Rodriguez completes West Brom move

Show/hide article…

Rodriguez departs after five years at St Mary’s, moving to the West Midlands to seek more regular first-team football.

The forward arrived at Saints from his hometown side of Burnley in 2012. He went on to make a total of 126 appearances and scoring 35 goals in his time with the club.

Everyone at Southampton Football Club would like to thank Jay for his hard work, dedication and the significant contribution he made to our success over the past five years. He leaves with our very best wishes for the future.

West Brom complete £12m deal for Premier League striker

Show/hide article…

The 27-year-old England striker is keen to play more regularly and new boss Mauricio Pellegrino was happy to allow him to leave the club.

The switch, for a player that Baggies boss Tony Pulis has chased for over a year, was concluded on Sunday.

Newcastle and Burnley have been interested in the forward who started just nine Premier League games over the past season under Claude Puel.

But Rodriguez was keen to work with Pulis and has sealed his move to The Hawthorns.

Jay Rodriguez completes £12m move from Southampton to West Brom

Show/hide article…

West Brom have completed the £12million signing of Jay Rodriguez from Southampton on a four-year deal.

The forward, who has been capped once by England, scored 35 goals in an injury-affected five-year spell on the south coast.

Rodriguez, 27, moves to the Black Country in search of more first team football and becomes the Baggies’ joint-second most expensive player in their history.

West Brom had made two failed attempts to sign the forward in the past and, after finally sealing his move to the Hawthorns, Rodriguez said: ‘After one or two ‘near misses’ I’m absolutely buzzing to be here.’

‘The most important thing for any player is to be wanted – and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear,’ he told the club’s website.

‘I’m genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion’s stature. The team is full of top players and it’s pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads.’

The forward was Southampton’s record signing when he joined from Burnley for £6m in 2012 and his impressive performances earned him a call up to the England squad under Roy Hodgson a year later.

But Rodriguez’s spell on the south coast was interrupted by a couple of serious injuries that kept him out for a total of 75 matches.

The striker spent more than a year on the sidelines after rupturing his cruciate ligament in 2014 before requiring ankle surgery during the 2015/16 season.

He started only nine Premier League matches under Claude Puel last season and on Sunday Southampton confirmed the 27-year-old’s departure, wishing him well at West Brom.

‘Everyone at Southampton Football Club would like to thank Jay for his hard work, dedication and the significant contribution he made to our success over the past five years,’ a statement read. ‘He leaves with our very best wishes for the future.’

West Brom sign Jay Rodriguez from Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Brom have completed the signing of striker Jay Rodriguez from Southampton on a four-year contract.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that Rodriguez has joined the Baggies for an initial £12m, with the deal potentially rising to £15m.

The Hawthorns side chose a novel way to announce his arrival - responding to a tweet from a fan asking if they had signed anyone yet, Albion replied with a four-second clip of Rodriguez saying “yes we have”.

The 27-year-old struggled with injuries after joining the Saints from boyhood club Burnley in 2012 and failed to secure a regular first-team place under former managers Ronald Koeman and Claude Puel.

He scored 35 goals in 126 appearances for Southampton, who are now managed by Mauricio Pellegrino, after spending five years at St Mary’s and becomes Tony Pulis’ first signing of the summer transfer window after West Brom had tried and failed to recruit him twice in the past.

“After one or two ‘near misses’ I’m absolutely buzzing to be here,” Rodriguez told the club’s website.

"The most important thing for any player is to be wanted - and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear.

“I’m genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion’s stature. The team is full of top players and it’s pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads.”

Jay Rodriguez joins West Bromwich Albion from Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Bromwich Albion have signed Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez, in a deal believed to worth approximately £12m.

The Baggies have long been liked with the 27-year-old England international and chose a novel way to announce his arrival.

Responding to a tweet from a fan asking if they had signed anyone yet, Albion replied with a four-second clip of Rodriguez saying “yes we have”.

Saints say they have received an undisclosed fee for Rodriguez who made 126 appearances for them after joining from Burnley in 2012.

