How Southampton prepare youngsters for PL2

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Under-23 and Under-18 squads may have just come had their summer break, but they could not rest of during their holidays after being handed a detailed training programme to follow before they started pre-season training on Thursday.

Each of the Saints youngsters received their training schedule on an app on their phone, so both they and their coaches could monitor their progress before they went through intense testing procedures to gauge their fitness levels, which occurred on their first day back.

After his pre-season testing, PL2 defender Ollie Cook told southamptonfc.com in the video below: “It looks like we all maintained ourselves really well over the summer, had a good holiday and come back fresh and ready to go to meet this challenge.

“We have all got very detailed programmes. It looks like everyone’s stuck to them well, which is a credit to us and a credit to the staff for giving them to us.”

Tom Henson, lead Academy strength & conditioning coach, put them through their paces with a mixture of drills testing strength, power and aerobic fitness, pushing the players to the limit so they get maximum heart rates to base their pre-season schedule on.

“Particularly at the PDP phase, they’ve had an app and they’ve just had programmes that pop up,” Henson said. “It tells them when they’ve got to do a session, they fill it in and it’s got all their details on there.

“Everybody looks in more or less the same shape, so they’ve all at least had a good crack at the programme. And obviously I follow most of them on social media, so I can see who is and who isn’t!”

LAWRIE MAC: Chin up Nathan. It was a save, not a miss

Show/hide article…

It was sad to see the England under21-s fail to get to the European Championships final.

As ever Germany turned out to be a very difficult opponent, with most of the talk even before the game over whether it would go penalties. Of course, that’s exactly what happened.

Unfortunately two of our team missed, one of them being Nathan Redmond.

Pictures at the end of the game showed how downcast he was and the morning after I happened to be in an airport waiting for a plane, and was surrounded by football supporters of many different teams.

Their main questions to me were ‘how do you handle a player after a situation like that?’ I have to say my reaction to all the headlines about the penalty being missed for me is they are inaccurate.

When we think of Chris Waddle his penalty was missed because it was off target.

I would sit the player down as soon as pre-season training started and say ‘you didn’t miss the penalty, the goalkeeper saved it. The headlines in Germany would not be about your miss, they would have been about his saves.’

Obviously he has to have some praise because it was an excellent save, so let’s get Nathan back on to a positive footing to look back over a successful career so far when it comes to playing at the younger England levels.

He is probably one of the few out of that squad who we will hopefully see in the full England team in the future along with James Ward-Prowse.

But as I’ve said before, what about the rest of the squad?

At one time they would have automatically have been looked upon as future internationals and would have without a doubt all be seen in the upcoming season on the TV playing for their club’s first teams.

We know that in the case of the players from last week’s semi-finalists, the Cup winning under-20s and the Toulon team, most will go back to play in reserve teams or be sent out on loan.

Chin up Nathan. Everyone is proud of what you have done so far and the fact that their goalkeeper had a good day shouldn’t detract from your ability, and always remember you didn’t miss. He saved.

But as we all know down here, it’s not so much that but ‘please play some attractive, attacking football.’

While we know defending is a vital part of the game, it’s not the whole thing, and people work hard to find enough money to come to every match hoping to go home talking with excitement about the goals, the near misses, the shots, the many passes etc.

It will be interesting to see the reaction of the players to the new manager because some of them will undoubtedly have felt sorry for the previous boss, even though financially he will not have any worries.

The new manager will have to win players over as soon as possible, bearing in mind the numbers in the squads these days are more than double what they used to be.

One good thing for the new man was the fact that Les Reed came out with a positive statement this week that none of the players who have been linked with being transferred will be leaving the club.

Well done Les, that was a massive boost because we have become famous over recent seasons for brining players in at one price and moving them on for a big profit.

Les has intimated that that is now not the situation and any players going will only be ones who the club think they can do without.

I can understand the agents, who of course have become an integral part of the game, not being too happy as obviously when their player moves they make more money, and with all that rubbish about Mr van Dijk going on strike it should be remembered both the player and agent were delighted when they were given a six year contract only a year ago.

