few dudes who work almost as a team and use similar tactics to derail arguements and debates.
The chap you’re referring to just has a habit of joining whatever side he thinks is winning. Fair play to you, SOG. You haven’t convinced me with all of your arguments over there, and FWIW, there are also other people trying to put a shift in, but you’re nowhere near the “liar, liar, liar” nadir going on at present. It is entirely unsurprising to see the individual use that thread for that purpose though.
Maybe I have a too simplistic view of what this is supposed to be, but trying to score points and abuse other people isnt why I chat on internet forums. I come to exchange views and to learn where possible. Through the debates sometimes my views become stronger, sometimes weaker and on the odd occasion I change my views depending on the strength of the debate. I dont expect everyone to agree with me and there would be little point in debating if we all agreed with each other. Some posters have put some information on that thread which I have found helpful. The situation in the Middle East is super complex as we know. It is not just about those killing in the name of IS. My head is spinning after reading much of the text and if the wise men of TSW think that a few internet jockeys are going to solve the problems by arguing on a football forum they are deluded. Chapel End Chalie made a good point about the use of hyperbole. I would also add the use of paraphrasing. This is not the debating society of the Oxford Union. It is a bunch of blokes who support the same football club talking bollocks on the internet. To go into every last nuance of what exactly was said by who and when it just nonsense. The liar stuff has been used on others to put them down and I found it very funny today when a certain poster was finally hoisted by his own petard (as an aside, Michael Stipe from REM used to think that the phrase had something to do with the smell of your own farts) and caught himself out. It is pathetic really and very childish. Yes, we all get wound up at times. Yes we say things we regret. But to log on every day with the intent on running people down seems very sad to me. It is amzing how things grow out of all proportion. I recall saying way back in the debate that at some point the problems in the Middle East would end up being resolved by dialogue/negotiation and the sooner we reach that point together. from that one individual has decided now that I think IS are a bunch of pussycats who we can sit down with and have a cozy chat over a cuppa. Before you know it you get sucked into defending a position that you didnt even know you had! All of the threads go the same way sooner or later and the Usual Suspects find targets to pick on as some kind of perverse sport. Why would you want to spend part of you day everyday beating people up online? Perhaps they get some kind of perverted pleasure out of it. Then again I could just walk away so maybe I do too!
Hard to place an adjective for the video, it’s not easy viewing but it’s certainly worth a watch. An interview with Eagles of Death Metal, the band playing at the Bataclan that night.
Watched this yesterday, and wasn’t sure where to put it. Guess here makes sense really.
Find this tricky, as I don’t agree with Hughes at all. One only needs to glance at his homeland to see how flat this arguement falls. But, you can clearly see the guy (entirely understandably) is traumatised by what happened.
Couldn’t get the video to embed, so it’s here
Thanks for posting the video. Actually gives his comments some context. The way I had imagined he had come out with these thoughts was with an air of usual american swagger and posturing , but actually he is a guy who is clearly still hurting very badly and just wishes that things had not been as they were. He has been brought up with the philosophy that you have a better chance in life if you arm yourself and protect yourselves and your loved ones.
Of course I disagree utterly with what he is suggesting, to most of us the idea of adding more guns to a situation seems totally counter intuative.
Wish they had played the interview on the radio rather than just quoted him.
Thanks KRG
Yeah, I saw the quotes and probably had a similar reaction to you, but the video itself gives a different impression. Not least as you can see how distraught he still is, which again I cannot blame him for. I have no idea how to even go about imagining how awful it must have been to witness that.
Shit.
He is a broken man.
Hopefully he can get back on track in some way.
Reading reviews of the gig they did is interesting. Most saw it as important and embraced it. One guy interviewed said he was constantly looking over his shoulder and eyeing the exits. Can’t imagine how terifying it must have been for him and others like him . Massive respect for going.
One track they do starts with a staccato rimshot like gunfire and they specifically decided not to play that. I figured when I read that they were doing that for the fans but watching that guy I suspect it was as much for the band as the crowd.
