Liverpool 2 Bournemouth 2: Jurgen Klopp’s tactical shift backfires as Josh King hits late equaliser

Show/hide article…

Liverpool must hope their season’s aspirations do not come to be moulded by 18 minutes against Bournemouth.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were 3-1 up with 14 minutes left at The Vitality Stadium last December, but somehow managed to lose 4-3.

Last night they offered a pale, but damaging imitation by squandering a 2-1 advantage with just four minutes remaining at Anfield, their three centre-backs unable to prevent Josh King turning and drilling past Simon Mignolet for Eddie Howe’s second precious away point of the week.

As on the south coast when Liverpool were still harbouring title rather than top four ambitions, Klopp’s side had only itself to blame.

On this occasion, the manager’s vow to adopt caution in an effort to edge his side to the points tally required to keep the Manchester clubs and Arsenal at bay backfired.

Philippe Coutinho, who joined former Middlesbrough winger Juninho as the highest scoring Brazilian in English football with his 29th Liverpool goal, was substituted for centre-back Joel Matip. Divock Origi had just headed the home side ahead but the momentum shift the home side had enjoyed since half-time came to a halt.

Southampton replace penalty spot after Kane and Arter sky spot-kicks

Show/hide article…

Southampton have replaced the turf around the penalty spot where both Harry Arter and Harry Kane skied spot-kicks at St Mary’s.

Arter fired the ball into the stands during Bournemouth’s 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday in a near-carbon copy of a bad miss from the Tottenham forward three months earlier.

The turf underneath the taker’s standing foot looked to give way on both occasions, with the two players giving disapproving looks at the ground after their humiliating miss.

‘It might be a Harry thing – Harrys aren’t meant to take penalties at St Mary’s, especially at that end,’ Arter joked after the match. ‘So next time round, if your name is Harry, don’t take a penalty!’

The South Coast club have taken action to repair the damaged area – completely replacing the turf in the penalty box before their clash with Crystal Palace.

Claude Puel’s side took on the Eagles having won only two matches in all competitions since January.

Palace, meanwhile, are on a four-match unbeaten run under Sam Allardyce - a set of results that has helped lift them away from the relegation zone.

Southampton 3-1 Crystal Palace: Ward-Prowse seals comeback

Show/hide article…

Sam Allardyce tore into the officials after his Crystal Palace side lost against Southampton to keep them nervously amongst the relegation candidates.

Palace were a goal ahead through Christian Benteke when, a minute before half-time, Steven Davis went through the back of Wilfried Zaha defending the ball beside his own penalty area.

The linesman allowed play to continue, Davis crossed and Nathan Redmond equalised.

The Palace winger — like a petulant teenager who overreacts when they don’t get their own way — went berserk when the whistle blew for half-time and had to be guided from the pitch by Allardyce as he tried to remonstrate with the officials.

‘It’s a diabolical decision that the assistant didn’t make on Zaha,’ Allardyce said. 'I can’t for the life of me find why he’s not seen Wilfried in control of the ball completely bowled over by the opposite player from behind.

‘It baffles me how a professional at this level can get such a simple decision wrong. This wasn’t difficult, it was so easy. It cost us not being 1-0 up at half-time.’

Southampton manager Claude Puel conceded that Allardyce might’ve been right, but pointed out their own grievances. ‘We can have three penalties in the first half and a player sent off as it was the last player defending against Shane Long. If we look at fault or no fault we have our own.’

Allardyce had never lost in the Premier League against Southampton at St Mary’s and his ninth game looked to be concluding in a draw until two goals in two minutes, from Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse, ended that run.

The quality of Palace’s 31st-minute goal leaves one bewildered by how they are in this predicament. It started inside their own half and swept from left to right; Zaha cutting in from the flank, passing to Jason Puncheon who laid off to Andros Townsend and his low, hard cross was diverted in practically on the goal line by Christian Benteke.

‘Had we played like we played for the first goal this season we would’ve scored more,’ Allardyce admitted.

Long missed four decent chances to score, two before Palace’s goal and two after Redmond levelled. ‘He wasn’t very clinical,’ Puel said, ‘but he did fantastic work for the team, his runs put defenders in difficult positions.’

Palace left themselves glaringly open at the back, especially for an Allardyce team and one trying to avoid the drop.

They went gung-ho in attack and often left Mamadou Sakho back to cut everything out. If goals were awarded for sliding, full-stretch blocks the centre-back would’ve had a hatful.

Not even he could prevent Yoshida and Ward-Prowse converting cut backs from either flank in the 84th and 85th minutes.

‘We should’ve had more responsibility as a team,’ Allardyce added. ‘When we go to Arsenal next Monday night we’ve got to get a result.’

Big pressure he’ll hope is handled better than the officials on Wednesday night.

That was an important win, says Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

The 22-year-old, who completed the 3-1 scoreline for Saints, also took time to praise the character shown by his teammates.

“It was a very important win for us,” started Ward-Prowse.

“The sign of a good team is a good run of home form and hopefully this can be the start of that for us.

“It’s not nice going behind in a game but I think it shows the character that we’ve got in the dressing room, and the way the fans got behind us to spur us on was superb.”

The win against Palace was Saints’ first home victory since January, as they now move up to 9th in the Premier League table.

And with games in hand, Ward-Prowse explained that the squad still have high hopes for the rest of the season.

“Of course we want to get back into Europe,” he continued.

“That’s a big ambition, of course, and whether that’s achievable or not is down to us – we have to win a lot of games.

“But we’ve got a game in hand so we have to make sure that we take full advantage of that and then we can start to move back up the league.”

Southampton 3 Crystal Palace 1: Winning run ends as Sam Allardyce’s side throw away lead

Show/hide article…

Sam Allardyce’s target for Crystal Palace in the final eight games is simple: “more points than games played, which means we’ll get more than 38 points, which will be enough.”

With Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United to play before the end of the season, Allardyce cannot yet sleep easily.

The run of four wins before this aberration may still prove enough to keep them up but the home games against Burnley, Leicester at Hull will not make for relaxed viewing at Selhurst.

“For me, the point would have been like a win tonight, having not played very well. While both teams missed a lot of chances of both ends today, we’re the ones who’ve not taken care to get the point we needed, which would have been huge to us,” said Allardyce.

before insisting that the Eagles much earn at least a point in their next fixture, against Arsenal on Monday.