Surely the message will have got home by the beginning of the season to forget the gossip and the rumours and pull together to give the new manager a big welcome on the first day of the season.

Portugal can win playoff without Cristiano Ronaldo - Cedric Soares

Show/hide article…

MOSCOW – Portugal defender Cedric Soares has said Sunday’s Confederations Cup third-place playoff against Mexico is an opportunity to show the European champions can flourish without captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo left the Portugal camp after the semifinal defeat to Chile on Wednesday to meet his new-born twins, with the Portuguese football association and coach Fernando Santos giving their permission.

Southampton’s Cedric said on Saturday that others could step up in his absence, telling a news conference: "When we have Cristiano we are clearly stronger, it’s logical.

“But we have players with the same quality and we will try to demonstrate our worth against Mexico.”

Cedric added that Ronaldo had spoken to the squad before departing the camp and said it was “commendable” that he had stayed until the semifinal, with his children reported to have been born on June 8.

Portugal will be without Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro, who has reportedly travelled back to Portugal to continue rehabilitation work on his right ankle.

Manchester City’s Bernando Silva is another doubt, with the winger not having taken part in training on Saturday.

Santos and his side have been criticised for some of their performances in Russia, but the coach said: "I know about the criticism and am fine with it.

“If there is criticism relating to the team … it was this team that gave Portuguese football one of its greatest achievements, if not its biggest, at national team level.”

Saints sign Bednarek

Show/hide article…

The Poland Under-21 international has agreed a five-year-deal at St Mary’s, becoming the club’s first signing of the summer.

Saints’ first-team squad will return for pre-season on Monday, but Bednarek’s involvement in the Under-21 European Championship earlier this month means he will link up with his new teammates later in July.

The 21-year-old was a regular in the Lech side that finished third in the Polish top-flight last term, with the centre-back having represented his country at every youth level from under-16s upwards.

Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential.

“We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development.

“This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino’s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position.

“Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.”

Jan Bednarek said: “I am so happy that I could join a club like Southampton. This is the moment I have worked for that makes my dreams come true. It only gives me motivation to work hard, to show my skills and to help Southampton to get better and better.

“I think it’s a good step for me, because I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players, so I can improve here. I think it will be a good move for me.”

Stephens: I want to repay the club

Show/hide article…

Having signed a new five-year deal, Jack Stephens now wants to repay Southampton for the support they have shown him.

The 23-year-old also admitted that it was not a hard decision to commit his long-term future to the club.

“I love it here,” started Stephens.

“It’s a great club and we’ve enjoyed some good times here. Hopefully now we can push on and have so more good times together.

“I know how much support the club has given me and I am very grateful for it. I just want to keep developing now and hopefully repay them.”

Stephens will return for pre-season under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino later in July, due to his involvement with England at the Under-21 European Championship.

And he is looking forward to learning from the Argentine, who was also a centre-back during his playing days.

“I think it is always going to be a positive that the manager played in the position that I do,” he continued.

“Hopefully he can help me develop and pass on his experiences to me to help me become a better player.”

Gallagher: I’ve grown up a lot

Show/hide article…

The 21-year-old put pen to paper on a new four-year deal with the club this week, following a successful loan with Blackburn Rovers last season.

“I’ve been here since I was 16, which is quite a long time when you think about it,” started Gallagher.

“I’ve definitely grown up a lot in that time, especially over the last year. I have turned more from feeling like a young player to feeling like a first team player.

“That is the sort of form and attitude that I would like to bring to the club this year.”

Gallagher will report back for pre-season on Monday, alongside the rest of Mauricio Pellegrino’s men – bar those who have been involved in internationals this summer.

And the young striker is hoping to make an impression on the new Saints boss.

“You always get that feeling before pre-season: that it is a fresh start and everybody is out there to impress,” he continued.

“I will be trying to do that as well. To come back in good shape and hopefully show the manager and everyone what I can do."

