Southampton win damages Crystal Palace’s fight against relegation

Show/hide article…

Southampton secured their first home win since January to end Crystal Palace’s winning run and leave the Eagles firmly entrenched in the relegation mire.

Sam Allardyce was gunning for a fifth win in a row for the first time since 2006, when at Bolton. Having never lost a game at St Mary’s in the Premier League, he will have fancied his chances.

But the Saints should have secured victory long before Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse settled matters in the 84th and 85th minute.

Shane Long was the guilty party, missing four excellent chances in a match largely dominated by Southampton.

He twice should have had his team in front in the first ten minutes. First after 25 seconds as he latched on to Nathan Redmond’s pass before pulling his shot wide of the right post.

Then the Irishman was the recipient of a beautifully weighted pass from James Ward-Prowse but again snatched at his shot which drifted harmlessly wide.

Palace showed little as an attacking force in the opening stages but came close to scoring through Luka Milivojevic’s free-kick which just evaded Fraser Forster’s left post.

Barcelona target Cedric Soares was making useful inroads down Southampton’s right against Jeffrey Schlupp, deputising in the Eagles’ defence for the injured Patrick Van Aanholt.

The Portuguese crossed to the far post to Redmond whose header was brilliantly saved by the inform Wayne Hennessey.

But Palace looked to have ridden the storm and began to threaten more regularly.

Wilfried Zaha came close to scoring from Christian Benteke’s knock-down but saw his volley deflected over by Oriol Romeu.

But Spurs target Zaha did feature in a brilliant Palace counter attack which put them in front.

The Ivorian fed Jason Puncheon, who in turn found Andros Townsend and his low cross was thumped home at close range by Benteke, his 11th goal of the season.

The half ended amongst a sea of protests as Redmond drew Puel’s side level in the final moments.

Southampton’s French manager was furious as referee Roger East waved away two penalty claims before Redmond’s leveler.

The first came as Schlupp appeared to handle Dusan Tadic’s shot before the official waved away Long’s appeals as he tumbled under Milivojevic’s challenge.

The controversy was not over as Saints captain Steven Davis bundled over Zaha before crossing to Redmond who scored at the far post with Sam Allardyce this time appealing to the fourth official, Lee Probert.

Both sets of players left the field voicing their trenchant criticisms to the referee whilst the home crowd jeered.

Just as they had in the first half, Southampton came out strongly in the second. England in internationals Redmond and James Ward-Prowse combined only for the latter to have his shot blocked by Mamadou Sakho before Soares dragged the rebound wide.

Long then had his third chance to score. This time it was Tadic who found his run but his chipped finish found the roof of the net rather than the back of it.

Neither team looked like settling for the draw and the Eagles almost restored their lead through the unlikely source of Martin Kelly who struck the near post following Benteke’s knock down.

But Long’s fourth attempt did not bring him the desired result as again he collected Tadic’s clever pass only to be foiled at close quarters by the impressive Hennessey.

Finally Southampton made the breakthrough as Redmond accelerated down the left and crossed for Jack Stephens who helped the ball on to fellow centre back Yoshida to score at the far post.

Puel’s side sealed matters a minute later when the impressive Tadic fed Soares who crossed for Ward-Prowse to smash home at close range.

Southampton 3-1 Crystal Palace match report

Show/hide article…

Wilfried Zaha lived up to both his reputations - wizard of the dribble and fall guy – as Palace’s surge towards safety hit a roadblock.

Two late goals, in as many minutes, from Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse brought the Eagles’ revival spluttering to a halt.

And nobody looked more aggrieved, in the glut of missed chances at both ends, than Zaha.

Architect of a splendid opening goal, and then the aggrieved party on the deck as the Eagles were pegged back, this was another hard-luck story for the most-fouled player in the Premier League.

For all his exotic gifts and Harley Davidson turn of speed, the Ivory Coast winger has acquired a reputation for going down more readily than some of the heavyweight stiffs fed to Anthony Joshua.

In the case of Watford mascot Harry the Hornet, he has even managed to fall out with a man dressed as an insect.

Now Palace must reboot for a booby-trapped run-in. Like Little Red Riding Hood, Sam Allardyce is not yet out of the woods.

