How fucking lucky have Wham been?! Villa miss a pen and then have an injury time equaliser ruled out by VAR for the tiniest and most imperceptible offside.
Beat me to it!
Wham above us now
S’what VAR is for… correcting clear and obvious errors…
I wonder if they could put the onus back on the linesperson by adding an “umpires call” type scenario to offsides…not sure how it would work, just musing.
Fixed
Agreed. The assistant/ref’s view should form a soft decision which can only be overturned by clear, not minimal, evidence.
The problem with the lines system is that it looks precise and technical, but is flawed. Firstly, some of the margins being judged are within expected tolerance values given the impossibility of deciding precisely where the lines should be but secondly, and more importantly, the choice of freeze frame for the instant the ball is played is subjective. A fraction of a second either way makes a difference but the choice of exact timing never seems to be questioned. I would suggest that a range of at least three freeze frames should be examined, and unless they all show the same definitive result, on-field decision stands.