Southampton defender Cédric finished his Confederations Cup campaign with Portugal in third.

Fernando Santos’s team beat Mexico 2-1 after extra-time to win the third-place match in Moscow, as Pepe’s last minute equaliser was followed by a successful spot kick from substitute Adrien Silva in the additional period.

Cédric was an unused substitute for the game, as he was given a rest following a significant involvement in the tournament.

Jay Rodriguez: West Brom sign striker from Southampton in £12m deal

Show/hide article…

West Bromwich Albion have signed England striker Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for a fee of about £12m.

The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries in his five years at Saints, scoring 32 goals in 126 appearances.

His most prolific season was 2013-14, when he scored 15 Premier League goals and made his only England appearance.

“After one or two ‘near misses’ I’m absolutely buzzing to be here,” Rodriguez - a long-term target for boss Tony Pulis - told the club website.

"The most important thing for any player is to be wanted - and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear.

“I’m genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion’s stature. The team is full of top players and it’s pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads.”

Rodriguez missed the entire 2014-15 season after a serious knee injury and then had ankle surgery in November 2015, making only 16 appearances that season, before netting six goals in 34 appearances last season.

The Burnley-born forward, who left his home town club for Southampton in a reported £7m move in 2012, made his international debut against Chile in November 2013 and was in contention for England’s World Cup squad before his knee injury in April 2014.

Premier League transfer records: Club-by-club guide

Show/hide article…

As the new TV rights deal floods the Premier League with yet more cash, the transfer fees paid out by clubs are rising astronomically.

The world record has increased by £57million since the turn of the century and it has become routine for teams to routinely break their own records in the pursuit of a squad capable of competing at the elite level.

Here, Sportsmail breaks down how the Premier League’s 20 current clubs have seen their own transfer records increase in recent years.

The Argentinian winger never settled in Manchester and after a single season moved on to PSG.

Having let him go for nothing, United had to pay a world record fee to re-sign their academy graduate.

The striker has been among the most prolific in the division since arriving at the Etihad.

Sterling had asked to leave Anfield and Liverpool had previously rejected two City bids for his services.

The 24-year-old agreed a six-year deal and his transfer fee, at the time, was the second highest ever paid by a British club.

The striker scored 50 goals in only 84 games with the Magpies.

A seismic moment in British transfer history saw the England captain join his boyhood club for a world record fee.

The 25-year-old was keen to rejoin Liverpool but the Reds refused to meet the asking price.

The fee for the Kenya international was the the highest ever received by a Scottish club for a player.

The striker was a total flop at St Mary’s, scoring just three times in two seasons on the south coast.

The Moroccan only started 12 Premier League games in his first season after signing a five-year deal.

DONE DEAL! West Bromwich Albion complete £12million signing of Jay Rodriguez from Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Brom have completed the signing of Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for a reported £12million fee.

The Baggies have long been liked with the 27-year-old England international and chose a novel way to announce his arrival.

Responding to a tweet from a fan asking if they had signed anyone yet, Albion replied with a four-second clip of Rodriguez saying “yes we have”.

Saints say they have received an undisclosed fee for Rodriguez who made 126 appearances for them after joining from Burnley in 2012.

His time on the south coast was interrupted heavily by a serious knee injury which ruled him out for 11 months - a time which included the 2014 World Cup.

He had made his England debut in a friendly against Chile in November 2013.

Albion say Tony Pulis has tried on multiple occasions to land Rodriguez and the forward told the club’s official website: "After one or two ‘near misses’ I’m absolutely buzzing to be here.

"The most important thing for any player is to be wanted – and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That’s fantastic for any footballer to hear.

“I’m genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion’s stature. The team is full of top players and it’s pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads.”

Chairman John Williams commented: "I am delighted to welcome Jay to The Hawthorns. We tried to sign him during the previous two windows and it’s third time ‘deal done.’ Our persistence has been rewarded.

“Jay is a proven Premier League striker, an England international and a player who will give Tony more attacking options.”