His time on the south coast was interrupted heavily by a serious knee injury which ruled him out for 11 months - a time which included the 2014 World Cup.

Rodriguez had made his England debut in a friendly against Chile in November 2013 and was in contention for a place in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the tournament until the injury.

Rodriguez ‘buzzing’ after joining West Brom

Show/hide article…

West Bromwich Albion have completed their first signing of the summer with the capture of Jay Rodriguez from Southampton.

The 27-year-old forward has signed a four-year contract with the Baggies for an undisclosed fee.

Rodriguez, who started his career at Burnley, made 104 Premier League appearances in his five years at St Mary’s Stadium, scoring 26 goals.

“After one or two ‘near misses’ I’m absolutely buzzing to be here,” Rodriguez told wba.co.uk, referring to Albion’s two thwarted attempts to recruit him.

“The most important thing for any player is to be wanted – and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear.”

Rodriguez will meet up with his new team-mates on Monday when the players report back for training to prepare for the club’s eighth consecutive Premier League campaign.

Their pre-season friendly schedule will include a trip to Hong Kong where they will take part in the Premier League Asia Trophy, on 19 and 22 July, along with Liverpool, Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

Rodriguez completes £14m move

Show/hide article…

Jay Rodriguez has ended five years at St Mary’s by completing a £14m move to West Brom.

The Saints striker has been allowed to move on after telling the club he wanted a fresh start.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has been a long-time admirer of Rodriguez, and came close to signing him twice in recent times.

On this occasion he has finally landed his man with the 27-year-old bringing down the curtain on his time at Saints.

The Daily Echo understands that it was agreed that it would be in everybody’s best interests for Rodriguez to move on to try and get his career going again.

If he were to have remained at Saints then he would have been behind Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin in the pecking order with Shane Long and Sam Gallagher, who has just signed a new long-term contract with the club, also as direct competition.

Rodriguez believes he desperately needs to be playing on a regular basis if he is to stand any chance of reviving former glories, and West Brom have offered him that opportunity.

He joined Saints from Burnley for £7m in 2012, and really made a name for himself in the 2013/14 season under Mauricio Pochettino, where he scored 17 goals and earned to date his only England cap.

Rodriguez seemed on the verge of a place in the World Cup squad but was cut down in his prime when he tore his cruciate ligament in a game against Manchester City at the start of April 2014.

A number of complications followed his initial surgery, which meant he was ruled out for around 16 months.

Several comebacks came and went, with Rodriguez also requiring surgery on a foot injury.

Last season he was reduced to being a bit part squad player, and the prospects for next season were even bleaker with less games likely due to the club’s failure to qualify for European football.

That led Saints to agree to the player’s request to move on as a gesture of goodwill for his time and effort with the club.

However, they have also managed to negotiate a good deal for the player with £14m seen at the club as representing decent value for somebody on the fringes of the squad.

Lloyd Isgrove: Barnsley sign winger after Southampton release

Show/hide article…

Barnsley have signed winger Lloyd Isgrove on a three-year deal after he was released by Southampton.

Isgrove, 24, spent time on loan with the Tykes in 2015-16 and scored in the play-off final as they won promotion to the Championship.

Boss Paul Heckingbottom told the club website: "Lloyd is a great lad and we are all glad to see him back here.

“Once we knew there was a possibility of this deal happening, it was a no brainer.”

West Brom complete signing of Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for initial £12m fee

West Brom have completed the signing of Jay Rodriguez from Southampton

The Baggies have landed the 27-year-old forward for an initial £12m fee - potentially rising to £15m - at the third time of asking.

Southampton snubbed attempts from West Brom to sign Rodriguez last summer and in January.

It is a fresh start for Rodriguez, who has struggled for first-team football since suffering a serious knee injury in 2014, and he is excited to get going under Tony Pulis.

“After one or two ‘near misses’ I’m absolutely buzzing to be here,” he said.

"The most important thing for any player is to be wanted – and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join.

"That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear.