On sunlit spring evenings on the south coast, finding out Big Sam is coming out to play is like discovering a walrus in your jacuzzi: Potentially good fun but usually uncomfortable.

Allardyce had never lost at St Mary’s in the Premier League as Palace rode into town on the back of four straight wins, including a contender for upset of the season at Chelsea. He has now.

Palace have a few dim supporters who vandalise their own team bus, and a vaguely sinister cult who dress in black, but they generate a decent atmosphere wherever they go – and there was enough goalmouth incident to give the songbook a full airing.

When Zaha’s incisive run opened up Southampton after 31 minutes, from Andros Townsend’s low centre Christian Benteke volleyed only his third League goal since December into the roof of the net - the Belgian’s fifth goal in his last five games against Saints.

To outrage among home supporters, referee Roger East was determined not test the repaired penalty spot where Bournemouth’s Harry Arter came to grief at the weekend.

East somehow missed Jeff Schlupp’s handball, which was more blatant than a left hook, but on the stroke of half time it was Palace who were complaining loudest as Zaha cried wolf once too often.

East ignored his theatrical fall as he tried to usher the ball out of play, Steven Davis picked his pocket and Palace were still waiting in vain for the whistle when Nathan Redmond volleyed the equaliser at the far post.

Redmond turned provider for Yoshida to put Saints deservedly in front before Ward-Prowse settled all arguments with an assured finish.

Southampton 3-1 Crystal Palace: Late Saints strikes keep Eagles in trouble

Show/hide article…

Two late goals saw Southampton come from behind to beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

The visitors took a 31st-minute lead through Christian Benteke’s fifth goal in his last five Premier League games against the Saints.

However, Southampton responded with strikes from Nathan Redmond just before half-time, and Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse in the final four minutes of the game.

As a result, Claude Puel’s side have eased any relegation fears they may have had leading up to the game, but the Eagles are just three points clear of the drop zone and still deep in trouble.

Southampton were without left-back Ryan Bertrand and striker Manolo Gabbiadini, while the Italian’s possible replacement in attack, Sofiane Boufal, was also out.

The Eagles, meanwhile, were unable to call upon the services of Scott Dann after the experienced central defender sustained knee ligament damage in Saturday’s win at Chelsea.

The visitors were missing the injured trio of James Tomkins, Patrick van Aanholt and Loic Remy as well for the trip to the South Coast.

Holding midfielder Luka Milivojevic almost opened the scoring with a 13th-minute free-kick that beat the wall and Fraser Forster in Southampton’s goal, only to strike the outside of the post.

However, in an end-to-end affair, the home side then went desperately close to making the breakthrough via unlikely means as Redmond rose high at the far post to meet Cedric’s right-wing cross with a firm header, but Wayne Hennessey did well to claw his effort round the post.

Ten minutes later, the Eagles took the lead through a lovely team goal involving first Jeff Schlupp and Wilfried Zaha down the left flank, before the ball was worked to the opposite wing via Jason Puncheon and Andros Townsend.

The England international then drilled across the six-yard box an inviting centre from which Benteke could not miss as the striker scored his third goal of the season against the Saints.

Southampton levelled matters in controversial circumstances in the final minute of the half as James Ward-Prowse chased down a lost cause near the right touchline, before appearing to barge Zaha over.

Referee Roger East saw nothing wrong with the challenge, though, allowing the Saints midfielder to swing a cross towards Redmond at the back post and the winger found the back of the net with a scuffed effort.

Both teams had chances to retake the lead after the break, with Martin Kelly striking the post for Palace, while Shane Long spurned two wonderful openings for Southampton after being played clean through on goal.

However, as the Saints continued to push forward, eventually their late pressure told as Redmond got free to the left byline and crossed for Yoshida to tap home at the far post after his central-defensive partner Jack Stephens had failed to make contact with the centre.

The game was then over as a contest 60 seconds later as Dusan Tadic sent Cedric scampering down the right flank and the Portuguese’s inch-perfect cross was tucked home by the waiting Ward-Prowse six yards out.

Southampton 3-1 Crystal Palace: Saints come from behind with two late goals

Show/hide article…

THIS win was as welcome as Saints’ new penalty spot.

