Antonio Conte plotting Premier League raid: Chelsea boss is a big fan

Show/hide article…

The Blues boss is keen to splash the cash with Champions League football coming back to Stamford Bridge next season. And according to the Evening Standard, Conte wants to strengthen both wing-back positions.

“Antonio Conte has added former Chelsea ace Ryan Bertrand to his list of summer transfer targets” He wants there to be more competition for Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses. And Southampton star Bertrand has emerged as a new target. The left-back, 27, joined the Saints in 2015 for £10m from the Blues.

Bertrand penned a five-year deal with Southampton last summer and is valued at around £25m. The Standard add that Manchester City are also chasing the former Chelsea man.

Southampton boss Claude Puel urges England new boys Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse to continue their approach

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged Southampton’s new England internationals not to change the approach that earned them their senior debuts, and believes his club can benefit from the experience they will gain.

The manager recently watched Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse make their first Three Lions appearances, against Germany, and in the same squad in which Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster have long featured.

He is happy two of his finest players’ progress is being recognised by Gareth Southgate. He is also confident that it will further encourage their development, as long as they maintain the dedication that led to their first caps.

“I didn’t want to give them pressure,” said Frenchman Puel. "It’s important they keep a good attitude. The will to make progress every time, and to improve, is the most important thing.

"They are the same (in training since representing England). And I want them to stay with the same attitude, and humility.

"For example, Ward-Prowse stays at the end of the training sessions to continue to work, he doesn’t change anything. It’s the same for Nathan.

"It was important to perform and to continue this work. It was an opportunity for them, it was a fantastic thing for them, but they now come back to work, with good results.

“For the young players it was very interesting for them to see the national team, and important for the club also, because all this is a good response for their work at this club for many years.”

Puel’s positivity regarding his internationals’ involvement comes at a time when Everton’s Ronald Koeman has again been critical of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill, following injuries suffered by James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman.

Puel is already without the absent Virgil van Dijk, Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini for this Saturday’s home Premier League fixture with Bournemouth, but he said: "It was a good reward to see Nathan and James on the national team.

"This is great for the team and we need to continue that.

"It’s great, fantastic for the club, for them and all this we’ve done with a good feeling and focus about the Premier League and all the games.

“We have had 15 international players (away during the past international football break).”

Another international, Uruguay’s Martin Caceres, could make his Southampton debut on Saturday after the defender was declared available for the first time.

Wilshere could be recalled for Saints clash

Show/hide article…

BOURNEMOUTH could recall Jack Wilshere for tomorrow’s derby at St Mary’s.

The Arsenal loanee has started the last three games on the bench, but boss Eddie Howe today hinted he could bring Wilshere back into the team to face Saints.

“He is certainly in the mix, a player of his quality,” Howe said.

"Jack picked up an ankle injury against Manchester City and in the following games we have picked up some good results, so it has been difficult to change a winning team when it is performing so well.

“We know his qualities and he is ready to go if he is selected on Saturday.”

Bournemouth would move above Saints with a first ever away victory over their neighbours, and put themselves within touching distance of securing another campaign in the Premier League.

Howe, though, will take things one step at a time.

“From our perspective, it is a slightly different game, Southampton are the nearest club to us, so the supporters would feel the importance of this game and we respect that, we want to give them a win,” Howe said.

“It is a case of looking at the game, knowing its importance especially with the fixtures we have got to come beyond this one.”

Howe added: "We have had three really good results in our last three games, so there is some consistency there, but we know we have got a long way to go.

“Games like this one will define that, so we are looking for a good performance and then hopefully the result will follow.”

Opposition View: Eddie Howe

Show/hide article…

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has some history in his sights, as he prepares to bring his team to Southampton for tomorrow’s Premier League clash.

The Cherries have never won an away game against Saints, losing eight and drawing four in their previous 12 attempts.

They come into this latest south coast meeting in impressive form, though, having taken seven points from their last three matches.

“It’s a case of looking at the game, knowing its importance, especially with the games we’ve got to come,” said Howe.

"We’ve never won away at Southampton and we want to create history.

“From our perspective, it is a slightly different game. They’re the nearest club to us, so the supporters feel the importance of this game and we respect that.

“We acknowledge that it’s a difficult game and we want to get a result for the supporters.”

It was Saints who prevailed when the sides met earlier in the season, as Claude Puel’s men came from behind to win 3-1 at Vitality Stadium, but Howe intends to use that as motivation this weekend.