The Northam End’s goalmouth had a new look with the turf clearly relaid where it had given way so dramatically under Harry Arter’s standing foot on Saturday – three months after Harry Kane suffered a similar fate.

It was not put to use last night, despite strong calls for a handball against Crystal Palace in the first half.

But Saints were sure-footed enough in open play to clinch their first St Mary’s win since January, thanks to two late goals.

Christian Benteke gave Crystal Palace a 31st-minute lead following a wonderful move from the visitors.

But Nathan Redmond volleyed Saints’ equaliser on the stroke of half-time and Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse scored in the 84th and 85th minutes to secure a much-needed win.

Claude Puel made two changes to the team that drew at home to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday with Shane Long coming in for Jay Rodriguez and Sam McQueen replacing Ryan Bertrand.

Palace, captained by ex-Saint Jason Puncheon, arrived at St Mary’s just an hour before kick- off but were unchanged following Saturday’s 2-1 success at champions-elect Chelsea – their fourth successive win.

Long missed the target on three occasions before Luka Milivojevic whipped Palace a free-kick, against the outside of the post from 25 yards.

Saints forced the first save of the night on 20 minutes when the diminutive Redmond jumped high above Palace right-back Joel Ward to meet Cedric’s cross, which he headed downward at the far post.

Wayne Hennessy was equal to it, pulling off the save of the night by diving low to his right and palming it on to the post.

With Andros Townsend, Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha providing a formidable triumvirate behind Benteke, it was easy to see why Palace have been so ruthless of late.

Benteke, fresh from his Stamford Bridge silencer, had a shot blocked by Yoshida after turning Stephens sublimely in the Saints penalty area.

Then Zaha’s powerful 12-yard strike cannoned behind for a corner off Romeu.

It was a warning of what was to come.

In the 31st minute Palace scored a sublime opener involving each of their fabulous front foursome.

Zaha began the move by weaving his way across the edge of the Saints area. After evading Romeu he passed to Puncheon, whose slide-rule pass to Townsend was weighted to perfection.

With Stephens playing catch-up, the cross was delivered into the six-yard box, where Benteke was lurking between Yoshida and Cedric.

For a predator like Benteke, it was easy prey. Instinctively, he stretched out his left foot and stabbed a volley - his 16th goal of the season - past the helpless Fraser Forster.

When Benteke headed down a Townsend cross from the other flank, Zaha should have done better than half-volley it into the Chapel Stand.

But Saints ended the first half the stronger and could have led at half-time, had one of their two appeals for a penalty been given.

The Northam End’s penalty spot was particularly conspicuous last night. It was of a much darker hue, but referee Roger East saw no reason for it to be used.

That was despite the ball clearly coming off Palace defender Jeffrey Schlupp’s left hand as the Ghanaian tussled for it with Tadic inside the area.

East was the subject of more Saints wrath when he waved play on after Long went down under what, in fairness, was a heavy-duty shoulder charge from Milivojevic.

No matter. Saints were level in the 45th minute, when Redmond fired past two Palace defenders at the far post, following Davis’s cross from the right.

The England man had time to control the ball on his chest and his left-footed volley, while not the cleanest of hits, had enough on it to go past four despairing Palace defenders and Hennessy as Palace argued Davis had fouled Zaha in regaining possession on the touchline.

The excellent Redmond created the first chance of the second half. After beating Ward his low, left-footed cross was fired goalwards by Ward-Prowse but blocked by Sakho. Cedric missed the target with the rebound.

Townsend reacted with clever improvisation to Puncheon’s lofted ball, hooking it on the net from 12 yards before Long chipped wide from Tadic’s through ball.

Davis was dispossessed by Martin Kelly after a surging run into the area took him inside Sakho.

Excellent chances fell to both sides within a minute of each other.

Following Benteke’s towering knock down, Kelly hooked a half-volley against the post from six yards.

Then, from Tadic’s through ball, Long beat the offside trap only for Hennessy to claw his attempt away in the ensuing one-on-one.

Hennessy also dived low to his left to turn behind Romeu’s 25-yarder before clutching Yoshida’s header to his right.

Davis was denied by successive goal-line clearances - a right-footer blocked by Sakho and a first-time left-footer stopped by Delaney – following Tadic’s cross.

It seemed it was not going to be Saints’ night as the captain received treatment following his collision with Delaney.

But two goals in as many minutes turned the game on its head When Stephens popped up to divert Redmond’s cross to the far post, Yoshida stabbed in.

Then Ward-Prowse netted his second goal in three games, following Cedric’s run into the box. Forster secured the points by tipping over a Puncheon free-kick in injury time.

Claude Puel targets top-half Premier League finish for Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s objective for the rest of the season is to seal a top-half finish in the Premier League after their 3-1 win against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, according to manager Claude Puel.

The Saints came from behind to beat relegation-threatened Palace at St Mary’s, a victory that saw the home side move back into the top half of the table after a recent run of poor results.

And now Puel wants his team - who are sitting in ninth, albeit with games in hand on their rivals - to build on that win and finish strongly in their final nine matches of the campaign, starting at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

“We did a fantastic game, we dominated this team with many possibilities,” he said. "We had a lot of chances without being clinical and we found a solution at the end, which was good reward for all the players because we kept going in the game. It was a fantastic game and we deserved this result.

"But all the team kept going, which is really important, and we deserved this result. At the end it was a shame this draw because of all the opportunities we had and I also thought we could have had three penalties in the first half. So it was a difficult scenario, but at the end all the squad are happy with the result.

"This was a very important game because other teams behind us came back, so it was important to take these points. After we have to pay against West Bromwich and it is an objective to try and get a good result away against this team who are a difficult team with confidence. To come back at West Bromwich is a big objective, so let’s see this possibility in the next game at West Bromwich.

"Every game it is difficult to know the scenario of each game, but the [EFL Cup] final and the other games were always with quality with good play and spirit.

“Sometimes we had good results, sometimes it was not enough. But I think we stayed with a good performance and it is now important to stay in the top half of the table and this is the objective for the moment.”

Southampton’s victory would have been a lot more comfortable had Shane Long not spurned a number of presentable openings, especially in the second half when the striker was twice faced with just Wayne Hennessey to beat, only to fluff his lines on each occasion.

“He was unlucky with different possibilities, but he works very well for the team and gives opportunities, good runs and movements behind the defenders,” said Puel.

“It was a good game for Shane, but unlucky with his chances as he had many situations with Dusan [Tadic], but it is a shame.”

Southampton 3-1 Crystal Palace - Puel sweats on Bertrand fitness but is delighted after victory

Show/hide article…

SAINTS boss Claude Puel is hoping that Ryan Bertrand is fit for this week end’s trip to West Bromwich Albion after missing last night’s win against Crystal Palace.

England international Bertrand had a hamstring problem so was replaced by Sam McQueen at left-back.

But Puel is hoping he is ok for the trip to the Hawthorns.

The Saints manager said: “He felt something with his hamstring and he cannot take the risk.”

Asked if Bertrand will be available to take on the Baggies, Puel added: “I hope so, we’ll see.”

Saints will travel to the Black Country buoyed by last night’s win.

“It wasn’t just a good result, it was a fantastic game for us with quality and many chances,” said Puel.

“It was important to score at the end and win this game after all these opportunities. We could have had a penalty in the first half but the team kept going with intensity, quality and fantastic work.

“I’m happy for the players because it was one of our most consistent games at home.”

Crystal Palace boss Sam Allardyce was furious that Saints first goal was allowed to stand.

Asked if he thought Saints were fortunate Nathan Redmond’s equaliser was not disallowed because of a Steven Davis foul on Wilfried Zaha in the build-up to the cross that created the chance, Puel said: “Perhaps, but there were possibilities for us. We kept going. I’m happy for the players because their attitude and quality was fantastic.”

Puel believes Shane Long’s work rate deserved a first goal in five games “He did fantastic work for the team to create good opportunities for us. His movement made it difficult for their defenders, he could easily have been the difference.”

With Long not firing after coming in for Jay Rodriguez, it needed a rare goal from Maya Yoshida to put Saints ahead.

“It’s not just about strikers, for me 11 all attack and all 11 defend and can all score,” said Puel. “Maya is very important for us. He’s a strong, intelligent personality and has improved with confidence. Without [Virgil] Van Dijk we need a strong man with personality like him.”