“It was difficult because of the result,” said the Cherries boss. “We played well in the first half, but in the second half Southampton were the better team. That lingers, so we want to put that right on Saturday.”

Stephens relishing Cherries test

Show/hide article…

After an international break with England Under-21s, which Stephens took a lot from in terms of his development, the 23-year-old is relishing a busier schedule.

“It was a good week away with England and I learnt a lot with the two games we played. They were really beneficial and it was good to see where we are at.

“It’s been a bit of a break (from the Premier League) and it’s been difficult for us because we’ve had a couple of two week breaks which make it hard to build momentum.

“I’m looking forward to Saturday and then we’ve got two more games in the next six days as well.

“Bournemouth are a good side who like to keep the ball and play nice football so I think it’ll be a good match on Saturday.

“They’ve had a few good results of late so I think it’ll be a really good game.”

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

It’s not just some south coast bragging rights that are at stake here. Both sides are level on points in the table, although Saints are ahead of their opponents on goal difference, having also played two games less.

A win for Claude Puel’s team, who begin the weekend in tenth, could move them up to ninth in the table.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Manolo Gabbiadini is set to miss the game, having not yet recovered from the groin injury he sustained in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham two weeks previously. Saints also have a lot of players returning from international duty this week, but Puel is hoping he will have no other fitness concerns.

Bournemouth: The Cherries have no new injury concerns from the international break, although Ryan Fraser is a doubt with a hamstring issue. Defender Tyrone Mings is suspended for the match, while Callum Wilson, Adam Federici and Rhoys Wiggins remain sidelined.

Southampton’s previous five:

Tottenham Hotspur (a) L 1-2

Watford (a) W 4-3

TOP PERFORMERS

Saints won’t have Manolo Gabbiadini this weekend, but they have plenty of attacking players in good form. Top scorers: Charlie Austin (9), Manolo Gabbiadini, Nathan Redmond (6)

Most assists: Dušan Tadić (6), James Ward-Prowse (5)

There’s no doubt who Bournemouth’s danger man is right now. Joshua King is enjoying a superb run in attack, scoring eight goals in his last eight appearances at club level. That included his hat-trick in the Cherries’ recent 3-2 home win over West Ham.

Top scorers: Joshua King (11), Callum Wilson (6)

The Reds are currently unbeaten in 16 Premier League derby games at Anfield and the last time they lost to their city rivals on home turf was in 1999.

Will it change on Saturday when the two meet? History suggests no, but all good things must come to an end at some point, right?

Here, talkSPORT looks at which team each Premier League club is CURRENTLY unbeaten against and the length of that run.

Southampton vs Bournemouth team news: Squads revealed, injuries and more

Show/hide article…

Martin Caceres could make his Southampton debut at home to Bournemouth after being declared fit for the first time.

The defender recently arrived as a free agent and will vie with Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens for selection in central defence, with long-term absentee Virgil van Dijk still out of action.

Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez are in contention to start up front after Manolo Gabbiadini, because of a groin injury, joined Charlie Austin - who has an injured shoulder - on the sidelines.

Bournemouth will check on the fitness of midfielder Ryan Fraser (hamstring).

Winger Junior Stanislas (groin) and midfielder Harry Arter (calf) both missed the win over Swansea before the international break, but are expected to be available, while French forward Lys Mousset has been carrying a hamstring problem.

Defender Tyrone Mings continues to serve his five-match suspension for a stamp on Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Forward Callum Wilson, goalkeeper Adam Federici and defender Rhoys Wiggins all continue their recoveries from knee injuries.

Newcastle will be a different test, says Fleming

Show/hide article…

The Magpies visit in the play-off section of the Under-18 Premier League table, and it will be the first time the two sides have met this season.

“I think it’s a good challenge,” explained Fleming.

“They play a little bit of a different way, as well. We’ve had a look at them and if they play as they have in the last few games it will be a slightly different test.

“It’s good to play against teams that you haven’t faced before though, because the lads will be coming against other players that they don’t know that much about.”

One of Fleming’s players, Jake Vokins, recently put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the club.

The left back signed on the day of his 17th birthday, and Fleming believes it is nothing less than he deserved.

“He’s been tremendous,” continued the manager.

“Last December we had a couple of injuries and didn’t have a left back for our FA Youth Cup game - he was playing left wing for the under-16s at the time and came in did great.

“He was probably one of the better players on the pitch that night and it’s all gone from there. Within a few games he was with our under-23s and has forced his way into the England set-up. Now he’s got his just rewards.”
